If you are new this year, or you ve been in 4-H for a while we want your experience to be a very positive one. Everyone should have at least one project, and if the project you are interested in is not offered in your club, please call the office so we can see what we can do. If your club meeting dates or times don t fit your schedule, we have other clubs that you can look in to, just let us know so we can help. There are several projects to be involved in. Some of the county projects are county-wide and anyone can participate in these projects. Feel free to call and find out what is available or check your monthly newsletters. Remember, when projects, activities, events and contests are mentioned in the newsletter, and you are a little interested, please call the office, , to find out more and any other questions you might have. Please let us help make your 4-H experience all it can be! 4-H Membership As a 4-H member there are a couple of very important parts of your membership. One is that you must have a least one project and two, you must Horse Validations attend monthly meetings. If you miss two or more consecutive meetings you become ineligible to participate in any county, district or state contests and/or events, any local or other county livestock shows, shooting sports as well as, any district or state events. If you are planning to participate in the District or State Horse Show you will need to validate your horse(s) by April 14th and cost $10 per horse. If you register from April 15th May 1st, it s $20 per horse. The District Horse Show is scheduled for June 20-22, You will need to register your horse on 4-H Connect. If you validated your horse last year, you do not need to upload pictures, etc. But, if this is your first year, you will need to upload pictures and registration papers. Please call the office for instructions on this process,

2 Page 2 Jefferson County 4-H News Club s Corner... County Fashion Show Our County Fashion Show was held on February 25th. We had 12 4-Her s and 3 Clover Kids participating. Listed below are the names and categories: Clover Kid: Hannah Bergeron, Madison Crawford & Vallie Deville; Juniors/Buying: Lauryn Wooten, Semi Formal/ Formal, 1st; Senior/Buying: Miriam Simpson, Fantastic Fashions Under $25, 1st place; Construction/Junior: Jonathan Bergeron, Everyday Living, 1st; Rebekah Bergeron, Semi Formal/Formal, 1st; Addison Carraway, Everyday Living, 3rd; Luke Landry, Everyday Living, 2nd; Jordan Morgan, Everyday Living, 3rd; Intermediate: Maggie Landry, Everyday Living, 1st; Shiloh Sandford, Everyday Living, 2nd; Senior: Jaalah Baaheth, Theatre/Costume, 2nd; Naamah Baaheth, Semi Formal/Formal, 1st; Noah Landry, Theatre/Costume, 1st. Thanks to our judges for their time and assistance. All participants can go to District! If you are going to participate at District, the deadline is April 10th to submit your paperwork and registration online via 4-H Connect by April 16th. 4-Her s in the news... Ambassadors at the Capital was held on March 7th. Elsie Morris Thomas was one of 8 out of 33 Shooting Sports Ambassadors selected to attend. She was there with the 8 Shooting Sports Ambassadors, 10 Livestock Ambassadors, and 2 Equine Ambassadors. They met with Senators, Representatives, The Texas Comptroller, an Environmental Attorney and others who spoke about the Agricultural, Shooting Sports, and Property Rights issues in the State. Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo: Logan Perry participated in the Calf Scramble on 3/17 and caught a calf. Way to go Logan! We also had 1 team each of Junior & Intermediate 4-Hers participate in Livestock Judging. The teams placed in the top 1/3 of 1633 contestants. Thanks to the Millers for sponsoring their entry fees so they could participate and Ms. Palacio for going out to help. Each year we are improving and looking forward to the STSF and District. 3 Volume 15, Issue 4 Page 3 County Air Rifle Results The County Air Rifle Match was held on March 9th, with 33 4-Her s participating. The 4-Her s participating were as follows: Juniors: Natalie Bean(1st), Jacob Bergeron, Jonathan Bergeron, Rebekah Bergeron, Quade Broussard, Brayden Evans (4th), Carter Forrest (3rd), Helen Moore, Garritt Morton, Chance Ross, Sawyer Sandford, Sarah Schreck (3rd), Nehlen Sobutka; Intermediates: Jeremiah Bergeron, Dylan Castaneda, Isaac Deville, Olivia Gallegos (2nd), Jarren Illa-Postel, Alexander Jaime, Blake Makelki (3rd), Sarah Morton (4th), Shiloh Sandford (1st), Matthew Satchfield, Clara Schreck, Chelsea Tyler; Seniors: Colton Austin (1st), Wesley Deville, Jacob Gallegos, Valerie Hill, Elsie Morris Thomas (4th), Matthew Robins (3rd), Kennedy Simon, Faith Tyler (2nd) Thanks to all who helped with this project and congratulations to all our participants County Rifle match The County Rifle Match will be held on April 8th at the Golden Triangle Gun Club. Anyone who is planning to participate in this event will need to: 1) have a membership form on file; 2) paid their $10 project fee. Please call the Extension office or let Mr. Maxwell know if you will participate as you will need to turn in a eligibility form (pink form) before participating in the event. The District Rifle Match will be held on May 6th in Rosenberg. You will need to let Mr. Maxwell know if you will participate on April 8th as well. You will register via 4-H Connect for the district match by April 23rd and the fee is $15.00 per person, per discipline. Validation Tags for Major Livestock Shows It s that time of year again for major show tags: Swine: If you are interested in showing pigs in Dallas you will need to order validation tags by April 17th. The cost of each tag is $15.00, late orders, $18 + $25 for shipping. Lamb/Goat: If you are interested in showing a lamb or goat in Dallas you will need to order validation tags by May 1st. Please call as soon as possible if you need to order tags. The cost of each tag is $ Steer: If you are planning to show steers in ANY of the major shows, Houston, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Dallas, etc., you will need to order steer tags. The cost of each tag is $15.00 and due when you place your order. The deadline to order tags is April 17th. No tags will be ordered without payment in advance for any tag orders.

4 Page 4 Jefferson County 4-H News County Photography Contest We held our County Photography Contest on February 24th. A big THANKS to Paula Guajardo for being the project leader and Lena Morris for her assistance as well. And we also would like to thank Richard Vasser & Jayme Deville for their time in judging all the photographs. We appreciate all of you! We had 16 youth (1 Clover Kid, Kira Sandford), 3 adults and 54 photographs! Everyone did an awesome job. 6 Page 6 Jefferson County 4-H News BBQ Fundraiser This is a fund raiser to support the activities and events of Jefferson County 4-H. The date of the event is April 22, 2017, and we will put the dinners together. We hope your pre-sales will go as well or better than last year. We will also have a 4-H BBQ Queen and/or King from each club and then an overall BBQ Queen and King will be chosen. Rules: 4-H clubs should select their candidates (1 boy &/or 1 girl) to the Royal Court according to the highest total of individual ticket sales. Every year each club is represented during ticket sales by their queen/king candidate. There are no age requirements. They must have completed at least one (1) project to be eligible to serve as candidate. Clubs Queen/King Candidates name & all ticket sales must be turned in by April 10, 2017 to the Extension Office. Again, this year s King/Queen will each receive a buckle. Also there will be a drawing for a BBQ grill. The cost of the ticket for the drawing is $1. Thanks to ASCO for donating the grill this year. This will be a huge fundraising effort which will require everyone s help and cooperation. So mark your calendars for April 22, 2017 to help during the event and sell those tickets. Let your friends and neighbors know!
