2 Dear Texas 4-H Families: Thank you for being an integral part of the largest youth development program in Texas, and the largest 4-H Program in the world. Texas is proud to boast the largest 4-H membership enrollment, total 4-H participation, and the largest 4-H volunteer base in the United States. In saying that, we are also compelled to tell you that this is indeed a challenging economic time for everyone. The Texas AgriLife Extension Service and 4-H are no different; however we remain committed to ensuring a strong 4-H and Youth Development Program for our families. To maintain the level of programming and opportunities in the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Program, and annual participant fee is necessary for each 4-H member starting with the H year on September 1, This participant fee of $25, or $20 if enrolled from September 1 st to October 31 st, will hopefully ensure that the Texas AgriLife Extension Service can continue to deliver the highest quality 4-H program in the world. A recent nation research study shows: Members reporting better grades, higher level of academic competence, and an elevated engagement at school. Two times as many members likely to plan to go to college than non-members. Members that reveal significantly lower drug, alcohol and cigarette use that their peers. Members that are three times more likely to actively contribute to their communities when compared with youth that do not participate in 4-H. Quite simply, we are convinced that this participation fee is an investment in the youth of Texas. The Texas AgriLife Extension Service is committed to the youth of Texas and it is critically important that each 4-H family knows we are dedicated to continuing to provide the best program worldwide. As we all go through a transition period, we ask each of you to partner with us in creating a positive environment for all our 4-H members. 3 A Word from Kayla The PCLIA Youth Livestock Show is quickly approaching and I know that all of you have been diligently working with your projects and are committed to putting forth your best effort. To maintain the integrity of the Parker County 4-H program, it is very important that you again review and abide by the current rules and regulations of the PCLIA Youth Livestock Show. Remember, your actions not only reflect on you but the Parker County 4-H program. By submitting your entry form you and your immediate family have agreed to abide by the current rules and regulations of the show, and I do expect every 4-H member and parent to adhere to the rules of the PCLIA Youth Livestock Show. Rule books may be found online at Jon and I, as well as the State 4-H Livestock Ambassadors will begin conducting project visits, but please feel free to call if you need any additional assistance with your livestock projects. As a reminder, all livestock projects must remain under the continuous care of the 4-H er. If there is a situation that arises in which the animal will not be under the care of the 4-H er, you will need to notify the office immediately. 6 June Show PCLIA Updates Rabbit New Rabbit Judge Announced - Mike Frankie May 21st Market Rabbit Tag-In from 7 am-9 Sheriff s Posse Grounds PCLIA rules can be found at parker-tx.tamu.edu under the publications tab or at Market Goat The show time listed on page 11 for Market Goats is incorrect. The Market Goat show will begin at Noon on Tuesday, June 14th. Swine Pens have been added to the swine barn. The combined numbers for both breeding and market entries for 2011 are the same as the total market hog entries for Therefore, with the additional pens, stalling room should be a little better this year. We ask that you remain patient with the swine stalling assignments. Parker County 4-H stalls are assigned per exhibitor (not per family). Exhibitors with two hogs will be placed in a drawing for any extra stalls we may have. You may haul in your breeding gilts at the same time you haul in your market hogs. Breeding Gilt Show If you are exhibiting a purebred gilt for the breeding show, the exhibitor must be listed as the owner no later than May 17th. The date of transfer will be used as the ownership date. If the date of transfer is after May 17th you may still exhibit you breeding gilt in the Cross classes. Original papers for pedigreed gilts must be presented to the swine committee when you check your pedigreed breeding gilts in. Ear notches on the pedigree papers and the ear notches on the gilt must match. If you are exhibiting your breeding gilt in the Cross classes, you must turn in your weight cards to Kayla by 6:15 a.m. on Thursday, June 16th. Market Swine Market swine must be in place no later than 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15th. This time will be strictly enforced so don't be late. Kayla will begin distributing market swine weight cards on Tuesday, June 14th. All Parker County 4-H Market Swine weight cards must be turned in to Kayla by 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15th. In past years we've had to track down weight cards and have been very close to the 10:30 a.m. office deadline. We will not jeopardize the other exhibitors entries, so have your cards turned in to Kayla by 10:15 a.m.. 7 Camps District 3 Teen Leader Lab District Teen Leader Lab will be held June 20-22, 2011 at the Texas 4- H Conference Center on Lake Brownwood. Districts 3 and 6 will hold lab together. PROGRAM The theme this year is Welcome to the Great Outdoors. There will be workshops and activities dealing with Leadership, Service Learning, 4-H Opportunities, Team Games, Team-building, and of course DANCING! COST The cost will be $165 per 4-H member and $90 for adult chaperones. This includes five meals, two snacks, two nights lodging, limited accident insurance, a resource fee, facilities fee, program items and a camp shirt. REGISTRATION - Registration will be open on 4-H Connect from April 18 - May 31 Kitchen Bootcamp Dates: June 7-9 Cost: $40.00 per child Morning Class 9AM-12PM Ages 6-9 years old Ages: 6-18 Spaces Are Limited Afternoon Class 2PM-5PM Ages 10 & Older This program is designed to teach kids that learning how to cook can be a fun and useful experience. This hands-on training will include all safety rules needed to work in a kitchen. Each child will experience working alongside an adult using kitchen appliance & utensils. Kids will learn how to read and understand cooking terminology (measuring, blending, and serving). Each child will have the opportunity to eat and enjoy what they have prepared. Golf Course/Turf Grass Management- Looks at research based information on how turf grass can be managed and importance of in managing and maintaining golf courses and career opportunities present in these fields. 13 Spring Creek 4-H H Club S pring Creek's April meeting was held on the 11th; our program for the evening was officer elections for the 2011/ H year. Donations were accepted to make a "Movie Basket" to place in the 4-H Project Show's silent auction. Our May 9th meeting will be our annual pizza and ice-cream party held in the outdoor Spring Creek Baptist Tabernacle. Parker Paws will be presenting a short program on their dog adoption program then we will adjourn for ice-cream and games. Come join us! Pizza at 6:45pm; program at 7pm.
