1 Great Bedwyn CE Primary School Issue 6 Dear Parents, Pip - Class 2 I hope you enjoy reading the latest round up of news from across all the classes: it always amazes me how many activities go on across the term no wonder pupils and staff are looking forward to the Easter break! A high point for me this term was taking part as a judge in our very own version of The Voice. I enjoyed several lunchtimes hitting my imaginary button and spinning round in my chair to reveal the superstar singers behind the voices! A big thank you to Mrs Bengtsson for organising this fun event and well done to everybody who took part. The Easter holidays are often used as a time to get various jobs done: please can you make sure that children return to school with the correct uniform and appropriate shoes in particular. We have noticed there are a number of trainers being worn as school shoes. Finally, a reminder that our Easter Service will take place in St Mary s Church at 2.15pm on Friday 7th April. We look forward to seeing many of you there. Please be thoughtful of others if you choose to park in the village on Friday afternoon, especially of the residents of Church Street and the need for emergency vehicles to safely negotiate the roads. There will be a retiring collection on behalf of St Mary s Church roof fund. 2 Dates for April Friday 7th Easter service in Church Last day of Term 4 Monday 10th April - Friday 21st April EASTER HOLIDAYS Monday 24th Back to school: First day of Term 5 Thursday 27th Maths Acceleration day St John s: some of Year 6 Reception class This term we have journeyed into space, learning about gravity and the planets in our solar system. We have written letters to Tim Peake asking about what it is like to be an astronaut. Amy shared her space food...the strawberries were very crunchy! In preparation to be space cadets we are running around the school grounds improving our fitness. Recently we have learnt about diurnal and nocturnal animals, writing lots of interesting facts in our booklets. Class One Year 1 have been living Life in the Extreme, continuing to learn more about Captain Scott and his expedition. We have also considered the lives of others who struggle on a daily basis to access clean drinking water. Oscar has since been busy raising money at home by selling chocolate coins, in order to help others! A lovely lady came in to teach us about road safety and we have also been doing some cooking. We have made pancakes, stir fry, soup, fruit kebabs and smoothies. A huge thank you goes to Mrs Randall for coming in to help! Class Two May Monday 1st MAY DAY HOLIDAY Class Two have been making Easter Gardens. We have been looing at how Christians celebrate Easter as it is a time of new life. Monday 8th - Thursday 11th SATS week Year 6 We have also been studying the Great Fire of London and writing our own diaries in the style of Samuel Pepys. I woke up early and there was flames outside my window. So I went out to try and help put it out. It just got worse. I feel very very scared because the fire was spreading very quickly. The fire set the whole city screaming and running for help. I said to my father, Will the fire ever stop? Isla, Class Two 2

We've done lots of learning about our local environment and the children particularly enjoyed finding out about how Great Bedwyn has changed over time. Did you know it used to be called Great Bedwin? It's also been exciting having two class members in The Voice semi finals. Well done Saffron and Alice. A personal highlight of teaching is always seeing the children dress up and Red Nose Day was no exception. Class Five On Thursday 30th March, Year 5 were getting really excited about our sale to help the elephants that was being held in the hall that afternoon. Georgina I came to school revved up and ready to save the elephants! Theo Class Four On the 30th of March Class 4 had a Victorian day. First we came in and saw everyone's amazing outfits. We started by copying some Victorian handwriting. Then we chanted our times tables and if you got them wrong we pretended to wear the dunce's hat and put our faces to the wall! Later we went outside for a Victorian drill. It was very boring compared with the P.E we do today. After that we looked at a Victorian school time table and made our own. Isabella H, Class 4 Monday 12th - Friday 16th British Values Art week Thurs 22nd - Fri 23rd Oxenwood: Year 4 Elly and I were paired up and asked to create a fun game where you had to pick a name out of a box..whoever guessed the correct name was going to win an adorable, cuddly elephant! Guy I had to cut out elephant ears with William.the classroom was not very tidy so we went outside on the benches! Oliver LB 3

Saturday 24th Mini marathon: Durrington July Issue 6 Monday 3rd School nurse: Year 6 Monday 17th Millennium Choir concert Thursday 20th Leavers service: St Mary s Church Last day of Term 6 Friday 21st TD day Class Five (cont.) Everybody was putting in their time and effort, trying to get the jobs done to raise enough money to help the baby elephants and try to adopt one. Matthew Suddenly the time had come, we all walked down to the hall to do the final touches. Ava Claire Perry came and listened to our presentation about the killing of elephants and how we want to stop it Olivia W It was time for the sale, Claire Perry was there, everybody was there it was a huge success Ollie The sale started with Claire Perry cutting the ribbon Phoebe and I got to cut it with her, it was amazing! Olivia P All the kids came running into the stalls. There were so many children at our stall, I had no time to talk to Eve and Liv! Phoebe C Our stall was really crowded we nearly sold out Albert We were all amazed at how well the sale had gone, some of us did a little victory dance! Eve It was a really fun day, I will never forget it. Tallulah Thank you to everyone who supported the sale. Just over 1,500 has been raised which is an amazing total and a great boost to Kids Tusk Force UK Class Six Year 6 have had an action packed term, starting the New Year with a trip to the 02 in London to perform as part of a 7000 strong choir of Young Voices. The children had an incredible time and thoroughly enjoyed being part of such a unique experience. Singing medleys of old and new songs, complete with actions and complimented by a full orchestra and dancers they bopped and sang their way through the show! A squad of year 6 pupils competed in a football tournament against Ramsbury, Aldbourne and Preshute. The team performed well and should excellent team work and team spirit. A team of children also participated in a hockey tournament, again showing excellent teamwork and co-ordination. Two teams participated in a tag rugby tournament, finishing a respectable 3 rd and 6 th out of 20+ teams. The whole class were invited to Marlborough College to participate in a Chemistry workshop about fragrance. There were explosions, colour-changing chemicals and many unusual smells wafting through the auditorium! As part of the Rural Arts in Wiltshire, the Door Ajar company provided a workshop to the year 6 pupils, where they created soundscapes to demonstrate mood using the voices, bodies and simple percussion. Lastly, the term ended with a Sixties Day, where the children came in sixties fancy dress, cooked vegetable curry and naan bread (a dish that rose to popularity in the period), sang several famous sixties songs and choreographed with traditional moves. Groovy Baby yeah! 4

5 Fundamentals Festival 5th April On Wednesday this week, Great Bedwyn School hosted the Year 3 and 4 Fundamentals Festival. Teams took part from Ramsbury, Aldbourne and Preshute. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and with over 50 children taking part, a very lively one too. Music News: The Voice This term 62 of our pupils took part in the first round of The Voice auditions. Many of our contestants bravely sang a song of their choice and Mrs Bengtsson had a very difficult job to knock out some of the contestants to go forward into round two. In round two, 18 pupils performed in the Blinds in front of our judges led by Mrs Will.i.am(s), Mrs Popperwell and Mrs Carlisle. Four went through to the quarter final which was held in sharing assembly in front of the whole school. There could only be one winner but we are very proud of all the singers for taking part. Congratulations to Lucy and Daisy for singing A Whole New World so beautifully and winning The Voice. I was in the Voice because I knew that I was not as confident as I should be with my voice. It has made me so much better than I was before. I m very glad I did the Voice, I will never forget it. Anna, Class 6 The Great Bedwyn School team came in first place overall: congratulations to them and well done to the Year 6 sports ambassadors for helping out Mr Mellor throughout the afternoon. % Attendance % Our Year 5 troupe excelled at the Marlborough Dance Festival in an imaginatively choreographed dance to the iconic 80 s hit FAME! The team had been rehearsing enthusiastically all term and on the day they executed two fabulous performances. Well done to everyone who took part. Dance Festival The percentage attendance for the whole school (up to 5th April ) currently stands at 96.28% This is above the 96% we aim for, so well done everybody. Young Photographer of the year The Newbury Weekly News would like to invite any Year 5 or 6 pupils to enter this competition. The theme is My Town and they are looking for photographs which illustrate how the children see their village or town. All entries need to be in by April 30th.
