INLET SUMMARY SHEET SITE: Boot Harbor, Monroe County, Florida DATE AND TIME OF ORIGINAL FIELD SURVEY [TIDE]: 22 June 1994; (-0.34); Boot Harbor, Vaca Cut] UPDATED: In October 2011 using imagery collected in 2010 and RANKING (DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY): (see ranking scale) C. PRINCIPAL RESOURCES AT RISK: Mangroves; wading birds, including the Great egret and the Great white heron; seabirds, including the Double-crested cormorant and Brown pelican. Marina facilities, numerous boats, seawalls, revetments, docks, etc. on Boot and Vaca. For further information refer to the recent ESI map and data and the GRP. PRELIMINARY PROTECTION STRATEGY: Use deflection boom to divert oil flowing west around Vaca away from the shoreline and to divert oil flowing toward Knight Channel to a collection point on Knight (CP3) and to two collection points on Boot (CP1 and CP2). For all three of these CPs, oil is diverted to the shore by limbs of deflection boom. Use protection boom to prevent oil from entering the creek that separates Vaca and Boot. Place protection boom across the entrance to Boot Harbor. Also place protection boom along the western shoreline of Boot to keep oil out of the mangroves. 119

120

Collection Point Description Inlet: Boot Harbor, Monroe County, Florida Site Name: Collection Point #1 Relative Location: Northwest corner of Boot. Latitude: 24 41' " N Longitude: 81 6' " W Currents: Probably 1-2 knots. Shoreline Description: Fine-grained sand beach. Access: By watercraft. 121

Collection Point Description Inlet: Boot Harbor, Monroe County, Florida Site Name: Collection Point #2 Relative Location: Northwest corner of Boot. Latitude: 24 42' 2.216" N Longitude: 81 6' " W Currents: Probably 1-2 knots. Shoreline Description: Fine-grained sand beach. Access: By watercraft. 122

Collection Point Description Inlet: Boot Harbor, Monroe County, Florida Site Name: Collection Point #3 Relative Location: South side of Knight. Latitude: 24 42' " N Currents: Probably 1-2 knots. Longitude: 81 7' " W Shoreline Description: Sand flat in small bay, which has riprap and mangroves around its sides. Thus, place protection boom along those sides. Access: You can drive close to it. 123

INLET SUMMARY SHEET SITE: Vaca Cut, Monroe County, Florida DATE AND TIME OF ORIGINAL FIELD SURVEY [TIDE]: 22 June 1994; (-0.4); Boot Harbor, Vaca ] UPDATED: In October 2011 using imagery collected in 2010 and RANKING (DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY): (see ranking scale) B. PRINCIPAL RESOURCES AT RISK: Mangroves; wading birds, including the Great egret; and seabirds, including the Double-crested cormorant. Marina facilities, boats, seawalls, revetments, docks, etc. along the canals on Vaca and in the Colony Beach area of Fat Deer. For further information refer to the recent ESI map and data and the GRP. PRELIMINARY PROTECTION STRATEGY: Extend a line of deflection boom obliquely across the entrance to the main inlet channel to divert oil to a sandy flat/seawall on the southeast corner of Colony Beach (CP1). Just beyond CP1, place the leading anchor point for a Christmas tree configuration of deflection boom, the east limb of which would divert oil to the sand beach/seawall at CP2. The west limb of this most seaward C. tree connects to the lead anchor point of another Christmas tree configuration of deflection boom in the main inlet channel. The east limb of this second C. tree is designed to divert oil to the seawall/boat ramp at CP4, and the west limb to divert oil to the entrance of a basin on the west shore of the main inlet channel located about 200 yards south of the west end of the Vaca Cut Bridge (CP3). Place protection boom across three channel entrances along the northwest shore of Colony Beach, as well as for about 1000 yards along the highly developed shoreline west of CP3. Extend another line of deflection boom from the U.S. Route 1 Bridge to divert oil out of the main inlet channel and to a collection point in a marina basin on Vaca (west side of main inlet channel; CP5). 111

INLET SUMMARY SHEET SITE: Vaca Cut, Monroe County, Florida (continued) OTHER COMMENTS: Very strong tidal current and large standing waves were observed in this channel, especially beneath the U.S. Route 1 Bridge (Vaca Cut Bridge) during the 1994 field survey. 112

113

Collection Point Description Inlet: Vaca Cut, Monroe County, Florida Site Name: Collection Point #1 Relative Location: Near southeast corner of Colony Beach. Latitude: 24 43' 5.494" N Longitude: 81 1' " W Water Depth Description: On the side of the main inlet channel. Currents: Possibly 2-3 knots out in the channel. Shoreline Description: Sand and rubble tidal flat; seawall at high-tide line. Access: On the side of a big (5-7 acre) grassed lot that should provide good access to the seawall. If the lot has been developed, then you may have to use watercraft. 114

Collection Point Description Inlet: Vaca Cut, Monroe County, Florida Site Name: Collection Point #2 Relative Location: Near middle of the western shoreline of Colony Beach. Latitude: 24 43' " N Longitude: 81 1' " W Water Depth Description: On side of the main inlet channel. Currents: Possibly up to 2-4 knots. Shoreline Description: Sand beach backed by seawall/riprap at the high-tide line. Access: By another vacant grassed lot. If lot is developed, you probably would have to use watercraft. 115

Collection Point Description Inlet: Vaca Cut, Monroe County, Florida Site Name: Collection Point #3 Relative Location: Second canal south of Route 1 Bridge on Vaca (west side of main inlet channel). Latitude: 24 43' " N Longitude: 81 1' " W Water Depth Description: On side of main inlet channel. Currents: Possibly over 4 knots during spring tides (standing waves observed under the bridge by us). Shoreline Description: Canal (basin) entrance surrounded by seawalls. Access: Most likely by watercraft. 116

Collection Point Description Inlet: Vaca Cut, Monroe County, Florida Site Name: Collection Point #4 Relative Location: A quarter of a mile to the southeast of the Vaca Cut Bridge. Latitude: 24 43' " N Longitude: 81 1' " W Currents: Possibly up to 2 knots. Shoreline Description: Small boat ramp flanked by seawalls. Access: If you can get access to the boat ramp, then go by land. Otherwise, use watercraft. 117

Collection Point Description Inlet: Vaca Cut, Monroe County, Florida Site Name: Collection Point #5 Relative Location: On the west side of the main inlet channel, about 350 yards north of the Vaca Cut Bridge. Latitude: 24 44' 1.290" N Longitude: 81 1' " W Water Depth Description: By the main inlet channel. Currents: Possibly up to 4-5 knots (standing waves passing under the bridge observed by us). Shoreline Description: Basin surrounded by seawalls. Access: Probably best by watercraft. 118
