1 District 19A Monthly Newsletter Jan & Feb 2016 Issue 5 The Pacific Dogwood - Provincial flower of British Columbia ~ Visitations, One Successful District Fundraisers, Two `New` Clubs to be Installed and an Entertaining Council of Governors Meeting ~ Started with a Bang! - Dear fellow Lions, Lionesses & Leos in District 19A: A number of our Clubs completed successful Christmas Tree & Chip-up Fundraising projects in early January and I managed to visit most operations. Zone A-1 also held a well attended 2 nd Zone Meeting and as I continue to visit all our Clubs I was also happily handed cheques towards our District Fundraising project for our VGH & UBC Hospitals Eye Care Centre for the purchase of a Pure Point Laser Retinopexy System. Our aim was to collect somewhere between $30,000 and $40,000; may I happily inform you that over $37,000 has now been collected LEADERS District Governor Eric Keller Ambleside Tiddlycove Lions Club 1st Vice District Governor Simon Yau Vancouver Broadway Lions Cub 2nd Vice District Governor Grace Hwo Vancouver East Lions Club Immediate Past District Governor Jimmy Ho Vancouver Metropolitan Lions Club Cabinet Secretary/Treasurer Clara Chow Vancouver Diamond Lions Club ZC Patricia Tseng (A1) Vancouver Pacific New Century Lions Club ZC George Sim (A2) Ambleside Tiddlycove Lions Club ZC Dave Herd, PDG (A3) Granisle Lions Club ZC Rodney Proskiw (A4) Prince Rupert Lions Club ZC Bob Regnerus (A6) Sunshine Coast Lions Club Alex Wong (A7) Vancouver Diamond Lions Club Lois Brodie (A9) Burnaby Lougheed Lions Club From Right to Left: Dr. Maberley, DG Eric Keller, Function Chairperson PDG Shella Keung and VGH/UBC Foundation Rep Kevin Truong Bulletin Editor PZC Angela Lam
2 Members from the Vancouver Chinatown Lions Club at the District Project Fundraising Event Together with an LCIF Grant our Eye Care Centre can indeed obtain this excellent machine for the benefit of many, many patients, especially our Children. I must congratulate our District Project Chair, Shella Keung for her endless enthusiasm and energy together with many other Lions, phoning Clubs, making sure our Fundraiser Banquet was fully subscribed. And it was! 245 Lions, VIPs, Guests & Sponsors filled the Continental Restaurant and almost 40 Clubs participated. It was wonderful to describe this Eye Care Project as I travelled all over our District and many Clubs donated some in modest amounts, others generously and a few very generously. PZC Gary Ferris accepting an appreciation plaque on behalf of top sponsor club, Ambleside Tiddlycove Please allow me to mention my home Club, those crazy Tiddlycove Guys, who took a major Sponsor position of $10,000 and filled a table. Well, Helen Keller who challenged our Lions to be: Knights of the Blind in a Crusade against Darkness would surely be proud and as my name is Eric Entertainment at the District Fundraiser was provided free of charge by Lioness Samantha Siu of the Vancouver Chinatown Lioness Club Keller, of course we could only succeed! Please peruse Dr. Maberley s letter UBC Head of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences. The official DG visitations have reached 49 Clubs. The Chinatown Lioness Club is always a fun Club to join at the Kirin Restaurant and my meeting with our youthful Vancouver Galaxy Lions in the private dining room at the Salt Building in the Olympic Village was most enjoyable. Our Burrard Club in the renewed Bessborough Armoury Captains Quarters always provides many prizes and my luncheon meeting with Yaletown Lions at the Provence Restaurant was very well attended and a 2
3 nice cheque donated to our Eye Care project. Vancouver Templeton NC listened intently to my presentation at the Campbell Ave Clubhouse and kindly presented Katrina a lovely bouquet of tulips. Vancouver Cathay s visit coincided with their New Year s Celebration Dinner and over 50 joined in. Thanks for your Club shirt, Pres. Elaine and she received a Centennial Club Organization Certificate + a Guiding Lion Medal. Well done! I must not forget our Arbutus Club which received a *New Club Sponsor* badge for their assistance in the formation of our new Vancouver Northern Star Club. And talking of new Clubs: Vancouver Northern Star Lions shall be inducted and installed on March 1 st and our Sunshine Lions on March 4 th. Welcome Ladies & Gentlemen to District 19A and Lions International!! Official visitation to Vancouver Burrard Lions Club Now the other good news April 29 & 30 th : Our Spring Conference Chair, PDG Cecil, has been instrumental in keeping our Conference costs and accommodation package to a minimum. Would you believe the entire registration, fun night, lunch & banquet is offered at $ And the refurbished rooms at our West End Empire Landmark Hotel can be reserved for $75 & $85 (+ taxes) Canadian. Outstanding certainly the best value in all of MD19 and I have checked all the other Conferences. So please come and join us together with many MD19 Lions, Leos, Guests & VIPs. Ambleside is handling the Friday Fun Night and those who joined in our Shella-Price-is-Right event in 2013 shall remember how successful that was. This Fun night shall have a similar flavour with lots of prizes. On February 19 & 20 th I ventured to Vancouver, WA (just across from Portland, OR) to attend our 2 nd Council of Governors meeting together with VDG Simon, PCC Polly & PDG Shella. It seemed 3
4 a bit strange to leave early in the morning from Vancouver, drive 6.5 hours only to arrive in Vancouver! And the traffic along the Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia corridor can be quite brutal. Nevertheless, seeing all the District Governors again and many PDGs and Lions International members was great. Each of us was allowed 3 to 5 minutes to deliver a State of the District message highlighting progress and success stories I concentrated on our just completed Fundraiser and my Yes We Can travels all over Western B.C. There can be no doubt but that our District 19A is one of the most complicated geographic areas to visit with all our many Clubs. On our way back four of us DGs joined in the Burlington Lions annual Roast Beef dinner just south of Bellingham which was excellent and more than 200 Lions filled the Eagles Hall. I do appreciate the International aspects in our Lions Organization and the many friends you make, maintain and meet again and again. That *Fellowship* is most rewarding!! Yours in Service & Fellowship, Eric R. Keller. * 1250 * - Yes, we Can! District Governor Monopoly Fundraiser benefitting the Canadian Cancer Society, co-hosted by three clubs, the Vancouver Chinatown Lions Club, the Vancouver Chinatown New Century Lions Club and the Vancouver Legacy Lions Club on January 31, 2016 at the Terminal City Club. 6 Message from President Jitsuhiro..Our forefathers made a wise choice in 1968 to name our grant-making arm Lions Clubs International Foundation. This entity is indeed the main support of what Lions do. It embodies our fundamental principles. It s our sturdy, reliable base for Lions service. Lions clubs could conceivably function without LCIF, but the world would be much less pleasant place.. LCIF is a brilliant, remarkably effective way for Lions to multiply our impact. It s the way we pool our resources and channel our good will. It s our tool for clubs to serve on a much larger scale than they could do on their own. Please continue to generously fund LCIF, as Lions have done for nearly half a century. Help Lions help others through LCIF. ~Excerpt from LCI website on President s Message:T Greetings Lions I would like to draw your attention to an article in the recent Lions Magazine, February 2016, page 11. The magazine is reminding us of the integrity of the Lions Clubs International Foundation, your foundation. The article says that For the fourth consecutive year, Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator, recently awarded LCIF four stars, the highest ranking a charity can receive. This is great news for us. It confirms what we already know. LCIF is a great way to help people around the world and at home when we apply for grants. Please ask your club to donate to LCIF. I realize that we only have so many funds to donate, but please make a donation to LCIF, no matter of the size. Do you remember SightFirst? On the same page, page 11, there is an article that reports that LCIF is still working on elimination of River Blindness. The article says that Mexico eliminates River blindness. Our donated dollars were partly responsible for that. LCIF at work. Marilyn Martin District 19A LCIF Coordinator Marilyn.martin@telus.net
