1 TGC 4-H Newsletter RECORDBOOKS All record books will be due in the Extension office at 5 PM, Wednesday, June 18 th. If you need help completing one, please give Courtney or Kathy a call. These forms and books must be turned in to be eligible for a year pin or project pin or any year end awards at the Annual Awards Banquet which will be held in September. Record book forms are available online and can be downloaded using Word, WordPerfect or PDF format. You will be able to edit, add pictures and print out your information from your own personal computer. *Forms for the different age division can be found on the Texas 4-H website. Member Achievement Plans (MAPS) are no longer available online but if you are interested in completing a MAP (which is for 1 project & 1 year info) instead of a complete recordbook, we have copies here in the office for you to complete. There are also guidelines and powerpoint demonstrations to assist you in learning the new recordbook forms. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact Courtney at Year End Awards Please remember to keep working on your recordbooks. It is much easier and less stressful to work on those project record keeping plans through the year rather than waiting until deadline to remember all your activities. DEADLINE FOR RECORDBOOKS IS JUNE 18 TH. The annual 4-H Banquet is scheduled for September 21st at the 4-H Building and plans are still being finalized. More information will be available in the upcoming months. Annual year-end awards will include: GOLD STAR - for 4-Hers years old, completed 3 years in 4-H and 3 projects turned in a completed Awards program Recordbook, exhibited leadership skills/ club officer, jr. leader, participated in community service activities, participated in at least 3 of the following areas: citizenship, educational presentations, camps, or public relations. SILVER STAR - for 4-Hers years old, completed 2 projects, turned in a complete Awards program recordbook, participated in community service activities. BRONZE STAR - for 4-Hers in 3 rd grade or 9 yrs old thru 11 years, completed 1 project, turned in a complete Awards Program recordbook, and participated in community service activities. I DARE YOU - for 4-Hers years old, completed 3 years in 4-H and 2 projects, turned in a complete Awards Program Recordbook, exhibits a potential for leadership. Page 2 Important Reminders: County Camp, PrimeTime & Horizons camp Info: Just a reminder for ALL persons interested in attending any of the camps at the Texas 4-H Center at Lake Brownwood, ALL RESERVA- TIONS AND PAYMENTS FOR THE CAMP MUST BE DONE THRU ActiveNetwork at the Texas 4-H Center at: texas4hcenter.tamu.edu and look for the register button in middle of page..please NOTE!!! 4-H CENTER EARLY CAMP REGISTRATION WILL BE EXTENDED TO JUNE 14. REG- ISTER FOR CAMPS FROM THE 4-H CENTER WEBSITE, Submit $25 deposit or pay full amount at time of registration. Family may add supplemental payments up till June 23 at which time ALL FEES ARE DUE. Total cost for the camp is $180 per camper for County Camp (Session 1); $230 per camper for PrimeTime; and $280 for Horizons Camp. Final payment of the camp can be paid by credit card or e-check. The annual camps are open to anyone! You DO NOT have to be a member of 4-H to attend the camp. Any questions, please call. District 7 Leadership Lab: will be held at the Texas 4-H Center on Lake Brownwood on June 25 thru June 27. (Wednesday -Friday). This is the annual District meeting and election of officers, open to all District 4-H Council officers plus representatives from each county. All participants must be at least 13 years of age by the date of Leadership Lab. Registration is done online thru 4- H Connect and registration will be held no later than June 2 nd without a late fee attached. If you are wanting to run for a District Council position, all applications must be turned in to the County office by June 3rd. Please check letter, agenda, forms and links to 4-H Connect thru the District 7 website at: h.tamu.edu and click under Calendar of Events and look for Leadership Lab for guidelines and to complete the forms. Steer & Sheep/Goat Validation All Exhibitors in Tom Green County who will be showing steers in the upcoming show season will need to have their steers validated on Wednesday, June 18th beginning at 8:00 AM. The validation process will take place at the Chad Thomas Livestock farm located at City Farm Rd off Hwy 67 North. If you have any problems or will be unable to attend the validation process, please call the Extension office or Josh ASAP to let us know. All show steers MUST BE validated no later than June 30 th. All Sheep & Goat exhibitors who ordered tags and plan to show in the State Fair of Texas in Dallas will need to have their animals validated on Monday, June 23 th from 6-8 PM at the 4-H Building arena. This will be the only scheduled validation event and all sheep & goats must be validated before June 30 th to be eligible to show in the State Fair. If you have a problem with either of these events, please contact the office at to let us know. 3 Jr. Fashion Project - Clothing & Textiles There will be two separate 4-H Sewing Workshops this year for all 4-H members wishing to construct an outfit. They will be held from 9:30 AM until 3:00 PM on the following dates and places: ** Tom Green 4-H Center - June 3-5. ** Wall Elementary School Cafeteria - June Each 4-Her is asked to come to the first meeting ready to sew; therefore, you will need to bring the following items: *Sewing machine & attachments (if you do not have a machine, there will be extras that you can borrow-contact Kathy to verify.) *Material (washed & dried), Pattern, Thread to match, Scissors, pins & pin cushion, marking pens, measuring tape, seam ripper, accessories (anything your pattern calls for such as interfacing, elastic, lace, buttons, zipper, etc.) AND a sack lunch. All interested leaders and teen leaders are invited to help with these workshops. Even leaders that do not sew can be put to work on arts and craft projects. All available help would be appreciated. The Tom Green County Fashion Show will be held at the Tom Green 4-H Building on Tuesday, June 24 th beginning with judging at 9:00 AM and Fashion Show at 11:30 AM. The District 7 Jr. Fashion Show will be held Tuesday, July 15 at the Grape Creek Baptist Church. Each county may send a total of 48 winners to the District contest as follows: 24 - Juniors; Ages 8 & 3 rd grade thru 10 yrs old as of Intermediates - ages yrs old as of (12 in the Construction division and 12 in the Buying category in each age group) Participants may wear purchased blouse/shirt if the participant has constructed a skirt/pants or vice versa. The 4 categories in the Construction Division include: Construction Division: 1.) Dressy - garment worn to activities such as church, weddings, banquets and special occasions; examples: dresses, dressy skirt/ blouse, dressy coat/pants. 2.) Everyday Living - includes casual sportswear, weekend-wear, sleepwear, clothing for school, casual after-school events, or hanging out with friends. 3.) Re-Fashion - The result of modifying existing clothing or fabric item (such as table cloth or curtain) into something more fashionable. The main purpose of ReFashion is creativity, as well as sewing skills. The member designs and sews a wearable garment from previously used garments or fabric item. The completed garment is different from its original use, not just an alteration. (Examples: neck ties sewn together to form a skirt or taking old t-shirts and making them into a skirt.) 4.) Special Interest - Entry should be something that reflects a special interest of the participant, such as equestrian clothing and riding apparel, dance costumes, hiking clothing, or rock climbing clothing. Buying Division: Each category can have three individual entries from Junior and Intermediate age divisions. The Buying Division will have four (4) categories: 1.) Dressy - garment worn to activities such as church, weddings, banquets and special occasions; examples: dresses, dressy skirt/ blouse, dressy coat/pants. 2.) Everyday Living - includes casual sportswear, weekend-wear, sleepwear, clothing for school, casual after-school events, or hanging out with friends. 3.) Fantastic Fashions under $25 - This category is designed to expand the 4-H member s shopping experience to include different shopping venues. Outfits must be purchased at a garage sale, consignment store, Goodwill, Salvation Ary, or other retainl business. Receipts are required for everything that is visible during the interview, except shoes. Receipts for garage sales can be handwritten. This includes jewelry and accessories. Do not need to account for sales tax. 4.) Special Interest - Entry should be something that reflects a special interest of the participant, such as equestrian clothing and riding apparel, dance costumes, hiking clothing, or rock climbing clothing. Texas Natural Fiber Competition: 4-H members may also be eligible to compete in the Texas Natural Fiber Competition if the Natural Fiber eligibilty requirements are met; Cotton minimum 65%, and Wool minimum 60%. Awards will be given in each of the Construction and Buying categories. A separate round of judging will take place for the competition. Embellished Apparel Division: Apparel items must be wearable clothing (no bags) embellished with items such as beads, paint, dyes, etc. There are 2 categories and participant may enter only one piece in each category. Categories include: 1) Tops - includes t-shirts, blouses, jackets (no tank tops please; and 2) bottoms - includes pants, skirts, shorts, capris. Jewelry Making Division which has 2 categories and each participant may enter only one piece in each category. Categories include: 1) Jewelry Sets and 2) Jewelry Singles. Non-Apparel Division: All entries in this division must be hand or machine sewn. The non-apparel division will have 6 categories. 1) Pillows -may not be larger than 28"; 2) Quilts or Throws - may not exceed twin bed size. 3) Tote Bags - any size including handbags. 4) Small Electronic Device Cover - Cover to fit a cell phone, blackberry, i-pod, MP3 player, etc 5) Aprons and 6) other - items that do not fit in any other category. Fashion Storyboard: The 4H Fashion Storyboard is an industry inspired method of displaying original designs. The best storyboards create vivid visual images that are interesting and appealing to viewers. The storyboard tells the story of the designer s idea. The storyboard includes original illustrations and flats, as well as additional materials (such as photos from the Internet or magazines, paper, fabric swatches, patterns, etc.) that have influenced the unique design. There are 5 categories that each item must be entered and 4-H members may enter only ONE storyboard per category. *NEW: for the 2014 Fashion Storyboards: Geometry Lesson. It is time to get graphic with playful geometric monochromatic patterns. Anyone can do it. It is all in the angels. Use your math skills to create your original design. Worksheets are available at the County Extension office for the Construction Division, and the Buying Division and will also be mailed out to those who express an interest. There are due into the Extension office by Friday, June 20th. Participants do NOT have to participate in the 4-H Sewing Workshop in order to participate in the Fashion Show, but we need your worksheets no later than Friday, June 20 th. You HAVE to be a 4-H member to participate in the 4-H Sewing workshop. If you are interested in participating in either of the workshops, please call and let us know so we can be prepared. The L4L team of (front row above) Cassie Weishuhn, Rachel Rathmell, and Emily Moeller (unable to attend was member-kendra Schwartz) met with the Court on Tuesday morning, June 3rd. The Leaders 4 Life team would like to thank the court for letting them observe proper meeting procedures, hearing the many facets of county government and learning life skills for future work. 5 Club News A special Thank You to ALL 4-H members and parents who rounded up prizes and items for the Annual Shamrock Shuffle. Numerous items of merchandise were donated for the Silent Auction and there was nearly $1,800 donated during the silent auction and we send special thanks for your hard work and donations. The monies raised specifically in the silent auction go into the Parents & Adult Leaders Association account so that these funds can be used to help in the budget items for all awards and credit sheet monies for all county members. Thanks again!! Lone Star 4-H Club The Lonestar 4-H Club met on Sunday, May 4th at the Rocking Chair Ranch for the end-of- year party. Water bottle donations were brought for the District 7 Camo Run. Over 100,000 can tabs were collected over the year. The tabs generated over $2,000 in supplies for the Ronald McDonald House. A report was given on master gardeners. The new Lonestar club officers were announced: President - Ashley Wilde, Vice-President - Taylor Hoelscher, Secretary - Tara Weber, Treasurer - Lacey Morris, reporter - Emily Niehues, Parliamentarian - Tate Jones, Health & safety officer - Bailey Hooten, Council members - Cassie Weishuhn, Robin Morris, Grady McCrea, Mark Holtman, Emily Moeller, and Kolton Hooten. State Round-up dates were discussed and the qualifiers were recognized and wished good luck. There was no program and there will be no additional meetings until August. New officers were elected to serve in the new 4H year: Maddi Trees (President) Eli Jackson (1st Vice President) Levi Jackson (2nd Vice President) Aaron Jackson (3rd Vice President) Matthew Trees (Secretary) Joshua Jackson (Treasurer) Garrett Guerrerro (Reporter) Nathan Waldron (Parliamentarian) Michael Trees (Safety Officer) Celeste and Sebastian Castillo (County Council Delegates) *** Thanks, Maddi Trees, Reporter TGC 4H Archery Club: On May 15, 2014, the Tom Green 4H Archery Club met for their monthly meeting and end-of-the-year party. New officers were elected: President - Sebastian Castillo 1st Vice President - Matthew Trees 2nd Vice President - Cie Rangel 3rd Vice President - Maddi Trees Secretary - Celeste Castillo Treasurer - Gryphon Ross Reporter - Michael Trees The club held their first 4-H archery tournament on May 17th. There was a great turnout and funds were raised for the upcoming year's activities. *** Thanks, Maddi Trees, Reporter Twin Mountain 4-H Club: Twin Mountain 4-H had their end of the year party at Prime Time in Abilene, TX. The members enjoyed a day of putt-putt, driving race cars, bowling, 3-D roller coasters, and laser tag. The best part was having all the members playing laser tag at one time. It was a competition of members vs. parents and by far the children won. Thanks for all the hard work that the club members put in this year to make our club successful. During our meeting the following officers were nominated and elected to be leaders in Twin Mountain 4-H Club for : President-Rachel Rathmell, 1st Vice President-Colton Fontenot, 2nd Vice President-Matthew Salisbury, Secretary- Mattie Cochran, Treasurer-Kelly Salisbury, Reporter-Chase Morris, Parliamentarian- Makailey Brock, Our 3 County Council Reps will be Kimberly Salisbury, Arianna Ellis, and Addison Powell. We are looking forward to all old members returning in August and want to invite new perspective members to join our active club. Have a great SUMMER! TGC Shotgun Shooting Sports We had a very successful Whiz-Bang event on May 3 rd. We had a perfect round (50 straight) shot in skeet. We want to say Thank You to all of the volunteers and sponsors. The clubs members are attending (and doing a great job) at other county shoots throughout the state. The club is preparing for the State Games meet in July. We are having practice every Tuesday and our business meetings are the second Tuesday of the month. There should be an advanced coach s clinic in August (details to follow) and a 4H instructor clinic in September.
