The components are avaiabe in different versions. 3.2 Principe of operation Product description Area of appication Functiona principe Suppy VEGASON 61 is an utrasonic sensor for continuous eve measurement. It is suitabe for iquids and soids in virtuay a industries, particuary in the water and waste water industry. The transducer of the utrasonic sensor transmits short utrasonic puses to the measured product. These puses are refected by product surface and received again by the rtansducer as echoes. The running time of the utrasonic puases from emission to reception is proportiona to the distance and hence the eve. The determined eve is converted into an appropriate output signa and outputted as measured vaue. Two-wire eectronics 4 20 ma/hart for power suppy and measured vaue transmission over the same cabe. The suppy votage range can differ depending on the instrument version. The data for power suppy are stated in chapter "Technica data" in the "Suppement". The backight of the indicating and adjustment modue is powered by the sensor. The prerequisite for this is a suppy votage at a certain eve. The exact votage specifications are stated in chapter "Technica data" in the "Suppement". This function is avaiabe for instruments with nationa approvas such as e.g. according to FM or CSA ony at a ater date. The optiona heating requires its own power suppy. You can find further detais in the suppementary instructions manua "Heating for indicating and adjustment modue". This function is generay not avaiabe for approved instruments. 3.3 Operation VEGASON 61 can be adjusted with different adjustment media: with indicating and adjustment modue with the suitabe VEGA DTM in conjunction with an adjustment software according to the FDT/DTM standard, VEGASON ma/hart 11
Product description e.g. PACTware and PC with manufacturer-specific adjustment programs AMS or PDM with a HART handhed The entered parameters are generay saved in VEGASON 61, optionay aso in the indicating and adjustment modue or in PACTware. 3.4 Packaging, transport and storage Packaging Transport Transport inspection Your instrument was protected by packaging during transport. Its capacity to hande norma oads during transport is assured by a test according to DIN EN The packaging of standard instruments consists of environment-friendy, recycabe cardboard. For specia versions, PE foam or PE foi is aso used. Dispose of the packaging materia via speciaised recycing companies. Transport must be carried out under consideration of the notes on the transport packaging. Nonobservance of these instructions can cause damage to the device. The deivery must be checked for competeness and possibe transit damage immediatey at receipt. Ascertained transit damage or conceaed defects must be appropriatey deat with. Storage Storage and transport temperature Up to the time of instaation the packaging must be cosed and stored according to the orientation and storage markings on the outside. Uness otherwise indicated, the packaging must be stored ony under the foowing conditions: Not in the open Dry and dust free Not exposed to corrosive media Protected against soar radiation Avoiding mechanica shock and vibration Storage and transport temperature see "Suppement - Technica data - Ambient conditions" Reative humidity % 12 VEGASON ma/hart
Mounting 4 Mounting 4.1 Genera instructions Wetted materias Instaation position Moisture Make sure that the wetted parts of VEGASON 61, especiay the sea and process fitting, are suitabe for the existing process conditions such as pressure, temperature etc. as we as the chemica properties of the medium. You can find the specifications in chapter "Technica data" in the "Suppement". Seect an instaation position you can easiy reach for mounting and connecting as we as ater retrofitting of an indicating and adjustment modue. The housing can be rotated by 330 without the use of any toos. You can aso insta the indicating and adjustment modue in four different positions (each dispaced by 90 ). Use the recommended cabes (see chapter "Connecting to power suppy") and tighten the cabe gand. You can give your VEGASON 61 additiona protection against moisture penetration by eading the connection cabe downward in front of the cabe entry. Rain and condensation water can thus drain off. This appies mainy to mounting outdoors, in areas where moisture is expected (e.g. by ceaning processes) or on cooed or heated vesses. Fig. 2: Measures against moisture penetration Measuring range The reference pane for the measuring range is the ower edge of the transducer. VEGASON ma/hart 13
Mounting Make sure that a min. distance - the so caed dead zone - beow the reference pane is maintained in which a measurement is not possibe. The exact vaue of the dead zone is stated in chapter "Technica data" in the "Suppement". 1 2 Fig. 3: Min. distance to the max. eve 1 Dead zone 2 Reference pane Information: If the medium reaches the transducer, buidup can form on it and cause fauty measurements ater on % 0% Fig. 4: Measuring range (operating range) and max. measuring distance 1 fu 2 empty (max. measuring distance) 3 Measuring range 14 VEGASON ma/hart
Mounting Pressure/Vacuum Gauge pressure in the vesse does not infuence VEGASON 61. Low pressure or vacuum does, however, damp the utrasonic puses. This infuences the measuring resut, particuary if the eve is very ow. With pressures under bar (-20 kpa) you shoud use a different measuring principe, e.g. radar or guided microwave. 4.2 Mounting instructions Screwing in Screw VEGASON 61 into the mounting socket with an appropriate spanner appied to the hexagon of the process fitting. Max. torque see chapter "Technica data". Warning: The housing must not be used to screw the instrument in! Appying tightening force on the housing can damage its rotationa mechanica parts. Instaation position When mounting VEGASON 61, keep a distance of at east 200 mm (7.874 in) to the vesse wa. If the sensor is instaed in the center of dished or round vesse tops, mutipe echoes can arise. These can, however, be suppressed by an appropriate adjustment (see "Setup"). 2 1 > 200 mm Fig. 5: Mounting on round vesse tops 1 Reference pane 2 Vesse center or symmetry axis VEGASON ma/hart 15
Mounting If you cannot keep this distance you shoud carry out a fase echo memory before setup. This appies mainy if buidup is expected on the vesse wa. In this case, we recommend to repeat a fase echo memory ater with existing buidup. In vesses with conica bottom it can be advantageous to mount the sensor in the center of the vesse, as measurement is then possibe down to the owest point of the vesse bottom. Fig. 6: Vesse with conica bottom Socket Socket pieces shoud be dimensioned such that the ower end of the transducer protrudes at east 10 mm (0.4 in) out of the socket. ca. 10 mm Fig. 7: Recommended socket mounting 16 VEGASON ma/hart
Mounting If the refective properties of the medium are good, you can mount VEGASON 61 on sockets higher than the transducer ength. You wi find recommended vaues for socket heights in the foowing iustration. The socket end shoud be smooth and burr-free, if possibe aso rounded. Carry out a fase echo storage. h d h 80 mm/3" 100 mm/4" 150 mm/6" 150 mm/6" 300 mm/12" 400 mm/16" d Fig. 8: Deviating socket dimensions Sensor orientation Direct the sensor in iquids as perpendicuar as possibe to the product surface to achieve optimum measurement resuts. Fig. 9: Orientation in iquids To reduce the min. distance to the medium, you can aso mount VEGASON 61 with a beam defector. By doing this, it is possibe to fi the vesse neary to maximum. Such an arrangement is suitabe primariy for open vesses such as e.g. overfow basins. VEGASON ma/hart 17
Mounting ~400x ~200 Fig. 10: Beam defector Vesse instaations The utrasonic sensor shoud be instaed at a ocation where no instaations cross the utrasonic beam. Vesse instaations such as for exampe, adders, imit switches, heating spiras, struts etc. can cause fase echoes superimposed on the usefu echo. Make sure when panning your measuring site that the utrasonic signas have "free access" to the measured product. In case of existing vesse instaations, a fase echo storage shoud be carried out during setup. If arge vesse instaations such as struts or supports cause fase echoes, these can be attenuated through suppementary measures. Sma, incined sheet meta or pastic baffes above the instaations scatter the utrasonic signas and avoid direct fase echoes. α α α α α α Agitators Fig. 11: Cover smooth profies with defectors If there are agitators in the vesse, a fase echo storage shoud be carried out with the agitators in motion. This ensures that the interfering refections from the agitators are saved with the bades in different positions. 18 VEGASON ma/hart
Mounting Fig. 12: Agitators Infowing medium Do not mount the instruments in or above the fiing stream. Make sure that you detect the product surface and not the infowing product. Fig. 13: Infowing iquid Foam Through the action of fiing, stirring and other processes in the vesse, dense foams which consideraby damp the emitted signas may form on the product surface. If foams are causing measurement errors, the sensor shoud be used in a standpipe or, aternativey, the more suitabe guided radar sensors (TDR) shoud be used. Guided radar is not infuenced by foam generation and is particuary suitabe for such appications. VEGASON ma/hart 19
Mounting Air turbuences Standpipe measurement If there are strong air currents in the vesse, e.g. due to strong winds in outdoor instaations, or because of air turbuence, e. g. by cycone exhaustion you shoud mount VEGASON 61 in a standpipe or use a different measuring principe, e.g. radar or guided radar (TDR). By using a standpipe (surge or bypass tube), the infuence of vesse instaations, foam generation and turbuence is excuded. Standpipes must extend a the way down to the requested min. eve, as measurement is ony possibe within the tube. max. 1 min. Fig. 14: Standpipe in tank 1 Vent hoe ø 5 10 mm ( in) VEGASON 61 can be used from tube diameters of 40 mm (1.6 in). Avoid arge gaps and thick weding joints when connecting the tubes. Generay carry out a fase echo storage. Measurement in a standpipe is not recommended for very adhesive products. 20 VEGASON ma/hart
Connecting to power suppy 5 Connecting to power suppy 5.1 Preparing the connection Note safety instructions Take note of safety instructions for Ex appications Aways keep in mind the foowing safety instructions: Connect ony in the compete absence of ine votage If overvotage surges are expected, overvotage arresters shoud be instaed Tip: We recommend using VEGA overvotage arresters ÜS-F-LB-I and ÜSB 62-36G.X. In hazardous areas you shoud take note of the appropriate reguations, conformity and type approva certificates of the sensors and power suppy units. Seect power suppy Seecting connection cabe Cabe gand ½ NPT Power suppy and current signa are carried on the same twowire cabe. The votage suppy range can differ depending on the instrument version. The data for power suppy are stated in chapter "Technica data" in the "Suppement". Provide a reiabe separation between the suppy circuit and the mains circuits according to DIN VDE 0106 part 101. The VEGA power suppy units VEGATRENN 149A Ex, VEGAS- TAB 690 as we as a VEGAMETs meet this requirement. Bear in mind the foowing factors regarding suppy votage: Output votage of the power suppy unit can be ower under nomina oad (with a sensor current of 20.5 ma or 22 ma in case of faut message) Infuence of additiona instruments in the circuit (see oad vaues in chapter "Technica data"). VEGASON 61 is connected with standard two-wire cabe without screen. An outer cabe diameter of 5 9 mm ensures the sea effect of the cabe gand. If eectromagnetic interference is expected which is above the test vaues of EN for industria areas, screened cabe shoud be used. For HART mutidrop operation we recommend as standard practice the use of screened cabe. On VEGASON 61 with cabe gand ½ NPT and pastic housing, a meta ½" threaded insert is mouded in the pastic housing. VEGASON ma/hart 21
Connecting to power suppy Caution: No grease shoud be used when screwing the NPT cabe gand or stee tube into the threaded insert. Standard grease can contain additives that corrode the connection between threaded insert and housing. This woud infuence the stabiity of the connection and the tightness of the housing. Cabe screening and grounding Seect connection cabe for Ex appications If screened cabe is necessary, connect the cabe screen on both ends to ground potentia. In the sensor, the screen must be connected directy to the interna ground termina. The ground termina on the outside of the housing must be connected to the potentia equaisation (ow impedance). If potentia equaisation currents are expected, the connection on the processing side must be made via a ceramic capacitor (e.g. 1 nf, 1500 V). The ow frequency potentia equaisation currents are thus suppressed, but the protective effect against high frequency interference signas remains. Take note of the corresponding instaation reguations for Ex appications. In particuar, make sure that no potentia equaisation currents fow over the cabe screen. In case of grounding on both sides this can be achieved by the use of a capacitor or a separate potentia equaisation. 5.2 Connection steps - Instrument housing Proceed as foows: 1 Unscrew the housing cover 2 If an indicating and adjustment modue is instaed, remove it by turning it sighty to the eft. 3 Loosen compression nut of the cabe entry 4 Remove approx. 10 cm (4 in) of the cabe mante, strip approx. 1 cm (0.4 in) insuation from the ends of the individua wires 5 Insert the cabe into the sensor through the cabe entry 6 Lift the opening evers of the terminas with a screwdriver (see foowing iustration) 7 Insert the wire ends into the open terminas according to the wiring pan 22 VEGASON ma/hart

Set up with the indicating and adjustment modue PLICSCOM 6.4 Setup procedure Address setting HART-Mutidrop In HART-Mutidrop mode (severa sensors on one input) the address must be set before continuing with the parameter adjustment. You wi find a detaied description in the operating instructions manua "Indicating and adjustment modue" or in the onine hep of PACTware or DTM. HART mode Standard Address 0 Parameter adjustment As VEGASON 61 is a distance measuring instrument, the distance from the sensor to the product surface is measured. To have the rea product eve dispayed, an aocation of the measured distance to the percentage height must be made. To carry out this adjustment, the distance is entered with fu and empty vesse. If these vaues are not known, an adjustment with the distance vaues, e.g. 10 % and 90 % is aso possibe. Starting point for these distance specifications is aways the the ower side of the fange (fange version, for a other versions the ower side of the transducer. The actua eve is then cacuated on the basis of these entered vaues. At the same time, the operating range of the sensor is imited from maximum range to the requested range. The rea product eve during this adjustment is not important, because the min./max. adjustment is aways carried out without changing the product eve. These settings can be made ahead of time without the instrument having to be instaed. In the main menu item "Basic adjustment", the individua submenu items shoud be seected one after the other and provided with the correct parameter vaues. In addition, there are various interfering factors which have to be taken into account: agitated product surfaces and foam generation (with iquids); dust generation, materia cones and echoes from the vesse wa (with soids). To adapt the sensor to these different conditions, you shoud first seect "Liquid" or "Soid". 32 VEGASON ma/hart
Set up with the indicating and adjustment modue PLICSCOM Medium Liquid With soids, you can aso choose between "Powder/Dust", "Granuar/Peets" or "Baast/Pebbes". Through this additiona seection, the sensor is adapted perfecty to the product and measurement reiabiity, particuary in products with bad refective properties, is consideraby increased. Enter the requested parameter via the appropriate keys, save your settings and jump to the next menu item with the [->] key. Vesse form Apart from the medium, the vesse shape can aso infuence the measurement. To adapt the sensor to these measuring conditions, this menu item offers different options depending on whether iquid or soid is seected. With "Liquids" these are "Storage tank", "Stiing tube", "Open vesse" or "Stirred vesse", with "Soid", "Sio" or "Bunker". Vesse form Storage tank Enter the requested parameter via the appropriate keys, save your settings and jump to the next menu item with the [->] key. Damping To suppress fuctuations in the measured vaue dispay, e.g. caused by an agitated product surface, an integration time can be set. This time can be between 0 and 999 seconds. Keep in mind that the reaction time of the entire measurement wi then be onger and the sensor wi react to measured vaue changes with a deay. In genera, a period of a few seconds is sufficient to smooth the measured vaue dispay. Damping 0 s Enter the requested parameter via the appropriate keys, save your settings and jump to the next menu item with the [->] key. VEGASON ma/hart 33
Set up with the indicating and adjustment modue PLICSCOM Linearisation curve A inearization is necessary for a vesses in which the vesse voume does not increase ineary with the eve - e.g. with a cyindrica or spherica tank - and the indication or output of the voume is required. Corresponding inearization curves are preprogrammed for these vesses. They represent the correation between the eve percentage and vesse voume. By activating the appropriate curve, the voume percentage of the vesse is dispayed correcty. If the voume shoud not be dispayed in percent but e.g. in or kg, a scaing can be aso set in the menu item "Dispay". Linearisation curve inear Enter the requested parameter via the appropriate keys, save your settings and jump to the next menu item with the [->] key. Sensor-TAG In this menu item you can enter an unambiguous designation for the sensor, e.g. the measurement oop name or the tank or product designation. In digita systems and in the documentation of arger pants, a singuar designation shoud be entered for exact identification of individua measuring sites. Sensor-TAG Sensor With this menu item, the Basic adjustment is finished and you can now jump to the main menu with the [ESC] key. Gating out of fase signas High sockets or vesse instaations, such as e.g. struts or agitators as we as buidup and wed joints on the vesse was cause interfering refections which can impair the measurement. A fase echo storage detects and marks these fase echoes, so that they are no onger taken into account for the eve measurement. A fase echo memory shoud be created with empty vesse so that a potentia interfering refections wi be detected. Gating out of fase signas Change now? Proceed as foows: 34 VEGASON ma/hart
