2 News from the Gate Gratefulness. Have you recently taken the time to reflect and count the blessings in your life? Studies have revealed that the act of gratefulness is a keystone to one s happiness. Being grateful also has been shown to increase social conscious and generosity toward others, leads to greater optimism, more energy and feeling more connected to others. Further, those who are grateful tend to make greater progress in achieving personal goals, have fewer physical complaints and exercise regularly. Like a lot of people, I begin each year with resolutions to change and improve my life that have usually disappeared and dissolved by the end of February. It s about that time that as opposed to feeling defeated for not following through with my plan that I make a list of the things for which I am grateful. I can share with you that this year, it was a much more emotional mental exercise for me to accomplish. Throughout my personal journey the past few months, I have reminded myself daily of the blessings in my life. Being grateful for the experiences and opportunities that I have enjoyed and the love shared with family and friends has enabled me to move forward and start a new chapter. Even sharing my experience with others has deepened my appreciation for life s blessings and made me more thankful. My journey is also bridged by two clubs and communities on opposite coasts who have surrounded my family with love and support. I am sincerely appreciative to the membership, staff and Board at DCC who have reached out in welcoming my daughters and I back home and we look forward to being a part of the family at your club. We are grateful for the opportunity and truly count it as a blessing in our lives. Be grateful for your journey because it is yours alone. FAMILY NIGHT EVENTS WEDNESDAY EVENINGS 6:00-7:00 P.M. His great round was played on January 21st. On Saturday, February 21st, the wind was howling down #7. Fran Clinkscales reached within 10 yards of the hole in two. Her chip shot found the bottom of the cup for a rare eagle 3 for a lady. Her group consisted of Anne Vazsonyi, Helen Kirbo and Nancy Abraham. George McDonnell used a spinning 8 iron to back his tee shot on hole 6 back into the cup for a holein-one. Playing with him was John Kirbo and Jesse Riley. February 22nd will bring fond memories. 6 News from the Turf Dear Doublegate Members, It is March and things are still a bit on the cool side. Before you know it we will see all the buds on the trees and shrubs ready to explode. When this occurs you can count on the yellow pollen from the pine trees. This is a yearly battle with the litter it makes for the course, sidewalks and your cars. I have put down a pre-emerge herbicide for the summer time weeds. March is a time where we will see a rise in the soil temperatures. This will trigger the grass to slowly start its greening up process. Photosynthesis begins to ramp up production inside the leaves. Breaking dormancy the plants appetite for food (fertilizer) is ferocious. The grass needs a big meal after waking up from hibernation, (just like a bear). We will be putting down some granular fertilizer to feed the soil. The roots of the plant can take up the nutrients easier, during this time. It is crucial that we not stress the plants out during this point. The plants have enough issues to deal with in nature. The possibility of a hard frost or not adequate sunlight can be detrimental. These issues can be compounded by man-made traffic or mowing. We will begin gradually lowering the heights on the greens, tees and fairways. We have started a few projects around the course like the turnaround circle at number seven tees. The crew will also be replacing the timbers around the drinking fountains on the course with stone. Some leveling on the practice range tee will occur after the Darton Tournament in early March. March is the month where we officially kick off the tournament schedule. We have a number of outings and matches throughout the month. I anticipate great conditions on the greens and helping the rest of the course emerge into spring with a bang. The crew has been doing some painting of the clubs patio furniture and the benches at the front entrance. I know that it is not on your mind now but we will be doing some work in the coming weeks at the pool area and grounds to get ready for another great season. Please tell your children to be careful and follow the rules when riding personal golf carts on the course. We look forward to dusting off the mowers and getting some spring cleaning done! See you on the course. Best Regards, Matthew Ayer, Golf Course Superintendent S een Around the Club Deerfield Charity Auction P. 6
