Sail-past 2014 saw 15 boats join the festivities. The day was brilliant and light winds were perfect for a successful parade that included many members and past-commodores. Members of HMCS Skeena conducted the flag ceremony and provided musical entertainment. Sherene Hrncir provided a lovely blessing of the fleet. Happy and safe sailing everyone! Spring AGM Minutes Recipe of the Month: Homemade Grog Report from the Executive Committee The Club has been a very busy place over the past few weeks. We ve welcomed several new members this year, and there are several new boats in the harbour. We look forward to the enthusiasm these new members bring! Reciprocals are still being updated. The yacht club community is somewhat divided this year, with some clubs following the traditional method of exchanging reciprocal invitation letters and cards, while others have opted for a more efficient method of simply updating their websites with their reciprocal information. 2 Executive Committee Report - continued Did you know? The daily ration of rum for 1740s sailors became known as grog after Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon mixed water with rum rations (he was trying to solve a problem with unruly sailors). Vernon was nicknamed Old Grog for his waterproof boat cloak made of grogham a mix of silk, mohair and wool stiffened with gum. Make your own grog with our recipe on page 3 wish to visit for the most current reciprocal information. Sailing Master Britt has published a new racing handbook for the 2014 season. This year he has included all social events in the racing calendar, making it a handy all-in-one reference for all club members. The Work Party day went very well, with lots accomplished. Thanks to everyone for coming out and pitching in! There are still jobs to be completed around the property. Most notably, a section of the north wall requires its plywood facing to have holes (for water flow) drilled into them and then installed. Anyone wishing to help with this task please contact Tony Peters. (See our handy Member Contact List in this issue!) Additionally, check the list and property maintenance log books located in the clubhouse for tasks that need to be completed. Social News The 2014 Calendar of Events has been updated with a couple of changes, and has been included in this edition of The Rudder. This complete calendar has also been included in the sailing instructions booklet produced by the Sailing Master. Both make a handy complete reference for activities happening in the Club, so be sure to keep one handy. Brockport Weekend: August 1-3 Call for Volunteers! Planning is underway for the Brockport Weekend. PHYC is the host club this year, and Jan Marani has volunteered to coordinate. However, she needs help! All members are encouraged to volunteer some time to help Jan with event planning and/or helping out with various tasks over the course of the weekend. How to help? Watch for sign-up sheets to be posted in the clubhouse, and volunteer yourself in one or more areas Or, contact Jan directly to offer your help What does the following mean: Wind before rain, let your topsail fill again. Rain before wind, sheets and topsails mind.? If a squall is coming and it starts to blow before you feel any precipitation, the squall will be less severe and short duration. However, if you feel rain before the wind comes up, precipitation is being thrown out of the storm cell violently; you're likely in for quite a ride! Be ready to shorten sails. New Duty Roster An updated duty roster (dated June 9) has been included in this edition of The Rudder, and will be posted in the Clubhouse. Some last minute changes were required due to some changes in membership. Please take note of the date(s) for which you are responsible to be on duty. If you are unable to be on duty on your assigned date, it is your responsibility to arrange to switch dates with another member. All changes in dates must be recorded on the form posted with the duty roster. Members who fail to perform their duty officer requirements will be assigned a $25 penalty. Keep the Volunteer Spirit! Just a reminder to all members, old and new, that Port Hope Yacht Club is a small self-help club. That means that everyone needs to pitch in and lend a hand to make sure that the work associated with the running of the Club and the property. Not only does the volunteer spirit make sure that this work is evenly shared, it also has other benefits in increased camaraderie and, best of all, lower costs! PHYC Now on Facebook! A PHYC Facebook group has been created! Restricted to PHYC members, this group provides a place for club members that are Facebook users to connect, chat, and share photos, videos or other items of interest. To join, simply search for PHYC in Facebook and make a request to be added to the group. Not on Facebook yet? The PHYC website will continue to be updated as usual. Know a teenager that needs to accumulate volunteer hours for their high school credit? We can put them to work! (and provide the letter that the school needs) Other News Sail Training Discussion is continuing with a representative of the recreation department at the Town of Port Hope regarding the possibility of jointly hosting a youth sailing camp in the summer of We are only at the ideas and discussion stage as we explore possibilities and potential issues. It has been proposed that an easy way to offer sail training is to take advantage of the Ontario Sailing Association BOOM program. This program equips two instructors with a fleet of boats and all other necessities, such as life jackets, safety launch, insurance, etc., to set up and run a mobile 4 or 5 day sailing program for up to 16 children. Our PHYC liaison and the town representative continue to explore and discuss various options, such as potential funding partners to help reduce costs for disadvantaged families. Recipe of the Month: Homemade Grog (Spiced Rum) 1 Bottle of any kind of Rum (no top shelf required) 3 Vanilla Beans 1 tsp Molasses ½ cup Simple Syrup Mixture or buy ready made Slit vanilla beans lengthwise and add to bottle. Pour in Simple Syrup Mixture to bottle. Let mixture sit for at least one month. The flavour will continue to get better with age. Business Arising from Fall General Meeting Minutes: none Treasurer s Report: Treasurer distributed and reviewed a summary of 2013 financials and a projection of 2014 costs Highlights: o New memberships this year have helped cash flow o Some budget items have been increased over last year; for example: Social budgets for Brockport weekend, as Brockport is coming here this year o Projected total expenses $34K, projected income $36K o Motion: to grant approval to Treasurer to write a cheque in excess of $1000 for the Brockport Committee Moved by: Steve Rhines Seconded by: Rob Prewer Motion carried o Jan has kindly volunteered to audit the books again this year Motion: to accept the Treasurer s Report Moved by: Rob Prewer Seconded by: Jan Marani Motion carried. 8 Property (Tony Peters) o Club property survived quite well over the winter Damage over the winter: Some siding missing from the garage Fascia along the front of the clubhouse was ripped off by the wind o The water has been turned on o 24 th of May is the first clean-up work-party day; pushed off a week to allow members extra time to get masts up first o A notebook has been posted in the clubhouse for members to record jobs that need to be done and volunteer to do the jobs o Potential improvements this year: Running water out to the other side of the garage for visiting boats Repairs to the chimney fascia Add a lever to the chimney damper so that it can be used and prevent heat loss Addition of a receptacle to gather hazardous waste such as leftover paint Replacement/refurbishment of tables would ideally like to replace tables. Harbour (Fred Reid) o Harbour is in good shape is full, with one on the waiting list o The Queen is in really bad shape and needs to be revamped a new bottom needs to be built over the summer and replaced in the fall o Launch is May 10 th Fred is this weekend and next to check moorings 10am on o Tires and rims are needed (Rob has some to donate) o Barrels are needed as well for emergency spares Sailing (Britt Earl) o A new Sailing Instructions booklet is being prepared will be located in the mail slot in the clubhouse when ready (expected to be ready by launch) First race is May 21 st (a tune-up race) o Kate & Britt collaborated on a consolidated calendar that includes all club social and sailing events Next year would like to incorporate the duty roster as well to make a one-stopshop for all club events o Marks are in decent shape; minor repairs needed o Question re: availability of a print-out of race results during the season Britt will do his best to publish results throughout the season Membership (Geoff Boon) o Total of 53 members this year o 3 new full members and a new crewing member o A new application has been recently received; still requires a cheque and approval at the next Executive Committee meeting New Business Clubhouse cleaning in May and June o Before duty roster starts the clubhouse and washrooms can be quite messy o All members are asked to pitch in and do their part to help clean the clubhouse and washrooms during the pre-season o Plenty of supplies will be made available in the supply room Haul-out dates o Exploring the possibility of having a second haul-out, as well as the option of having a later date for everyone o Fred will discuss with the crane operator and take a poll at launch Port Hope Harbour & Waterfront Committee/PHAI update o The club executive is continuing to monitor progress Dredging update o See Commodore s remarks (above) o Dredging is scheduled to start mid-may By-law change
