2 News from the Gate Currently, your club leadership is undergoing the process of developing a Strategic Plan. As discussed last month, that process includes focusing on our mission, staying true to our core values and establishing an action plan. The Strategic Plan is a results oriented plan with measurable goals and objectives that are designed to achieve the clubs vision. This is clearly defined by our Mission Statement as: To be the premier family country club of Southwest Georgia. The five main areas of focus in the Strategic Plan will be Membership, Financial, Facilities, Utilization & Experience. For each area of focus, goals and objectives will be determined with tactics that are attainable, measureable, timely and assigned for accountability. An example would be in the area of Membership if the goal is a net increase of 5% in total memberships. The tactics associated with increasing membership could be to review membership categories, develop and implement a marketing plan and improve integration of new members into the club. The Membership Committee along with club staff would be charged with setting the plan in action and reporting progress monthly to the Board as to the tactics implemented and results achieved. Although the development of the entire plan takes some time, we are immediately implementing some tactics focused on the member Experience. Specifically, improving service to the members, their families and guests in the dining rooms. Raising our service standards to exceed member expectations is one of our top priorities. While each area of focus will have multiple goals and objectives, they are necessarily bound to one another. For instance, improved services leads to increased member usage increasing member retention as well as revenue which assists in meeting financial goals and provides funding for facility improvements. Achieving the goals set forth in the Strategic Plan will enable the club to laser focus efforts and resources on attaining the clubs vision and throughout the process provide the membership with the DCC Experience one in which the expectations of you the member are consistently exceeded at your club. See you at your club! TENNIS QUIZ OF THE MONTH Who's point is it? Coach Joseph was playing Coach David and Joseph hit a dropshot over the net. The dropshot had enough backspin causing the ball to bounce back over the net on Joseph's side. Joseph was not able to reach the ball before it bounced twice. No googling this one!! One guess each being that it is a guess. Good Luck!! A prize in the tennis pro shop awaits the first correct answer. FSU FSU is working with Doublegate again this Summer. They are inviting our top juniors to play for a week of high performance tennis. We will join them the week of July 12th - 16th. The camp is for elite juniors who are tournament players. This camp was one of the highlights for our players last summer. Players stay for 5 days on campus, play over 6 hours of tennis each day, and are treated to a fun evening of activities every night. DOUBLEGATE GOLF ETIQUETTE The rounds of golf are picking up due to fine spring weather. The pace of play by everyone is very important. The main problem that occurs is that some groups play faster than other groups. This creates the problem of waiting on the group in front. This only becomes a problem if the lead group has an open hole in front of them. Etiquette dictates that the lead group is obligated to step aside and allow the waiting group to play through. It does not matter if the lead group is a foursome and the waiting group is a fivesome, a threesome or any size. They are playing faster because they are waiting. This also pertains to large groups. If the last group has a hole open and a group is waiting, they are still obligated to show golf course etiquette and allow the waiting group to play through. No single group can control the course and slow play down. P. 6

8 News from the Turf Dear Doublegate Members, May is upon us. The crew and I are working diligently to define the course. We are looking at the details and fine tuning preparations for Member-Guest at the end of the month. The month of April saw us complete some minor projects, such as leveling the front of the tee box at the driving range. We also took the time to fill in the bunker on number three behind the green. Tifway 419 Bermuda sod was added to the bunker that was filled in. The greens are healthy and we are working on incrementally speeding them up towards Member- Guest. We have solid tined them twice and added sand, when they need it. Vertical mowing is a must to reduce grain. We vertical mow at least twice a month, more often as the growing degree days increases. This is followed by sanding dragging watering and then mowing of the greens. Collar height has been taken down this year and will remain low. This gives us a smooth transition from green to intermediate height. Fairways are coming along at a good pace. Still I would like to see a denser canopy. This will be achieved by more fertilizer, vertical mowing and aerification. This process will take place after Member Guest at the end of the month. We plan to aerifiy the greens the Tuesday following the Member-Guest. Mother Nature permitting we will be back to normal on the greens around Father s day. The temperatures have transitioned nicely into late spring early summer. We will see a lot more daylight. But keep in mind that the old 419 Bermuda rough and fairways really do not grow that vigorously until July. That being said, please sand your divots and scatter your cart traffic. We will continue to use traffic stakes to direct the flow around the course. Our tournament schedule is full. We are very busy trying to whip the course into shape and set up for tournaments and member play on a daily basis. We will be working a few more hours than usual so please excuse the noise when we have to finish work. Finding the time to get these things done and not disturb play has become a challenge. The pool will open this month. We have added some tropical flowers around the pool and will continue to landscape the area to provide the comfort the membership deserves. There continues to be some vandalism around the course. We have taken measures to find out who is doing this. Please be vigilant as homeowners. If you see something, please report it to the club as soon as possible. As always thank you for your support. I know we will see you around the course. Best Regards, Matthew Ayer, Golf Course Superintendent S een Around the Club... The McMillan Family all dressed up for Easter Brunch.
