4 Message from the chairman Hello and on behalf of the committee I would like to wish you a warm welcome to the 2016 Berriew Horticultural & Agricultural Show. Even though it seems a long way away at the time of writing, we will soon find the August Bank Holiday is with us and the showfield will, once again, become a hive of activity. Although the day itself is hectic, it is only because of the planning that goes into organising by the small, dedicated committee over the weeks and months prior to the day that the show is able to run at all and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all. In addition there are many people who take the time to help out with setting up prior to the show, running sections and areas of the show on the day and also clearing up and restoring the field to its pre-show condition, without whom we would also not have a show We are always looking for people to come along and help out. Even if you haven't got the time to be a full committee member, we do need volunteers to help out on the showfield over the weekend. A group of people who give us help year in, year out, are Berriew Young Farmers Club, without whose help we would not be able to set up and clear up the showfield. It is with great pleasure that the committee have decided that this year's Sunday Luncheon donation will be towards this local group. The Luncheon is held the day after the Show, in the marquee and if you are interested in coming along, details on how to obtain tickets are further on in this schedule. In the week leading up to the show, there is usually a mixture of apprehension and anticipation. From hoping the weather will be kind to us, trying to make sure that there is nothing I've forgotten to do (there usually is!) all the way through to clearing everything off the field at the end of the weekend. It is a very busy weekend, but I always try to take a moment during the day to appreciate what the show means, and continues to mean to Berriew and the local area. I wish all of you the very best at the 2016 Show. Wayne Jones, Chairman PLEASE NOTE THAT THE EXHIBITS MUST BE STAGED BEFORE 11AM AS THIS IS THE TIME WHEN THE TENT CLOSES FOR JUDGING. Enter 20 ENTRIES in the tent... every additional entry is FREE! Remember!! NO ENTRIES = NO SHOW NO ATTENDANCE = NO SHOW A Trophy presented by Steven Jones will be awarded to the competitor who has the highest number of exhibits shown in the tent 2

Lemon Drizzle Tray bake (class 421) 225g (8 oz) butter, softened 4 eggs 225g (8 oz) caster sugar 4 tablespoons milk 275g (10 oz) self-raising flour Finely grated rind of 2 lemons 2 teaspoons baking powder CRUNCHY TOPPING 175g (6 oz) granulated sugar Juice of 2 lemons A tray bake or roasting tin 30 x 23 x 4 cm (12 x 9 x 1 ½ inches Method Pre-heat the oven to 160 C (325 F) Gas Mark 3. Cut a rectangle of non-stick baking parchment to fit the base and sides of a tray bake tin or roasting tin, 30 x 23 x 4 cm (12 x 9 x 1 ½ inches). Grease the tin and then line with the paper, pushing it neatly into the corners of the tin. Measure all the ingredients for the traybake into a large bowl and beat well for about 2 minutes until well blended. Turn the mixture into the prepared tin, Level the top gently with the back of the spatula. Bake in the middle of the pre-heated oven for about minutes or until the traybake springs back when pressed lightly with a finger in the centre and is beginning to shrink away from the sides of the tin. Allow the traybake to cool in the tin for a few minutes then lift the traybake out of the tin still in the lining paper. Carefully remove the paper and put the traybake onto a wire rack placed over a tray (to catch drips of the topping). To make the crunchy topping, mix the lemon juice and granulated sugar in a small bowl to give a runny consistency. Spoon this mixture evenly over the traybake whilst it is still just warm. Cut into about squares when cold. 22

Melt the butter in a saucepan, stir in the caster sugar and cook for about 1 minute. Remove from the heat, leave to cool a little then gradually stir in the egg, ground rice or semolina, and almond extract. Spread the jam evenly over the bottom of the pastry shell and pour the almond mixture on top. Sprinkle with flaked almonds. Irish Soda bread (class 428) 170g (6 oz) self raising wholemeal flour 170g (6oz) plain flour ½ tsp salt ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 290 ml ( ½ pint ) buttermilk Method Pre heat the oven to 200 C (Gas 6). Tip the flours, salt and bicarbonate of soda into a large mixing bowl and stir. Make a well in the centre and pour in the buttermilk, mixing quickly with a large fork to form a soft dough (depending upon the absorbency of the flour, you may need to add a little milk if the dough seems to stiff but it should not be too wet or sticky). Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Form into a round shape and flatten the dough slightly before placing on a lightly floured baking sheet. Cut a cross on the top and bake for about 30 minutes or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack. 23

26 Millionaire's shortbread (class 429) For the shortbread 225g/8oz plain flour 175g/6oz unsalted butter cut into cubes 75g/2¾oz caster sugar For the topping 150g/5oz butter 1 x 379g can condensed milk 100g/3½oz golden syrup 350g/12oz chocolate, mixture of dark and milk, chopped into small pieces Method Preheat the oven to 150 C/300 F/Gas 2. Line a 23cm/9in square cake tin with baking parchment. Combine the flour and butter cubes in a food processor and pulse until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. (Alternatively, you can rub the butter in by hand.) Add in the caster sugar and pulse again until combined. Tip the mixture into the lined cake tin and spread it out evenly with the back of a spoon. Then press the shortbread down firmly with your knuckles so that it is tightly packed in the tin. Bake the shortbread for 30 minutes or until very light golden brown. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile, for the topping, heat the butter, condensed milk and golden syrup in a saucepan, stirring occasionally until the butter is melted and the mixture is smooth. Increase the heat and bring the mixture to the boil, stirring frequently. The caramel will thicken and turn golden-brown. Set aside to cool slightly, then pour over the cooled shortbread. Allow to cool completely. Melt the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water (ensure that the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water), stirring occasionally. Pour the melted chocolate over the caramel and set aside until the chocolate has cooled completely. When set, cut into squares. Breadsticks (class 430) 250g/10oz White seed and grain bread flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon of sugar 1 teaspoon of fast acting yeast 2 tablespoons of olive oil Sesame or Poppy seeds for rolling the breadsticks in Sea salt to sprinkle on the top Method Preheat the oven to 200 C/400 F/Gas 6. Put the flour, salt and sugar in a bowl and stir in the yeast. Mix the oil with 150ml of luke warm water and add to the flour. Mix well until it forms a dough. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes or 5 minutes in a mixer with a dough hook. Sprinkle the work surface with the seeds of your choice and roll out the dough as thinly as possible into a rectangle. Cut the dough into 1cm wide strips. Roll each one into a pencil shape and place on an oiled baking tray spaced a little apart. Cover with cling film and leave to prove in a warm place for about minutes or until risen a little. Sprinkle with sea salt and bake for 10 minutes or unti golden brown and crisp. 24
