Knox-Lincoln Extension Offers From Soil to Garden to Plate workshop Waldoboro, ME University of Maine Cooperative Extension will once again offer a workshop for teachers, youth development professionals and adults interested in gardening with youth. The workshop From Soil to Garden to Plate: Tools to Start a Youth Gardening and Food Education Program will be held on Saturday, February 27, 2010 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. at the Knox-Lincoln Extension office, 377 Manktown Rd., Waldoboro. This year, the second portion of the day will be held across the road in the Medomak Valley High School horticulture classroom and greenhouses and will be hosted by Neil Lash, Teacher and Director of the MVHS Heirloom Seed Project. Presentations will include: Exploring Soils with Kids with Taryn Hammer, Americorps VISTA, Maine Ag in the Classroom Activities with Willie Sawyer-Grenier, MAITC Executive Director, The Forks and Trowels of Creating and Maintaining a Garden with Youth with Liz Stanley, Extension Horticulture Program Coordinator, Plants Parts We Eat with Elizabeth Chamberlain, Nutrition Associate, Eat Well Nutrition Ed. Program, A Potpourri of Garden-Related Activities to do with Youth with Ellie Libby, Extension Educator and the Medomak Valley Heirloom Seed Project with Neil Lash, MVHS teacher. There will be a special luncheon presentation by Colleen Jacques and members of the Medomak Middle School Green Thumbs Afterschool Club. Participants will also view the greens being grown and harvested by this club in greenhouse space provided by Neil Lash. The cost of $25 includes a healthy, homemade lunch, a materials packet with activities included to celebrate Maine Nutrition Month in March and a ticket for garden-related door prizes! WALDOBORO LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL/SOFTBALL/T-BALL REGISTRATION Registrations for the 2010 Waldoboro Little League season will take place on Wed (3/17) & Thurs (3/18) from 5:30-7:30pm at the American Legion Hall (Jefferson St) and on Wed (3/17) 5:30-7:30pm at Friendship Village School. Registrations will also be accepted March at the Waldoboro Recreation Department from 8:30-5pm. In addition, parents may register at tryout sessions at the MVHS gym on Sat (3/27) and Sun (3/28) from 3-7pm. REGISTRATION DEADLINE for all levels is March 28. At least one parent or legal guardian must present a state certified copy of the child s birth certificate three proofs of residence. Registration is required even if the child played previously. Registration fee is $25. Additional family members receive $5 discount. Scholarships are available. Players must live within the league boundaries of Waldoboro and Friendship and fall between the designated eligibility birth dates in order to enroll: T-Ball(coed) and Baseball - between 5/1/97 & 4/30/05, Softball - between 1/1/97 & 12/31/03. Divisions of play include: T-Ball (5&6 coed), Minor League (Coach & Player Pitch) Softball & Baseball (7-8), Major League Softball & Baseball (9-12). TRYOUTS - To be selected to a Major League Team, all "new" players (ages 9-12) MUST attend at least one tryout/evaluation session. Players on the LIONS, COUGARS, WILDCATS, PANTHERS, BEARS, TIGERS, FILLIES, BOBTAILS or DIAMONDBACKS in 2009 need to register, but not tryout. This year s evaluations will be held in the Medomak Valley High School Gym as follows: Girls Softball - 3/27 (5-7pm) & 3/28 MVHS. Boys Baseball - 3/27 (3-5pm) & 3/28 MVHS. For more information call Kyle the Waldoboro Recreation Department at or League President Eric Hunt at Waldoboro Rec offers Summer Swim Lessons Swimming Lessons for participants ages (4) and up (younger if accompanied in pool) will held on Mondays & Tuesdays from March 22nd to April 16th at the Waldoboro Fitness Center in the following categories: (Level 1 - Introduction to Water Skills, Level 2 - Fundamental Aquatic Skills, Level 3 - Stroke Development and Level 4 - Stroke Improvement - Time slots (beginning at 4:00pm) will be assigned once all registrations are received. This is a 4-week program with (2) 30-minute lessons per week with a Red Cross certified instructor. Space is limited to 10 students per session. Cost of the program is $35 for Waldoboro residents and $45 for non-residents. We are looking to see what the interest would be from towns in S.A.D. 40 in the hopes of having enough kids to participate. We would also be looking for coaches or committed parents that would be willing to help out with teams as well. Currently games will be held at different locations such as Georges Valley and Rockland, but we may be able to add Medomak Valley if we get enough interest! Beekeeping for Beginners A to Z with Jean and Dick Vose Learn from experienced beekeepers about the basics of beekeeping to get you started with this fascinating hobby! This class is held at the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Office, 377 Manktown Road, Waldoboro. End of Life Care Come and get all your questions answered by a panel of local health care professionals, a funeral director, a minister and an attorney. Learn about all the components of end of life care in a relaxed environment. Begins Tuesday, March 9 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. for 3 weeks. Fee: $25. Room 29 at MVHS. Working with your Woodlot with the Small Woodlot Owners Association of Maine Topics to be covered include forest stewardship and management techniques, wildlife management, tree identification, forest health, harvesting, legal aspects of forest ownership and more bring your questions! Begins Tuesday, March 9 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for 6 weeks. Fee: $30. Room 28 at MVHS. Chair Caning with Bernard Zike Get that chair from your attic or cellar and prepare to be transform it! Techniques covered include caning (natural rush), splint seat, shaker tape, porch rockers and wicker repair. Begins Wednesday, March 10 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for 5 weeks. Fee: $35. Materials fee payable to instructor based on your project needs. Room 35 at MVHS. GED Class Session 2 with Lori Taylor GED classes offer intake, assessment, practice testing and tutoring for the GED tests. This is an individualized program based on student goals and abilities. Begins Wednesday, March 10 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. but you may start attending any Wednesday. Fee: FREE.
