2 News from the Club Dear Doublegate Members: I would like to wish the entire membership and their families a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season. On behalf of the entire staff I would like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to all the members who contributed to the Holiday Employee Fund. The staff members behind the scenes who you do not come into contact with very often appreciate your generosity this time of year and send thank you s to all. I look forward to 2018 and will continue to look for ways to improve our wonderful Club each and every day of the year. I look forward to working with our Membership, Board of Directors and Staff to make Doublegate Country Club the nicest and friendliest Club in Southwest Georgia. We will continue to offer complimentary gift wrapping. Bailey Farris was nominated by his coworkers as October Employee of the Month. Bailey does a great job taking care of service in the Men s Locker Room. Bailey is very versatile as you may also see him at the Club Bartending, assisting with the Friday Night Drawing or lending a helping hand to the service staff. Bailey has been employed at Doublegate for over two years and gets along well with the membership and his teammates. Congratulations and Thank You! CONGRATULATIONS! Congratulations go out to the team from Doublegate for winning the 2017 Challenge Cup at Stonebridge. We pulled out a 3 shot victory after the final team of Tom Rief and Mathis Acree posted a final round score of 64. The team members were; Mike Cooper, Bubba Burt, Spencer Davis, Michael Monahan, Bradley Abell, Han Kim, Peter Lee, Tom Rief, Mathis Acree, Terry Durham, Tate Parker, and Captain Rex Ross. The Challenge Cup Trophy is on display in the clubhouse and will be until next year s Cup match, which will be held at Doublegate. Refer a new member and you will receive one month free dues! 4 News from the Fairways Shot of the Month November 7th John Holman makes a Hole In One on #11 while shooting his age November 8th Nancy Abraham made and eagle on #15, followed it up with a birdie on #16 Hole In Ones If you would like to join the hole in one club please contact the Doublegate Golf Staff. We would like to congratulate the following for making a hole in one. Larry Foreman and Ben Benford The Holiday season is upon us. The golf shop is offering product from some of the best manufacturers in golf! We will be having sales all month long. So come by the golf shop and use your Golf Shop Credit to purchase your family gifts for the Holiday s. Starting in January 2018, we will be introducing a few new programs to our Junior Golf Academy. We will be hosting our first SNAG Golf Saturday clinic January 13th at 3pm. SNAG Golf is the best way to get kids interested in the game. We hope to reach many of our youngest members with this program and we will continue it throughout the year! The perfect age to start SNAG is between 5 and 9 years old. Please call the golf shop or Rex at rross@doublegatecc.com to register. I can t believe the end of the year has arrived so fast. It s December already. We have been a cool, not cold cycle lately. Currently the grass is in limbo responding to the ground temperature. Lower light levels will not produce much top growth. We are managing the sub soil now with an eye toward transition in the spring. We have removed a lot of dead trees from this year; mostly pine trees. We have ground several stumps, with more to come around January. We are making the transition as a crew to daily leaf blowing of the greens and the rest of the course as well. We have begun to edge irrigation heads and cart paths. The greens have responded to the ambient temperature more rapidly because they are sand based and cool down much quicker. The growth rate will reflect what we see weather wise. We have put out some calcium, potassium nitrate, and low rates of nitrogen. The greens plants do not need to be force fed much nitrogen now. In fact, we have raised the greens heights to.140 with regular light topdressing and some rolling we will maintain the speed of the greens. They have a tendency to get very fast the longer into winter. The plant lays down horizontal reducing drag on the ball. This is due to low sunlight during winter until February- March. I am pleased with how the greens preformed this year. By the way we are approaching 12 years old on these champion greens surfaces. These are some of the oldest in the state. Our soil profile root zone and gravel drainage layer is 26 years old. In my opinion, we are doing a great job with the mature greens and the antiquated subsoil. However, in the not so distant future we as a club should be thinking about updating our greens. The crew and I are looking forward to our second Equipment package with John Deere. We will be receiving new cutting units as well as utility vehicles. This is scheduled for January 1st We had a dedication of the clock for Ed Everett. I was touched to hear such nice things said by his closest friends. I know personally I would not be down here if it was not for him. I am very thankful for the opportunity Ed and Doublegate Country Club has given me and my family. The landscape around the clock was done by Derrick Harris and Albert Jones. I want to thank those men for their hard work. Thank you to the Golf Committee and the Board for helping make our 2017 a successful year. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!!!!! 6 News from the Courts Dear Doublegate Members, Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from Doublegate!! December is always one of the best months of the year with Christmas, family time, & friends. Children also are out of school and family from out of town sometimes comes for a visit. Mixing in a little tennis is also a great way to finish the year off. Junior Team Tennis is in full swing now and will be coming to an end by the time you read this. Over 150 children are participating in the South Georgia area with about 40 from Doublegate. Our teams had a great showing on the first match day held in Camilla GA. Each team played doubleheader matches and won all their games. Doublegate will be hosting the league this December. Our kids are participating for a state championship bid that will be played in July Quads is coming to an end with the holidays a few weeks away. We will start the Spring league in February. We had a record breaking year for ladies Quads and many new faces join us. We are excited and looking forward to a great Spring league. We have a few projects that are still in the process of being updated at the courts. We still have a few lights out that need to be repaired. Our clay storage shed should be completed sometime in January or February. The irrigation pump gave us some trouble this past month but is now fixed and running smoothly. We also have a long term goal of overhauling the hard courts. They are in need to keep our club beautiful and programs thriving. Bronze, Silver, & Gold Academy are offered throughout the year for our juniors. Learn the tennis basics in Bronze Academy or continue to advance your game in Silver at the intermediate level. Take the next step to the pro level in our Gold Academy. Learn the sport of a lifetime and get started playing in our weekly practices. Thursday Night Cardio Tennis Every Thursday at 7:30pm-8:30pm This class is year round now. We only cancel for bad weather and holidays. It is open to all adult and all levels. Get a great cardio workout without realizing you are even exercising. Join us for 1 hour of tennis games, drills, running, music, and fun. Tuesday Morning Ladies Clinic: Every Tuesday from 9:30am-11:00am Tuesday mornings the ladies join us for a morning of instruction, point play, and tennis doubles strategy. Brush up on your game in this class in order to play well in Quads and weekend league play. Fall Quads Thursday Mornings Late August-December Fall Quads is becoming very popular among the ladies. Every Thursday morning at 9:30am the ladies come out for tennis. Over 30 ladies play doubles each Thursday morning throughout the Fall. All levels from beginner to advanced hit the courts for this morning of tennis. Join us this Fall and enjoy playing. Men s Sunday Doubles: Every Sunday at 1:30pm Join the men and our staff professional every Sunday for a pleasant afternoon of doubles with our members. The men take turns playing sets or a round robin type format each afternoon. Sometimes our staff professionals join in to make a foursome. Junior Team Tennis: November - March (Season Opens November 4th) Captain a team or join a team and play against other local junior teams in the South Georgia area. The top teams also earn a chance to represent Doublegate at the State Championship held in July. The program is very similar to adult league tennis for juniors. It is a great opportunity to practice for high school tennis seasons. All levels and ages may participate for 10 & under to 18 & under.
