1 NEW MEXICO COUNCIL OF CAR CLUBS FOUNDED IN 1977 TO REPRESENT THE AUTO HOBBY IN NEW MEXICO NEWSLETTER FOR FEBRUARY, 2014 NEXT MEETING TO BE AT OLD CAR GARAGE WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2014, 7:30pm MEETING AGENDA: Registering NMCCC Name & Logo; Plans for 2014 Events; Budget for 2014; Web Site * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * ATTENTION PLEASE If your club or organization sponsors a cruise, race event, or other activity that occurs on a regular basis, please check the listings at the end of this newsletter and make sure the listing is current and correct. Several cruises have been cancelled, and others have been added, so please check the list before you go. Any comments, changes, etc. should be directed to joyce@nmcarcouncil.net. Thank you. ********* The Car Council is a current member of SEMA. Any club may join free. It keeps members updated about proposed legislation that affects the car hobby nationwide. It is recommended that your club sign up; do it at It's free and should be helpful. The editor will publish pertinent information received. See paragraph below: The SEMA Action Network (SAN) announced that the next Collector Car Appreciation Day will be celebrated on July 11, The date will mark the fifth consecutive commemoration in what is now an annual event to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. New Mexico is one of a few places that join SEMA in promoting this. In 2013, New Mexico, New York, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Madera County, California and Washington Parish, Louisiana joined the U.S. Senate in proclaiming Collector Car Appreciation Day. We are in the forefront. On the legislative front: The legislature in NM is threatening a raise in gasoline taxes to generate more income for highway projects. (Editor's question: Why not license bicycles for a fee to help pay for paving and striping bicycle paths and lanes on the streets?) Ethanol-Free Gas: There are 23 stations in New Mexico that sell ethanol-free gas, and over 7,000 stations nation-wide. To find a list, go to and click on the desired state. This is a good resource for older cars that don't like the gasohol too well. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * New Mexico Council of Car Clubs Minutes: January 22, 2013 Meeting The first meeting for 2014 got underway promptly at its scheduled hour of 7:30. President Dennis called us to order, and quickly dispatched the various agenda items. Seeing that all of the club reps had recieved their newsletters, our new Money man Mr. Louie gave us a breakdown of club expenditures, as well as an outline on some new procedural items that he will institute to break out various events, and how each event will have its own stand-alone expense. Nothing new to report on our website and domain name. JD will be working on the Collector Car Appreciation resolution and report back to the Council. He is also working on registering and copyrighting the NMCCC name and logo. With the legislature in session, things are a bit busy in Santa Fe right now. Chris Padilla of the GTO Club reported that his club was celebrating "50 Years of GTO", and they would therefore host the All Clubs Picnic in honor of the occasion. Good show Chris! We know he's an excellent hot dog and bean chef from past feasts. Dennis then called on Joyce to recap the Swap Meet report for 2013, and give us an overview of what we can expect for It appears after expenses that the Swap Meet of 2013 cleared roughly $5,500 in profits to the Council. This is before the clubs voted to send the Village of Los Lunas $1,250, as has been our custom. Another shout out to Joyce and all of the crew that work this meet year after year to make it a success. I should also at this point mention that Joyce and members of her committee willl be meeting with the Village reps to line out the 2014 meet. Thankfully it appears that we will not be making sweeping changes to the format. Alas, the wheel is still round, no need to tinker. After the 2014 Swap Meet report, we also discussed the 2014 Council Car Show set for May 18 th of this year. This year's theme will be "75 Years of Mercury". We will also give special mention to the 50 years of

2 Mustang and GTO. If you have a special Mercury or vintage Mustang or GTO, please see Joyce, as the car show committee will be coordinating the front rows. She already poo pooed my 1983 Mercury Colony Park, so it looks like we want to keep the front of the Museum filled with vintage rides. Ron Rymarz gave us a report of the recent trailer purchase; sounds like we got a bargain. Thanks Ron for your skill. Did they know you might have been packing heat? The board also purchased 2700 forever stamps, a smart move in light of the Janurary 26 th increase of three cents, thus saving the Council right at $100 for swap meet postage. A $100 here a $100 there, you got real money. The Officers and Directors will determine a date and place to have a Budget Committee meeting to estimate expenses for It was decided that a Bylaws Committee meeting be postponed indefinitely, as there is no pressing need for any changes at the moment. Please review your newsletters for upcoming events,as well as news on our upcoming Car Show, All Clubs Picinic and of course our fall Swap Meet. Seeing no new business before the Council, President Dennis, accepted a motion, moved and seconded, and gaveled us out at 8:20, thus ending a meeting that I would have thought might have contained a little more color. Sometimes boring is good. See ya in Feburary and safe motoring. Your Sec. Bill Lemen CAR SHOW NOTES The Albuquerque Museum staff is looking forward to the show again this year. The format should be about the same as last year, but hopefully without the broken water main. The Museum is checking with the City to see if any requirements have changed. The committee of Perry Key, Bill Lemen, Chuck & Pat Logan, Louie Paul, Lyle Schultz, Tom Willers, and the Clements have been working out details. The featured cars this year will be "75 Years of Mercury"; "50 Years of GTO" and "50 Years of Mustang" will be recognized. The committee will be looking for vintage examples of the above models for the featured row(s). Entry forms and posters are being created by Lyle Schultz and the Museum staff. Perry Key has designed the awards, and they are ordered. Mailing date for the entry forms still need to be determined. With the help of our volunteers, we should have a very good show. Joyce SWAP MEET NOTES Joyce, Jim & Will Clements, Louie Paul, and Dennis Seibert met with representatives from the Village of Los Lunas, Kent Saul, Chuck Rumschlag and Bud Hennessy. The Village is very happy to have us use Morris Field for the Swap Meet in September. They have been very appreciative of our donations and the business we bring to their community. The village will help us by providing local and out-of-state advertising, printing color posters, providing dumpsters and porta-potties, arranging for food vendors and paying some of the tent cost. They also provide manpower to help set up the field, and supervision during the meet. Park personnel will be on site all during the meet. John Hayne is designing and ordering the pins, and Lyle Schultz has started on advertising posters. Louie Paul is working on a map that will include the whole area, including the baseball fields. Louie is also investigating security companies, so that we can have good daytime and overnight security. The only glitch that might occur is that the State Highway Dept. is planning an eventual exit from I-25 to Morris Rd. If this is started at all by the time of the swap meet, it may require some rerouting of traffic to the field. We should know by the time we start sending out reservations, so that we can include instructions to our vendors. The Village also has sign-making equipment that can be used to create direction signs to our entrance/exit. It looks as if we are set for a good meet. You will be asked to volunteer to help with the chores later in the year. SPECIAL TOUR FOR ALL CLUBS At the back of this newsletter is a flyer for a driving tour in southern New Mexico on May 10. Louie Paul did some legwork and found several interesting places to visit. Possible activities include a car show in El Paso, a large outlet mall there, a visit to a huge nursery (Sierra Vista Growers in La Union), tour to Old Mesilla Plaza, and a visit to the War Eagles Air Museum (which has a P-38 and some cars). All clubs in NM are invited to participate, and it is up to individual groups to arrange their own arrival times and departures; participants may take part in whatever portions of the tour they choose. Driving time from Albuquerque is 3.5 to 4 hours. Louie will have discount tickets for the nursery and free admission tickets to the air museum at the meeting. You can contact him at louiepaul@earthlink.net with questions and to request tickets. It should be a great tour and a chance to get that car out of mothballs and on the road. 2
