4 Meet the Head Coach Head Coach Scott Virgulak Scott Virgulak begins his eighth year as Rhode Island College's head baseball coach. He owns a (.478) career record as the Anchormen's skipper. In 2016, the Anchormen finished the season with a record and placed eighth in the Little East Conference. In 2015, RIC bounced back from a difficult season by posting a overall record and a 9-5 (third place) mark in the Little East Conference. Virgulak saw the program's first player taken in the Major League Amateur Baseball Draft in over 30 years when junior All-American catcher Matt Foley was selected by the Miami Marlins. Virgulak led RIC to a school record for wins in 2012 as the Anchormen went overall and 9-5 (third place) in the Little East. It was the seventh consecutive campaign the Anchormen won 20 or more contests. He led RIC to its second Little East Conference Tournament Championship (2005) in 2011, becoming the first sixth seed in LEC history to win the league's postseason tourney. The Anchormen finished the campaign with a overall record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, winning its first round game vs. MIT-the first NCAA win for the program in 31 years. He guided the Anchormen to a overall record and an 8-6 (third place tie) in the Little East Conference in his first season at the helm in He spent as an assistant coach under previous RIC boss Jay Grenier. During his time as an assistant, he primarily worked with the team's position players, while serving as the squad's third base coach during games. Off the field, he was instrumental in working with the team's recruiting efforts. Virgulak was an assistant coach with the Newport Gulls of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) from The Gulls captured the 2009 NECBL Championship, with Virgulak serving as the head coach during the deciding game in the playoffs. Virgulak was an assistant coach for the 2009 NECBL All-Star squad that played Team USA. He also was an assistant coach during the 2004, '05 and '06 NECBL midsummer classics. Prior to joining the Gulls staff, Virgulak was an assistant coach with the North Adams Steeplecats and was promoted to head coach during the 2005 season, leading the club to its first and only playoff series victory. He played two seasons of baseball at RIC in 2000 and The North Kingstown, Rhode Island native played in 59 games, starting 58 of the them. He posted a.286 career batting average with 43 runs, 61 hits, 33 RBI, 16 doubles, five home runs, 92 total bases, 33 walks and one stolen base. He recorded a.432 slugging percentage, a.382 on-base percentage and a.938 fielding percentage for his career. As a junior in 2000, Virgulak had an outstanding season and was named First Team All-Little East Conference at third base. He batted.377 with 24 runs, 43 hits, 16 RBI, ten doubles and two home runs. Prior to coming to RIC, Virgulak played two seasons at the Community College of Rhode Island. In addition to his coaching duties, Virgulak works at Potowomout Golf Club. He earned his bachelor s degree in management from Rhode Island College in Virgulak resides in Charlestown, Rhode Island with his wife Donna and children: Alyssa (19), Zachary (14) and Kendall (4). 4
5 Meet the Assistant Coaches Assistant Coach Harrison Barlow Harrison Barlow begins his first season as an assistant baseball coach at Rhode Island College. Barlow assists Head Baseball Coach Scott Virgulak and Assistant Coach Joe Vigeant with all facets of the program. Harrison is a great addition to our coaching staff and I am real excited about him now being a part of RIC Baseball, said Virgulak. He made an immediate impact with us in the fall. His knowledge and passion for the game, and pride in the talent that comes out of Rhode Island, is a big addition to the RIC Baseball family. Barlow comes to RIC after spending last season as an assistant coach at Salve Regina. He helped lead Salve Regina to the program s first Commonwealth Coast Conference championship in 10 years. He also spent the last two summers on the coaching staff for the Ocean State Waves of the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL). "I am incredibly excited about the opportunity to continue my coaching career in my home state of Rhode Island and join the Rhode Island College Baseball community, Barlow said. I have had many positive influences from coaches throughout my life and realize the lasting impact that those have had on me. I look forward to working with a great group of young men and hopefully being able to have that same lasting positive influence on them both on and off the field. An accomplished player at the high school and collegiate level, Barlow was the 2011 Gatorade Player of the Year at South Kingstown High School and was part of a nationally-ranked recruiting class at the University of Rhode Island. Barlow is a 2015 graduate from URI with a bachelor s degree in both criminology and biology. He is single and resides in Narragansett. Assistant Coach Joe Vigeant Joe Vigeant begins his third season as an assistant baseball coach at Rhode Island College. He assists Head Coach Scott Virgulak with all phases of the RIC baseball program including recruiting, scouting, administering practice and game coaching. Vigeant joins the Anchorman baseball staff after serving as an assistant coach at the Community College of Rhode Island from In addition to his coaching duties, Vigeant is an associate scout for the Miami Marlins. He served as a police officer and a juvenile detective in the town of Coventry for 23 years. He is currently a Rhode Island College Campus Police officer. Vigeant earned his bachelor's degree in business management from Rhode Island College in He starred on the diamond as an outfielder from RIC from Vigeant played in 70 games and owned a.376 career batting average. He totaled 202 career at-bats, 32 runs scored, 76 hits, 49 RBI, seven doubles, two triples, four home runs and nine stolen bases. As a senior in 1986, he played in 30 games, batting.402 with 11 runs scored, 33 hits, 28 RBI, three doubles, one triple, two home runs and nine steals. As a junior in 1985, Vigeant batted.419 in 24 games with 15 runs scored, 36 hits, 20 RBI, three doubles, a triple and two homers. He is also a 1991 graduate of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy and earned an additional bachelor's degree in administration of justice from Roger Williams in Vigeant resides in Johnston and has three children. 5
