1 Cedarwood Preparatory 25 June 2014 Weekly Newsletter From the Headmistress Dear Parents Here we are, almost at the end of June, and when we return after half term, it will be July! Just a reminder that school will close at the normal time this Friday, and reopen on Monday 7th July when we will be welcoming a new face in the front office. Dawn Beckwith (known as DJ) joins us to assist Rachel with admin and reception, and we look forward to getting to know her and welcoming her to the Cedarwood family. The art auction and exhibition on 10 July (6pm) promises to be a fantastic event. The PTA, together with Mrs Pops, have been hard at work to ensure that a wonderful evening is in store for us. The art items to be auctioned are absolutely magnificent and there will be plenty of your child s artwork on exhibit as well, so please come along and support the PTA. Please note that this function is not suitable for children. The Foundation phase will be hosting Special People s Day on Friday morning. This is an opportunity for the children to introduce their special school, Cedarwood, to some of the special people in their lives. We look forward to welcoming grannies, grandpa s, family and friends! We wish Dr Kotze and the College staff, a restful break as they close on Friday for their Winter holiday. The College will re-open on Tuesday 22 July. You can look forward to a less congested car park for a while! God Bless Jayne Eurelle Life is the art of drawing without an eraser - John W. 3 Mini-Cricket Cedarwood Preparatory Weekly Newsletter 25 June 2014 From the Sports Desk This is a report on the sporting activities that we participated in during the past week. Even though we were on a bye, we managed to organise a netball match with Belavista on Thursday. We played three teams and our Under 11 team won their match by two goals to nil. The other two teams played very well and were unlucky not to win their matches. On Saturday, we played in the Jabulani Tournament at Summit College. We had four teams, two for netball and two for soccer. All teams played five matches. The Under 11 netball team won one match, drew one and lost two. The under 13 teams both drew two matches, and lost the rest. The Under 11 soccer team was on the verge of qualifying for the quarter finals. They came third in their group with five points. On Sunday, our horse riders went and represented the school at the Kyalami Equestrian Park. The parade that they mounted was magnificent and our riders represented us with pride. Courtney Fabry, Karl Weissenberger, Connor Stevenson, Cameron North and Tyrone Simpson all participated in the parade and did the school very proud. We would like say thank you and well done to every athlete for representing the school with pride. This week, we will travel to Orion College for a soccer match on Wednesday and on Thursday for a touch rugby match. We wish all those that will participate in the matches all the best of luck. Oliver Ngwenya ASSEMBLY NEWS Thank you to 6A for their lovely assembly on 20 Things to Remember. Our next assembly, on the 7th July, will be presented by 5B. It is that time of year when people are starting to sort out their gardens, splitting bulbs and pruning plants in preparation for the much awaited spring. 7 Mini-Cricket Cedarwood Preparatory Weekly Newsletter 25 June 2014 Reminders School Feels Please note that the beneficiary reference on all school fees payments needs to be changed to child s name and Surname and not the account codes. Fees for July statements will be distributed this week and are due on the 1st July. Interest will be charged on all overdue accounts. The Inspirational Da Vinci The Genius Exhibition For a truly inspiring family day out during the school holidays, head straight to the internationally acclaimed Da Vinci The Genius exhibition at The Amazing Place in Woodmead, Sandton. Da Vinci The Genius is one of those rare gems: an event that entertains and inspires you AND the kids in equal measures! Children are particularly mesmerised by the mirror room and the life-size machine inventions that you can actually yank and crank. To think that Leonardo invented the first concepts of a car, a flying machine, a submarine and even the humble ball bearing (that you ll find in every modern-day skateboard, by the way) over 500 years ago. It s completely awe-inspiring! And then there s the fascinating 25 Secrets of the Mona Lisa and the only 360-degree exact replica of this elusive painting ever made. Not to mention intriguing facsimiles of Leonardo s famous codices (notebooks) which you can scroll through on large touch screens. No wonder over 4 million people have flocked to experience this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity all over the world. And now that we Gautengers finally have the chance to enjoy an international exhibition of this calibre, we should not let this rare opportunity pass us by. But hurry, Da Vinci The Genius closes on 27 July, having just been extended to meet demand. Visit for more info and tickets.
