T-2nd/3.0 Attendance Avg./Rank... 6,445/1st Go Fourth and Surrender: The RoughRiders dropped their second straight matinee contest with Midland yesterday, losing 8-4 with the bulk of the damage being done in a six-run RockHounds fourth inning. Midland tallied two against Kevin Pucetas in the second inning and then blew the game open two frames later. The Hounds sent 12 men to the plate and scored six times on seven hits (a seasonmost allowed in one inning by Frisco) and two walks to build an 8-0 lead. The Riders scored their only runs on a pair of Teodoro Martinez homers when the game was already out of hand. The loss dropped Frisco to three games back of first place Corpus Christi in the division. Café Latte: Wednesday s game turned into a career day for Teodoro Martinez, who drove in all of the RoughRiders runs. Café went 4 for 4, tying a career-best in hits, with two home runs and four runs batted in. The multi-homer game was the first of his career, as was the four-rbi day. His three-run home run in the seventh inning got the Riders on the scoreboard and his solo shot in the ninth got the deficit to four. Martinez hit his first home run of the season on Friday, May 10 in Corpus Christi and all of a sudden is fourth on Frisco in batting average (.263). The diminutive Venezuelan started the season 1 for 20 (.050) but in his last 18 games is hitting.333 (20 for 60), collecting at least one hit in all but four of those contests. Ten for Tommy: With his eighth inning single in yesterday s ballgame, Riders catcher Tomas Telis ran his hitting streak to ten games. The streak is the longest by a Frisco player this season (Jared Hoying and Odubel Herrera previously had nine-game streaks) and the longest current streak in the Texas League. During the streak, Telis is batting.375 (15 for 40) and has raised his season batting average from.204 to.281. Second half team: As the RockHounds showed on Wednesday, teams have been able to damage the Riders early in games. This season, Frisco is being outscored in the first four innings of games, yielding at least 20 runs in each frame. The end of games, however, is where the RoughRiders flex their muscles. The team is outscoring its opposition from the fifth inning on. Get on my back, boys: Brett Nicholas has been carrying the load lately for the RoughRiders offense. Over the last four games, Nicholas has gone 6 for 12 with a double, three home runs, nine RBI, two walks and two hit-by-pitches. Nicholas long ball on Tuesday was his fifth seven games and his tenth this season, establishing a new career-high for home runs in a season (he previously hit eight last year for Myrtle Beach). Nicholas is ninth in the Texas League in batting (.291), tied for second home runs, first in RBI (33), fourth in slugging percentage (.582), third in extra-base hits (19), fifth in runs scored (23), second in total bases (78) and fifth in AB/HR (13.40). He leads all Rangers farmhands in RBI and is second in homers. On a wider scale, Nicholas is tied for seventh in all of Minor League Baseball in homers and since May 7 is tied for second in the minors in homers (5), tied for sixth in RBI (12) and third in slugging (1.000). 11 o clock cruise: Though he was charged with his first loss of the season, Neil Ramirez was certainly the least of Frisco s problems on Tuesday against Midland. The Virginian went a season-long seven innings and allowed three runs on just three hits. He didn't walk a batter and stuck out a career-high 11 batters using all four of his pitches. The performance elevated Ramirez to the top of the Texas League in strikeouts with 55 on the season which ties him for the fourth-most in Minor League Baseball this season. He also leads the TL in lowest batting average against (.152), placing him fifth in the minors. The pen needs more ink: After a spectacular start to the season, the RoughRiders bullpen has begun to falter lately. Entering play on April 27, Frisco s relievers had posted a 1.09 ERA (10 ER/82.2 IP). In the 18 games since, the pen s ERA has been 3.67 (31 ER/76.0 IP) to raise the season ERA to In this period, the team s walk rate has been 4.9/9IP (41 total walks), more than double the 2.4/9IP rate it had been for most of the first month of the season. The bullpen s batting average against was.170 (47 for 277) prior to this stretch but is.218 (57 for 262) over the past 18 games. Overall, the RoughRiders relievers have posted a.192 opposing batting average (104 for 542). Indefensible: The defensive disparity between the RoughRiders and their opponents has been glaring, not only in the number of errors being committed by the opposition but also in the number of unearned runs that Frisco has been able to plate lately. Over the last 21 games, opposing teams have committed 30 errors which have helped the Riders score 24 unearned runs. In this same span, Frisco has committed 12 errors and allowed ten unearned runs. In 2013, Frisco has committed a league-fewest 21 errors and has posted a league-leading.986 fielding percentage. The Riders opponents have committed 41 errors. Fantastic Four: It s easy enough to understand, but the RoughRiders generally win when the offense is performing very well and they generally lose when it doesn't. Frisco is 18-4 when scoring four runs or more in a game (though the squad is just 3-4 in such games since May 5) and just 2-15 when the team tallies three runs or less. In their 20 wins, the Riders are outscoring their opposition 117 to 45 (an average score of 5.9 to 2.3); in their 19 losses, they are being outscored 111 to 43 (5.8 to 2.3). Pimo Time!: Carlos Pimentel turned in another solid outing on Sunday to earn his fourth win of the season. The Dominican righthander allowed just two runs on two hits (one of them a two-run homer by Jiovanni Mier) and two walks over five innings with nine strikeouts. The strikeout figure tied a career-best, which he had previously recorded in his first start of the season. With 51 strikeouts on the season, Pimentel is second in the Texas League and among all Rangers farmhands. He is also fourth in WHIP (1.02), fifth in lowest opposing batting average (.211), third in strikeout rate (11.48/9IP) and tied for third in fewest baserunners/9 IP (9.00). The most impressive stat from Pimentel s start is his 2.4 BB/9 IP ratio, given that it was 5.3 in 2012 and his career rate is 4.0. Today s Opposing Starter: RHP Josh Bowman (2-1, 4.54) makes his eighth start of the season tonight and his first against the Rough- Riders. He got a no-decision his last time out against San Antonio, yielding five runs (one earned) on three hits and four walks in five innings. He previously surrendered seven runs in four frames against Corpus Christi. Bowman is in his second year with the Rock- Hounds after making one start with Midland at the end of last season (5 IP, 7 H, 3 R vs. San Antonio on 8/30). He spent the bulk of 2012 with Advanced-A Stockton, going 6-10 with a 3.62 ERA in 25 starts, striking out 127 and walking 33 in innings. Bowman was drafted by Oakland in the tenth round in 2010 out of the University of Tampa, the same alma mater as former big leaguer Tino Martinez. In three seasons with the Spartans, Bowman went 17-8 with a 3.97 ERA in 42 games (39 starts), striking out 208 in 202 innings. In his junior season at Tampa, he was a second-team All-Sunshine State Conference selection while also earning ABCA/ Rawlings first-team all-south Region and second-team Daktronics all-region accolades. In his freshman year, he went undefeated in 15 starts and he threw a no-hitter against Eckerd College, striking out 11 batters over seven innings. Prior to heading to college, the Athletics drafted him in the 49th round out of Northeast High School in St. Petersburg (the same high school as former big leaguer Jeff D Amico and current Braves general manager Frank Wren), where he was the Pinellas County Pitcher of the Year and on third-team allstate. He was the salutatorian of his high school graduating class and has taken mission trips to West Virginia, Tennessee, Puerto Rico and Mexico. Tampa head coach Joe Urso has called Bowman the hardest working pitcher he has ever coached and a natural leader. RIDERS vs. MIDLAND Hounds Lead Season Series 5-2 5/04 R W 4-2 Straus HR, 4 1st inn.
