1 TGC 4-H Newsletter Livestock Projects All 4-Hers who are interested in showing animals should have their project selection almost complete or be in the process of selecting animals for all major livestock shows or least know how many animals they will be wanting to purchase & raise. Steers have already been validated; sheep, goats and pigs showing in the State Fair-Dallas have been validated. August will be the month to place orders for sheep, goat & swine tags! EVERYONE (including 4-H & FFA members) who are interested in showing sheep, goats, and/or swine will need to indicate AND PAY for the number of validation tags they will want to order. This will include everyone who will be showing in the winter and early spring, including the county show AND all major livestock shows. Tags will cost $10 per tag, and you will need to indicate the number of sheep or goats or swine tags you want to order. If participants are wanting to participate in the county show only which is held in January, tags will be $3 per tag. Just remember that the COUNTY ONLY tags are just that - it will not allow the animal to show in any other show but Tom Green County or your local school show. All other shows including San Angelo Stock Show are considered a MAJOR SHOW and must have the state validation tag. Deadline to turn in orders and pay for tags will be AUGUST 28 TH!&!!! **NOTE: PLEASE help us by spreading the word and checking with others who are interested in showing livestock to contact the Extension office or their Ag teacher as soon as possible. More tags can be ordered after the deadline but late orders will cost $20 per tag!! Validation and tagging for all animals will be in mid-october and must be completed by October 31 st. Tag orders are also expected for Breeding sheep. Those exhibitors who might be interested in showing Heifers in any of the major shows need to check with their breed Association for deadlines of paperwork. Heifers do not have to be validated but several associations require their registration and paperwork to be in exhibitors name and turned in by October 1 st deadline and others are by November 1 st. If you need assistance in checking with your breed association - feel free to contact the county Extension office. Typically copies of registration papers must be taken as verification at each of the major shows and some information will be included on the individual exhibitors entry form. Reminder: If you validated a sheep or goat specifically for the State Fair of Texas and it will not go - YOU WILL NEED TO RE- ORDER AND RE-VALIDATE FOR THE SPRING SEASON. NO PREVIOUSLY VAL- IDATED ANIMALS WILL BE CARRIED OVER TO THE NEW SEASON! ***IMPORTANT INFO: EACH year every exhibitor must be certified with Quality Counts verification. It is advisable that you not wait until the last minute to get certified with this requirement. Those who might be moving into a different age category (14 yrs old ) will need to retest for the new year. ALL Major stock show entries for the 2014 season will REQUIRE a verification number on each entry before they are accepted. If you are in need of assistance either in finding an animal or need any additional info, please contact the office at or Courtney Redman at Although we currently do NOT have an Ag/NR agent - we hope to have one in the coming month to six weeks but we do have resources and individuals to help the office until a new Ag agent is hired. We will be glad to help in any way! Annual Awards Banquet The 4-H Annual Awards Banquet for Tom Green County will be held on Sunday, September 15th at 3 PM at the Tom Green 4-H Center. Best of Luck to those participating in the State 4-H Horse Show in Abilene, July Wildlife Camp This years Wildlife Camp will be held at Lake O.H. Ivie on August 1-2, For those of you that have not attended in the past, this camp is very western. We camp at the Lakeside Pavilion, an open air pavilion, in tents and sleeping bags. This camp may not be for the faint of heart. It is hot and there are bugs! But it is a fun camp for kids who like the outdoors and like to fish, swim, hunt, and chase guyanthers all night. (Editor s Note: this used to be also called snipe hunting back in the day!) The cost of the camp is $20 per camper which covers supplies and meals. We have three educational sessions on Thursday afternoon that have been things like boating safety, lure making, casting wildlife tracks, first aid, reptiles, wildlife etc. We also do one session after dinner at the pavilion. It has ranged from a 4-H member doing a brigade presentation to a deer necropsy. On Friday morning, we do shooting sports. Archery, Riflery, and Skeet. The kids rotate through the three stations. The camp is from noon on Thursday (Aug 1st) until noon on Friday (Aug 2nd). It seems short but you will be ready to leave by Friday noon! Please signup by July 26. This gives us time to order all the food and supplies for the camp. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend. Setting up tents and helping these kids deal with the outdoors is a job and we need help. There is a restroom available and a refrigerator. Everything else we bring. For complete schedule - things to bring and other information, see the sent out earlier this week or call the Runnels County Extension office at (325) H National Youth Science Day On October 9, 2013, millions of young people will become scientists for the day during the sixth annual 4-H National Youth Science Day (NYSD). This event, which takes place in urban, suburban and rural communities all across the nation, seeks to spark an early youth interest and leadership in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers in an effort keep America competitive in those fields. This year, the National Science Experiment will be 4-H MAPS & APPS! Designed by Colorado State University Extension, the year s set of activities will turn young people into geospatial thinkers as they design and map their ideal park, use GIS mapping to solve community problems and contribute data about their community to the United States Geological Survey. Currently, more than five million young people across the nation participate in 4 H STEM programming in topics as varied as robotics, agricultural science, rocketry, wind power, environmental science and alternative energy. For more than 100 years, 4-H has been at the forefront of teaching young people about science, engineering technology and math (STEM). 4-H National Youth Science Day is the premier national rallying event for year-round 4-H STEM programming, bringing together youth, volunteers and educators from the nation s 109 land-grant colleges and universities to simultaneously complete the National Science Experiment.
