Jefferson County 4-H Annual Awards Program Book Our Awards Program Book is a huge success thanks to all of the members and leaders who get behind our efforts! This is the 4th year that we will sell ads to help defray some of the cost associated with our annual awards program. As in the past the book is spiral bound and includes the ads of our sponsors, family and friends. Again, the ads can be purchased in 4 sizes: business card, 1/4 page, 1/2 page and full page (sheets enclosed). Families & friends can sponsor an ad highlighting their 4-Her s accomplishments for the year, or dedicate a page to a 4-Her who is graduating; business owners and companies can promote their product or service, etc. You can make as many copies of the form as necessary. All order forms, ads and money should be turned in by July 22nd, to the 4-H office. Please contact your club manager or our office for forms. The proceeds will help to cover gift certificates, awards, etc. that we incur annually for the Awards & Recognition Program held in August. If you need more information or have any questions, please call the Extension office, Senior Leadership Lab Use your heart to get a head start is the theme for the 2011 Senior Leadership Lab. The purpose of Leadership Lab is intended to help young people develop and practice leadership skills through recreation and education. Activities are designed to build teamwork, knowledge and skills, as well as encourage camaraderie among youth. There will be 4 educational sessions. The cost of lab is $155 per person and includes 2 nights lodging, cafeteria meals, banquet, educational supplies, program activities and 3 t-shirts. No bus transportation will be provided to Sam Houston State University. If interested please register on line via 4- H Connect by May 27th. 3 State Roundup & Invitational Intermediate age 4-Hers from around the state will have the opportunity to compete in six new invitational style contests and workshops. These contests and workshops will give younger 4-Her members and other senior 4-H ers the opportunity to come and participate for the day. All events that intermediate and senior 4-Hers are eligible to participate in are listed below: 4-K for 4-H Walk & Run: Youth, volunteers, parents, and County Extension Agents will have the opportunity to participate in the 4-K for 4-H Walk and Run. Held at Kyle Field, this event will give participants the opportunity to promote living a healthy lifestyle and participate in a physical activity while away from home. Participation in the 4-K for 4-H can also be used by county 4-H programs as a fundraiser. Discover Scientific Method: Science, Engineering & Technology Poster Comp.: The 4-H S.E.T. experience is a program framed in science, engineering and technology concepts. We would like to implement science, engineering and technology in the forefront of all 4-H project work. The Discover Scientific Method program will allow youth to apply the scientific method to the subject matter they have learned through their 4-H projects. The scientific method is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions. Scientists use the scientific method to explore relationships in nature. The poster contest will allow the youth an opportunity to display and explain through the scientific method their project, research and observations. Healthy Lifestyles Invitational & Workshop: The 4-H Healthy Lifestyles Invitational will provide youth the opportunity to participate in a competitive event and utilize the knowledge and skills gained through participation in 4-H healthy lifestyles programs. With a set-up similar to the 4-H Consumer Decision Making Contest, the healthy lifestyles will consist of two parts: (1) Judging participants will be presented with a scenario and must rank the four products/choices based upon the situation at-hand; (2) Presentation teams are presented with a scenario and must work together within a given amount of time to analyze the situation, develop a solution and make a team presentation to a panel of judges. Note: 4-H members entered as individuals will be randomly grouped into teams for the presentation. Team and individual awards will be given. Invitational Livestock Judging Contest & Workshop: This contest will give youth the opportunity to further their knowledge and skills when evaluating livestock through a workshop/practicum setting. Contest will include: four judging classes (beef, swine, sheep/ goat), two keep/cull classes, quiz (over production and Quality Counts,) questions over judging classes (5 questions per class.) Invitational Poultry Judging Contest & Workshop: Youth will be judging 9 classes. Call for more information. Quilt Challenge: The Quilt Challenge will provide youth the opportunity to utilize their sewing skills gained in the Clothing and Textiles project to complete a quilt that will be judged and then donated to a charity of their choice. Individuals, teams, groups, or clubs may enter the 2010 State 4-H Quilt Challenge. Each team will be given a challenge fabric that must be incorporated into the quilt design. Quilts may have any design or theme but must incorporate the use of some of the challenge fabric supplied by the contest sponsor in combination with other fabrics determined by the quilters. All quilts must have some sort of 4 -H identification incorporated into the quilt top. Wildlife Contest and Workshop: The Wildlife Contest and Workshop will give youth the opportunity to explore five 4-H Natural Resource Project Areas. These areas include: sportfishing, Hunting/Wildlife, Forestry, Entomology, and Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Plan(WHEP) This three part contest includes identification, decision making, and a knowledge and skills quiz that cover the five afore mentioned areas.
