1 ROYAL WELSH WINTER FAIR 26 th & 27 th NOVEMBER 2018 Auctioneer: Clive Roads Chris Jones SUPREME CHAMPION to 6,600 RESERVE SUPREME CHAMPION to 2,900 CATTLE SALE REPORT The annual trip from North Wales for T C Edwards & Sons, Corwen again proved to be fruitful when their Limousin cross heifer I Candy weighing in at 672kg took the magical Supreme Championship having won the class, Limousin section and battled it out against the Champion Steer to take the coveted top award. When she arrived in the sale ring a hotly contested trade ensued and was finally secured by the pre-sale heifer judge Mr Arwyn Morgan for his renowned shops trading as Morgans Butchers in Builth Wells and Brecon. The Reserve Supreme Champion, superbly shown by Lin Calcraft of Honiton, Devon, was a British Blue cross steer Derulo weighing 654kg. he also took every award in his stride and was eventually pipped at the post by the Limousin cross heifer. Bidding ws brisk for the steer and E & S Thomas, Cardigan eventually took the steer at a very creditable 2,900. Trade throughout the sale was buoyant for any cattle with real finish and fleshing. Although continental crosses dominated proceedings, native crosses were well followed and enjoyed a sound, genuine trade. Top prices in the relevant sections were as follows: Limousin Steers 141 E H Pennie & Sons 534kg 370p/kg ( 1,975) S O Brien, Co. 2 Native crosses were in demand from both retailers and wholesalers with Welsh Blacks taking pole position in that section. Owen Brothers, Conwy sold their first prize winner Hendre Eirian Erian 592kg at 325p/kg ( 1,924) to Rob Rattray, Cardigan. BABY BEEF and YFC CLASS of YOUNG CALVES One of the best Shows of Calves seen at the Winter Fair generated considerable interest from the start to finish with buyers from all corners of the U.K. The sale commenced with the Young Farmers Section where we saw a 100% clearance and a young Limousin heifer from RW & LA Jones, Lower Argoed take the honours and top the section at 3.00/kg and 1,200. However the top call of the day came soon after for the Overall Supreme Champion Lot 228 from Mr L Hughes of Fferam Gyd, Anglesey. This was a 6 month old Limousin cross heifer at 311kg which attracted interest from Ireland and Scotland and was eventually sold for 7,500 to an undisclosed buyer from Scotland. RW & LA Jones from Lower Argoed again had a wonderful result for a Limousin cross heifer which came first in Class 25.4 and made 4,250 ( 10.29/kg) and went to Ireland. However the surprise of the day came at the very end of the sale when a superb Charolais steer from E H Pennie & Co, Gwernyrychain, which was the Reserve Champion Steer, made 4,100 and went to Scotland.
