Every day, kids in our neighborhood are learning lifesaving swimming skills thanks to the Y s highly trained, caring instructors who guide students with praise and encouragement. Splashing around in the pool is fun and healthy, too. Check out our wide selection of classes. You re sure to find one that fits your child s needs and your schedule. Not sure of your child s level? Swim Session Dates & Pricing Fall 1: Sept. 8 - Oct. 26 (7 weeks) F: $21 Y: $31 N: $42 Fall 2: Oct Dec. 21 (8 weeks) F: $24 Y: $35 N: $48 Aquatic Policies Participants must be evaluated for proper swim level prior to lessons. Children under the age of 3 and those not yet potty trained must wear a swim diaper or disposable diaper with rubber pants. Bathing caps are required for all swimmers with shoulder length or longer hair. Parents need to be available for bathroom breaks for their child. Pool may be closed and classes cancelled due to severe lightening storms. Make-up classes are not allowed unless cancelled and rescheduled by the YMCA. The YMCA reserves the right to make schedule changes to better serve our members or to cancel/combine classes. PARENT/CHILD SWIM LESSONS Shrimp 6 months 36 months This is an introduction to the aquatic environment for parents and their infants. They learn basic aquatic safety and as children become more comfortable they explore the water independently with help from parents. Sat 9:00 am; 10:25 am PRESCHOOL SWIM LESSONS Pike Ages 3 6 For the beginner swimmer who needs to build skills and confidence in the water. At this level, children begin attending classes without their parents. Children develop safe pool behavior, adjust to the water and develop independent movement in the water. They learn basic paddle stroke and kicking skills. Tue 5:40 pm Thu 5:40 pm Sat 9:00 am; 10:25 am; 11:45 am Eel Ages 3 6 For children who can swim independently in a horizontal position, with 2 bubbles or less on the front, back and side for a minimum of 10 yards. Children must also be comfortable putting their face in the water. They are taught to flutter kick, dive, float and perform the progressive paddle stroke. Tue 5:40 pm Thu 5:40 pm Sat 9:00 am; 10:25 am; 11:45 am Ray Ages 3 6 For children who can swim without a flotation device in a horizontal position on their front, back and side for most of the class. Children are introduced to rotary breathing and overarm recovery. At this level children improve stroke skills, build endurance and perform more progressive diving skills. Tue 5:40 pm Thu 5:40 pm Sat 9:00 am; 10:25 am; 11:45 am Starfish Ages 3-6 For children who can swim on their front without a flotation device for the entire class. Children work on rhythmic breathing, paddling and floating. Tue 5:25 pm; 6:15 pm Thu 5:25 pm; 6:15 pm Polliwog Advanced Ages 6 12 For children who can swim with two bubbles or less but can t swim one length of the pool with out flotation. We work on endurance, floating, front crawl, backstroke and sidestroke. Tue 5:25 pm; 6:15 pm Thu 5:25 pm; 6:15 pm Guppy Ages 6 12 For children who can swim one length of the pool on their front, back and side without flotation or support and are comfortable with rhythmic breathing. Thu 6:15 pm Fri 5:15 pm Minnow Ages 6 12 Children need to be able to swim one length of the pool each front crawl with rotary breathing, backstroke, rudimentary elementary backstroke and sidestroke. Children are introduced to breaststroke and further refine the leadup strokes they have learned. Wed 5:15 pm Fish Ages 6 12 Children must be able to swim 50 yard non-stop using front crawl and backstroke and 25 yards non-stop using sidestroke, elementary backstroke and rudimentary breaststroke. They work to refine those strokes and are introduced to butterfly and flip turns. Children continue learning additional synchronized swimming movements and diving skills, and are introduced to the use of mask and fins. Wed 5:15 pm Fri 6:15 pm Flying Fish Ages 6-12 Students work on refining their strokes, increasing their endurance and are introduced to the use of a snorkel. Wed 6:15 pm Fri 6:15 pm Shark Ages 6-12 Children must be able to swim 100 yards front crawl with bi-lateral breathing and breaststroke, sidestroke and backstroke and swim 50 yards butterfly. They are introduced to the inverted breaststroke, trudgen crawl and over arm sidestroke and continue to refine all previous skills. Wed 6:15 pm Fri 6:15 pm COMPETITIVE SWIMMING Roxbury Stingrays Swim Team The Roxbury YMCA Stingrays provides practice for the serious competitive swimmer. Practice includes intense conditioning, stroke work, starts and turns, finishing and dry land. Must be at least American Red Cross Level 5, or YMCA Flying Fish Level. Register Today! Sat 10:00-11:00 am Ages 6-8 Sat 11:00 am-noon Ages 9-12 Youth Flag Football Ages 6-12 Learn the basic fundamentals including how to grip, throw and catch a football. Drills focus on pass routes and agility techniques. Sun Noon-1:00 pm Youth Soccer Ages 6+ This next step to soccer will build on skills and include end of session scrimmage. 5 YOUTH PROGRAMS continued Kids Conditioning Club Ages 9+ Children will partake in strength training to prepare and enhance their agility and ability for fall and winter sports. This class will use a variety of techniques such as calisthenics and agility work. Youth learn about the importance of eating right and staying active through 30 minutes of nutritional education and one-hour of physical activity. TBA Roxbury YMCA Karate Ages 5-16 Students learn Karate as a complete discipline, focusing on spirit, mind and body. Karate teaches physical defense and emphasizes high personal standards and respect for others. We offer youth karate as well as adult karate. Class meets twice per week. Thu 7:00-7:45 pm Rugby Rugby is played in over 120 countries, is the fastest growing sport across America, and the newest Olympic sport. Rugby combines the principles of soccer and football. Rookie Rugby is played with flags, is co-ed and focuses on introducing basic skills and improving physical fitness while having fun. Imagination, expressiveness and the joy of movement are the focus. Through a variety of activities, participants embark on numerous adventures and cultivate their critical thinking skills. Tue 4:30-6:00 pm Teen Advisory Group (T.A.G) Through participation on this leadership council, teens work in conjunction with Y staff to plan events and implement youthgenerated recommendations. Thu 5:30-7:30 pm Teen Nights Participate in a variety of structured activities and supervised free-play in a safe environment with positive role models. Fri 7:30 pm-12:00 am Young Women s and Men s Groups With the support of positive adult advisors, teens have a safe space to discuss issues important to them, including coping techniques for peer pressure, strengthening time management skills, healthy social etiquette, pregnancy and STD prevention as well as college/career readiness. Youth and Government Youth and Government uses the YMCA core values to teach teens in grades 9 to 12 how they can participate in the democratic process. Participants make friends, learn how they can make a difference and acquire skills to utilize in the future: Public speaking/communications Greater understanding of democratic process Enhanced leadership skills Application of moral and ethical values to life decisions All teens must have a membership. 6 PARTIES & RENTALS Splash Parties Enjoy 60 minutes of pool time with 90 minutes of celebration. Party includes pool toys, lifeguard, party room and coordinator. Party size is limited to 12 guests unless you have written prior approval. Depending on age group and swim ability of the children, parents are required to accompany children in the pool. Party size above 12 requires another lifeguard at additional cost of $25\hr. Sat only 5:00-6:00 pm F/Y: $150 N: $200 CHILD CARE After School Programs Kindergarten-Grade 8 Parents love YMCA After School, our family-centered program that nurtures the whole child by inspiring academic success, healthy movement and social and emotional development. Our staff of caring, trained educators are role models who lead activities that promote cooperation and character development. Parents can be productive at work knowing their children are in a safe and stimulating after school environment. Swimmers also participate in competitions and should be able to swim 2 lengths of the pool in less than 3 minutes. It is geared toward increasing cardiovascular output and muscle tone. Through exercising in the water you can condition your body and heart. North Woods and Pleasant Valley Camps YMCA of Greater Boston s North Woods Camp for Boys and Pleasant Valley Camp for Girls bring children from all over the world together for fun and adventure. With activities like zip lining, kayaking, sports, games and nature hikes, kids jump out of their bunks ready for action every day. Sandy Island Family Camp Vacation for a week with your family. Sandy Island offers lakefront cabins, organized family activities, fishing, boating, swimming and so much more! ACHIEVERS The Achievers Pathways program prepares and motivates high school students for college and career. Our Junior Pathways program takes place in the spring and preps high school juniors for the SAT. INTERNATIONAL LEARNING CENTER (ILC) The ILC offers low-cost adult English (ESOL) classes for all levels from beginner to advanced, including an Advanced Conversation and Pronunciation class for working adults and international students.
