Join the Hole In One Club We currently have 176 members in the Hole In One club. When a member makes a Hole In One they receive $5 from each person in the club. That money is divided, half going towards your monthly bill, and half towards Golf Shop Credit. Stop by the golf shop today to register. Doublegate Golf Academy The Doublegate Golf Academy will be hosting its Inaugural Goble Goble Junior Golf Clinic. The age range will be from 6-12 years old, we will get together from 9:30-11am Tuesday, November 21st and Wednesday, November 22nd. This will be a fun camp for beginners to learn the game of golf. The Doublegate Golf Academy will also host a Thanksgiving Advanced Golf Seminar. This Seminar is designed for our more advanced Juniors to be a part of. We will be talking about the mental aspect, how to effectively practice, advanced drills for teaching, and how to prepare when playing in competition. The age range will be years old and will take place Tuesday, November 21st, from 2-4pm. It s almost Thanksgiving time of the year! That reinstates to me how this year has seemed to fly by; the holidays are just around the corner. I love to feel the crisp air in the mornings. This means on the course that the grass will slow it s growth and sun light plays a big factor in this as well as the days are becoming much shorter. We have been really busy around the course with the tournament schedule. Lots of dead trees coming down in the out of play areas; we plan to use a lift to limb up the pines and hard woods around the course for more view and playability. The 419 Bermuda has been sprayed with a pre-emergent to reduce the amount of winter weeds. We primarily fight poa annua; it s a pervasive weed which produces seeds at really low heights of cut. Luckily it is relatively easy to control with the right herbicides. We have gently raised the heights of the fairways and tees to.500 and the rough has been brought to 1.5. This will ensure that we have some plant material going into the low light months. It acts as a blanket for the crown of the plant so when we get frost, it will not reach the crown of the plant We have constructed a nice flower bed around the new clock at the putting green. The plant material will be switched often for an updated seasonal look. On the par threes, driving range tee and targets we have put down rye seed to help over winter the traffic on those tees. Later this month we will move into removing broken curbing around the course again. This time of year, allows us to get to things that have been pushed further down the list due to the hustle of the growing season and tournaments. I hope everyone has a Great Thanksgiving and is ready for the upcoming holidays. 6 News from the Courts Dear Doublegate Members, Doublegate tennis has been busy the past few months. Late September we finished the month with our annual USTA Junior Tournament. Over 85 juniors participated in a full weekend of tennis at the courts. Spectators and players also enjoyed a fantastic lunch prepared by Doublegate during the matches. We had a great showing with our juniors placing in many of the different divisions. The highlight of the weekend was Mary Margeson winning her very first USTA Tournament in the Girls 10 & under division. She beat Bella Shaw from Valdosta 5-4, 3-5, & 10-8 in the final tie breaker for the championships. Congratulations to Mary on her first ever USTA Tournament win!! Other highlights from this past October included a trip down to FSU with our Silver & Gold Academies. 22 players from Doublegate headed down to FSU one Saturday to take on the FSU Academy. The players were also able to hang out with the men s tennis team. They were practicing at the courts while our juniors were playing. FSU players and coaches were also gracious enough to spend time with our kids answering questions and playing a little. The next few months should remain busy with ladies Quads going strong and junior league tennis beginning. The junior team tennis season has started early this year and looks to be well attended with other nearby cities forming teams. The tennis facility will be getting a few repairs in the next few weeks. Our irrigation pump for the clay courts is leaking and in need of repair. A few lights are also out and will need attention very soon with the time change. We also have nets starting to come undone. They will probably be replaced before you read this Gatepost. All the best, David Buerkle Director of Tennis (1) Charles Peeler in action at the Doublegate USTA Tournament (2) FSU & Doublegate Academy with FSU Men s Team Players (3) Mary Margeson (left) & Bella Shaw (right) with 1st & 2nd Championship Trophies (4) Parents & Spectators enjoy lunch & tennis under the oak trees during the USTA Tournament 6 - The GATEPOST Upcoming Tennis Events Fall Academies: Academies run from August through late December.
