OLD MILLFIELDIAN PLAYER PROFILE EDWARD HORLER Name: Ed Horler Years a ended Millfield: 2008 Sponsor: Adidas Best memory of school hockey: Loved all of the indoor hockey! Especially in my final year progressing with the U18s to claim runners up of Na onals. Current Team: Loughborough Students and GB Senior Squad. Best memory of hockey since leaving Millfield: Would be one of two moments... Bea ng the Aussie's 5 1 in Malaysia or receiving my first indoor Senior cap for England. Most valuable lesson: Resilience, every day is a new day. Why do you play hockey: There are plenty of reasons. The biggest one would have to be compe ng and winning with my teammates. What are your aims for the future: I would love to represent England and Great Britain at any major tournament, but the ul mate goal is Tokyo Down me: I enjoying playing a few other sports. Golf and boxing in par cular. I also enjoying relaxing with friends and family. Inspira on: Jonny Wilkinson "You have 24 hour surveillance on you" What was it like ge ng your first cap/goal for England Seniors: I can t describe the actual feeling. You re proud but you re also focused on the task at hand. First goal was pre y special the adrenaline it gives you is something else.

MILLFIELD SPORTS AWARDS Above: 1XI Girls celebra ng their season by winning the Millfield Senior Girls Team of the Year. Over the 39 fixtures played this season, the 1XI girls won 31 mes and scored a sensa onal 123 goals! Conceding only 27, they finished the year with a goal difference of +96! Well done girls! Le : Elisha Evans with Director of Hockey and 1XI Girls Coach, Reggie Keates. Elisha was awarded the Senior Girls Performer of the Year at the Millfield Sports Awards. Elisha has had a phenomenal year with her hockey. Playing Premier League hockey with the Cli on Ladies side, Elisha was recognised and selected to play for the England U21 team in her final year at Millfield. Well done Elisha! Right: Stuart Rushmere with parents Colin and Sandie. Stuart was proud to be awarded the Junior Boys Spirit of Millfield Award. He was also nominated for Junior Performer of the Year. Stuart has been a fantas c role model for boys in the hockey community as well as the en re sports fraternity. Well done to Stuart for being an ambassador for Millfield.

1st XI: BOYS SPRING TERM ROUND UP Following a successful tour to India, the 1XI boys progressed into the Spring Term. (Boys Development Hockey Tour). A er an ini al setback in the first round of the Na onal Cup compe on, the U18 boys regrouped to tackle the Plate. First up, the 1XI boys took on Kings Bruton away from home, winning 5 2. Two weeks later, Wells Cathedral came to Millfield for a 10 goal thriller with the U18s winning 6 4. Marlborough College were next. The 1XI ground out a tough 3 2 win on home soil, progressing to the 4th round against South Dartmoor. This me away from home, on a dry and slow sand based astro, more resilience was required. The 1XI kept their first clean sheet of the campaign by holding out a concession of South Dartmoor short corners a er the final whistle to win 1 0. The annual Sherborne block fixture between both schools doubled up as a quarter final in the Na onal Plate compe on, with the U18 boys winning 6 2. A er the Easter break, the 1XI turned their a en on to Lee Valley for the Plate Finals. We knew li le about our semi final opponents, King s School Chester. Although well organised, we failed to capitalise and lost the fixture late in the second half, 1 0. Day two produced the same result, coming off second best this me to Merchant Taylors. 4th place in the Na onal Plate compe on was a good result for the group who progressed well throughout the season. U16: A er convincingly winning the West Regional Finals, the U16 boys prepared for the Indoor Finals at Whitgi School in London. Match one is always a must win. We persevered through a scrappy game to win 3 2 v Trent College. Game two was against Queen Elizabeth Grammar School. This me round, we allowed the pressure to get to us, losing 2 1 in another ght fought game. Before the day was complete, we were to face Bishops Stor ord. We knew from here on in 3 points were important. With a determined performance, we achieved a drama c 2 1 win. Our last pool match was against hosts Whitgi, who were si ng top of the table. The first half was even, with both sides going close to breaking the deadlock. As the game progressed, we had to push forward for the win, leaving ourselves exposed to the counter a ack and lost 3 0 to the eventual finalists.

BOYS SPRING TERM ROUND UP U16 con nued: Prepara on then turned to the outdoor compe on. The U16s won the county compe on quite convincingly, bea ng Taunton School and Wellington in the pool before turning over Queens College 8 0 in the semi final and Kings College 4 0 in the final. At the preliminary stage, we moved forward with three clean sheets, winning 1 0, 2 0, and 2 0. The Regional Finals were toughly contested. The Kings School Gloucester, who we had beaten weeks before in the preliminary rounds, had done their homework and dented our progress by bea ng us 2 1 in the pool. We reached the semi final stage a er bea ng Cli on College and Canford. The semi final was another pressure situa on for the boys, who didn't par cularly cope well early on. Down 2 0 v Dean Close, the U16 boys fought back in the second half to score once. Unfortunately, that was all we would get. The U16s have proven they are a strong force to contend with na onally and the school is excited about their prospects over the next few years. Contribu on from: Will Stru U14: The U14 boys picked up the county cup again this Spring with an unbeaten run throughout the compe on. In the pool, the U14 boys beat Wells Cathedral 3 0, Kings College 1 0, and Kings Bruton 2 1. In the semi final, we played Taunton School, winning 1 0. The final of the county cup would be the third me we played Kings College already during the season. Each game resulted in a 1 0 win for Millfield. 3 clean sheets in such closely contested matches proves how determined and resilient the group is becoming. Unfortunately, the U14s failed to progress to the Regional Finals a er a slow start in the preliminary round. The group was able to benefit from a tour to Holland in Easter and show signs of promise with their me at Millfield. FOLLOW US ON

GIRLS SPRING TERM ROUND UP 1st XI: The U18 girls started the calendar year with a emp ng to defend their Indoor Na onal tle, hosted at Bromsgrove School. An opening loss against eventual winners Repton (1 3) followed by two wins against Hymers College (3 1) & Beaconsfield (2 1) and an entertaining draw against Framlingham (3 3) resulted in the 1st VI coming 3rd in the group stage, missing out on 2nd place by goal difference. The team performed very well, in par cular Emma Manton, who was superb throughout scoring 6 goals. Prepara on turned to Outdoor again with the 1st XI at the Quarter Final stage of the ISHC compe on and the Na onal Schools Play Off standing in the way of the team progressing to the Na onal Finals. The 1st XI were able to progress through both with good performances against The Goldolphin & Latymer School and GSAL respec vely. The Semi Final of the ISHC compe on was hard fought but the girls were delighted to edge out Rugby School (2 0), booking their place in the Final at Lee The Na onal Schools Finals were first and a er an opening draw against East Winners, The Perse, the next match against South Winners, Ardingly College became hugely important. The 1st XI put in their finest performance against Ardingly leaving the draw against Trent College the following day good enough to top the group and play rivals Repton in the Final. A er early exchanges Repton imposed themselves on the game and the 1st XI struggled to maintain enough possession in the opposi ons half. Although a Runners Up medal was the final outcome, the girls gained immensely from the experience. The last act of the 1st XI's season was the Final of the ISHC Compe on against Felsted School. This would be the last match for many seniors in Millfield colours. It proved to be a fi ng end to a wonderful season and the group were able to regain their ISHC tle, with Elisha Evans being named as the MVP of the Final. Contribu ons from: Lauren Roberts & Emma Manton

GIRLS SPRING TERM ROUND UP U16: A er finishing Runners Up in the Regional Indoor round, the U16 team knew their group games would be very tough at the Super 6 Finals. The opening match was a great advert for indoor hockey with the U16s narrowly losing to South Winners, Cranleigh (2 3). Ripon Grammar was next and thanks to a hatrick by Iona Welch the team's first points were on the board. The games did not get any easier with Midlands Winners, Repton to play the following morning. A 1 2 loss but another great performance by the girls. The last group game was successful against Haileybury (3 0) but sadly not enough to progress through to the Semi Final. The girls were superb throughout despite their results and bodes well for the future. Contribu on from: Becky Manton U15: A er a busy Autumn term the U15A girls had the ISHC Quarter Final to look forward to against a strong Bradfield College side who they played against in last year's Final. It was an immensely entertaining, ght affair of which the girls sneaked in extra me winning 4 3. Diketso Karas con nued her excellent scoring record with a hatrick! This set up another massive fixture against much talked about Surbiton High. A er a below par 1st half performance it was so pleasing to see the girls rally and fight their way back into the contest. The last 10 minutes were end to end but unfortunately the girls just lost out to Surbiton (3 4). The girls showed wonderful character and they would have only benefited from their experience. Contribu on from: Sammy Welsh FOLLOW US ON

NATIONAL AGE GROUP SQUADS with Stuart Rushmere A er a long winter of tough training camps a squad of 18 was picked to represent the England under 18 boys over Easter, where we played against a very strong Holland under 18 side. This was a really big test for the boys as it was our first me playing together in a compe ve match, and for many their first interna onal cap. Holland were very good on the counter a ack and took their chances when they got into our circle, and we lost all three games in the series. However 2 weeks later, a very similar squad was picked to play against a Wales under 21 development team. A er the disappoin ng results against Holland, we had a point to prove, and we came back much stronger and won all three games against Wales. I have just received selec on for the summer, where we have a test series against Belgium, and a test series against Germany. Both of these tours will be a huge challenge for us playing away from home against very good opposi on. However they will prepare us well for the 6 na ons tournament in No ngham taking place in July, where we will play against Holland, Spain, Germany, Belgium and Ireland. Millfield has given me the drive and confidence to aspire to na onal representa on. I am very grateful to have Mr Mathews as my coach at school, who has taught me so much about the game. I am also very privileged to be playing for Team Bath Buccaneers, where I have the opportunity to play alongside more experienced and top interna onal players. However, I like to focus on my long term goal. My dad always tells me it is a long road, and I must just try to keep on improving to be the best that I can be, and not to be put off by short term goals like team selec ons along the way. Georgie McTear and Ellie Emo were also selected in the England U18 summer squads. Anna Gabbitass was selected for the England U16 squad. Stuart playing for England U16s last summer Bea, Anna, Georgie, Ellie, and Becky at Futures Cup

NATIONAL AGE GROUP SQUADS Stuart heads to No ngham to take part in a junior interna onal 6 na ons compe on from the 17th 23rd July. They play v Belgium, Spain, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands. Stuart, Anna, and Ellie all headed to Germany in the first weekend of July. They played a 3 match test series against the Germans. Ellie s side were able to pick up a point with a draw against the Germans in their first match. Stuart, Anna. And Ellie departed for Belgium not long a er the German series for an intense training camp. Stuart s side won the first match v Belgium 3 1. Anna s side were able to claim a 1 1 draw in their second game. STAFF LEAVER: DAVID FAULKNER David Faulkner has only been with us for four years but he has definitely made an impact in that me with us. Mr Faulkner has worked with both the U14A girls and boys teams but has posi vely influenced teams all through the age groups whether that be on our respec ve school hockey tours or at na onal compe ons. An immensely posi ve character within the hockey programme who put a significant importance on individual development. We wish him the best in his new venture, as the Performance Director of English Women's Football. Anna and Ellie head to Teresa, Spain to take part in a junior interna onal 6 na ons compe on. Anna will represent the England U16 team. Ellie fronts up for the England U18 side. They play v Belgium, Spain, Germany, Ireland, and the Netherlands.

In addi on, we reviewed our GOT Scores, which showed how many mes we entered the opposi on's circle and what percentage we converted into goal scoring opportuni es. 9.30am: SWOT Analysis This is when we started to focus on the team we were playing next. We gathered in our various posi onal units and watched footage of the opposi on. We analysed their strengths and weaknesses, what opportuni es that gave us and what threats they posed. The Ashes winner may have been more renowned for his role as Master I/c of Cricket but his role within hockey has been just as important. Mr Ellison has predominately worked with the Junior teams where his impact has been significant. A knowledgable coach who experienced many Na onal Finals with the various teams he has coached. More importantly, Mr Ellison has played a significant part in ins lling core values in young athletes. We wish him the very best in his new role working for the ECB where he will implemen ng those same values.

YEAR 9 EASTER TOUR TO HOLLAND Take a look at our year 9s experience to Amsterdam via the following link Year 9 Easter Tour 32 boys and girls in year 9 had the opportunity to visit Holland for a weeks worth of hockey. The squads were lucky enough to play against the likes of Kennemeer Lyceum and Amsterdam HC. Off the pitch, the group visited Durinell Theme Park and had a masterclass with South African Interna onal, Jus n Reid Ross. DISCOVER YOUR POWER with Georgie McTear Discover your power is an Olympic campaign looking for the top power athletes in the UK. Around 5000 signed up with only 3000 being selected for phase 1. This consisted of many physical tests to see which sport you'd be most appropriate for. I was lucky enough to be chosen for sprint track cycling and canoeing. I thought that cycling suited me be er, so I moved onto phase 2 with 11 other people at Manchester's Velodrome. Phase 3 was for those selected from the 12 to become a final 6. Again, I was selected and had the opportunity to be trained by Bri sh Cycling coaches. This was an amazing opportunity which I had to turn down due to ge ng selected for the England under 18 hockey team. I was thrilled to be part of the Discover your Power campaign but even more excited about playing hockey for England.
