October is here! More seasonal to milder temperatures are taking over. We are prepping the golf course for the fall as the leaves will begin to slowly fall as we approach Halloween. I have sprayed the greens surrounds twice with a pre-emergent to control the Annual Blue Grass stand; the rest of the course will be treated this month with a herbicide to prevent fall/winter weeds on the dormant turf. We have begun to remove broken cart path and will soon move to curbs once again. This will allow for a smoother ride in the new golf carts. The crew has been taking down pines that are dead and we are doing this in house and will grind the stumps once the tree removal is complete. The rough growth is slowing down, and we are seeing it slower to recover from mowing due to a little less light during the day. Now is the time to pay attention to where carts are being driven and traffic stakes as this will prevent injury going into the fall and winter. The green s height will be taken higher after Member-Member, this will help us have a buffer from cooler temps during the winter and low light months. I will incrementally raise heights on fairways and tees during this month as well. Over seeding of rye grass will be done in October to the driving range tee as well as the par 3 tees. It will take about 7-10 days for a good germination. October is a busy time agronomically for the course; it s all for preparation for the winter and spring green up. This is my last news letter to the membership of Doublegate as I am moving on to another club in Alabama. The last five years have been great as I look back on my time spent working here and appreciate all the relationships that have been forged. There are many wonderful people that I had the benefit of working with every day and I thank the club and management for allowing me to grow. Thanks to the golfing membership for your continued patronage of your course. 6 Junior Team Tennis - Time is TBD Find some friends and form a tennis team. Your team can register and compete against all others in the South Georgia area. The top teams in each division receive a bid to compete in the state championships every Summer. Last year Doublegate had 5 teams and they all won their local area bid for the state championships. Don t miss this opportunity for your kids to compete and play. Dear Doublegate Members, Fall is in full bloom and with it our tennis season is as well. Ladies Quads is rolling with over 9 courts & 36 ladies participating every Thursday morning. This is a new record number of ladies participating and great to see as the ladies take to the courts every Thursday morning. The ladies league includes occasional lunches and a total games race for 1st through 3rd position. Prizes, lunches, great tennis, and a social morning out makes for a great season of tennis for our ladies. The Family Championships is coming soon. By the time you read this it will be a few weeks away. Don t miss one of the most popular events of the season. Parents join forces with their children to take on other families. Friendly competitive rivalries among families coupled with a fun filled day of tennis, food, and friends makes for an unforgettable day of memories. Fall team tennis will also be starting up soon. Fall is the time for our local season when Doublegate joins other neighboring cities in South Georgia. Our Doublegate teams take on Bainbridge, Valdosta, Thomasville, and Camilla for an opportunity to play at the state championships in July The state championships is the same event our kids had a blast playing just this past July. The tennis courts will be looking their best with Fall season maintenance. The courts will get new clay and calcium. We also will be doing some lighting repairs before the time change. LED lights are being considered as an option to phase out the older lights that are causing problems. Bronze, Silver, & are offered throughout the year for our juniors. Learn the tennis basics in or continue to advance your game in Silver at the intermediate level. Take the next step to the pro level in our. Learn the sport of a lifetime and get started playing in our weekly practices. Thursday Night Cardio Tennis Every Thursday from 7:30pm-8:30pm This class is year-round now. We only cancel for bad weather and holidays. It is open to all adult and all levels. Get a great cardio workout without realizing you are even exercising. Join us for 1 hour of tennis games, drills, running, music, and fun. Tuesday Morning Every Tuesday from 9:30am-11:00am Tuesday mornings the ladies join us for a morning of instruction, point play, and tennis doubles strategy. Brush up on your game in this class to play well in Quads and weekend league play. Fall Quads Thursday Mornings Late August - December Fall Quads is becoming very popular among the ladies. Every Thursday morning at 9:30am the ladies come out for tennis. Over 30 ladies play doubles each Thursday morning throughout the Fall. All levels from beginner to advanced hit the courts for this morning of tennis. Join us this Fall and enjoy playing. Men s Sunday Doubles Every Sunday at 1:30pm Join the men and our staff professional every Sunday for a pleasant afternoon of doubles with our members. The men take turns playing sets or a round robin type format each afternoon. Sometimes our staff professionals join in to make a foursome. The Family Championships October 20th & 21st The family championship is always a popular weekend for tennis. Grab a family member or cousin and compete in our weekend tournament. Parents play with children on Saturday. The husband and wife event is on Sunday. Join our Doublegate families and compete against the other families in this friendly tennis format.
