It s hard to believe 2018 is behind us now. We have many events planned for the new year. Please check out the 2019 events calendar in this newsletter. I hope you will all try to attend them in support of our club. There is also an updated 2019 ABA events calendar so you can start planning your out-of-town dance excursions. I would like to thank everyone who supported our West Coast for Warmth charity activity. We filled two (2) large boxes with hats, mittens, scarves, socks and gloves for the needy children in the Flint area. They were given to the Whaley Children s Home and the Shelter of Hope. We also collected $50.00 which was given to the Old Newsboys. Thanks to all your donations, the defibrillator has been ordered. We are going to offer a CPR class for anyone who s interested. Please sign up at the registration desk if you would like to get trained/certified in CPR. I hope to offer a class by the middle of January. Now that winter is here, I encourage all members to check your and/or the GLSDC Facebook page every Wednesday around noon during inclement weather to make sure we are having dance that night. Every attempt will be made to communicate a closing to members. January s dance lesson is East Coast Swing taught by Angela Markle. Here s the DJ lineup: Ed, Henry, Joann and Angela. 4 Famous Swing Dancers Dance is a form of therapy it s fabulous for busting stress, as well as having some energetic fun. Swing dancing originated between 1920 and 1940 as an amalgamation of different forms of dance. Swing dancing easily traces to the Charleston, which was a hugely popular dance in the 1920 s. Several dancers became famous because of this dance for their incredibly superb moves and artistic performances. 1. Frankie Manning, The Swing King! In the 1930s, dancing changed. Dances invariably involved two partners, and they included a more closed position. Partners began to sort of break-away from the closed type of dancing, and the Lindy Hop type of dance came into being in the Savoy Ballroom in New York. The dance was lively and matched the rhythms of the then big bands of the time. It used triple steps and steps called airsteps that were invented by Frankie Manning in It got so famous that it featured in many Hollywood movies. Frankie and his partner added a backflip to their routine in an effort to defeat the best dancer then George Snowden. On July 4 th, 1928, a non-stop marathon dance took place. At the end of it all, 4 couples out of the original 80 shared the prize, Snowden and his partner being among them. Frankie is a legend in Swing dancing, with his amazing aerials and flips entertaining and thrilling the crowds. 2. Dean Collins Dean Collins was a superb dancer in the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, Manhattan, from the age of 14, and by the time he was 18 had already received the Dancer of the Year award. He added personal dance moves to the Savoy Style Lindy, now the West Coast Swing. He featured in many movies as a dancer and choreographer. He became famous for his incredibly talented dancing. 3. Whitey s Lindy Hoppers The Whitey s Lindy Hoppers had the crème de la crème of society requesting to have them perform at their parties. Herbert Whitey White handpicked them from the Savoy Ballroom, where they established their talents, as they dominated the dance world with their moves. They became famous through live performances and through movies. They specialized and wowed the world with their daring and captivating dance moves. 4. Fred Astaire The American Film Institute ranked Freddy Astaire as among the top 5 screen legends, and he was best recognized for his uplifting dance moves in the many comedy movies he starred in with his partner, Ginger Rogers. He was featured in many movies and left to start his own studio, The Fred Astaire Dance Studios, but still continued acting. He got numerous awards in his lifetime for his superb dance moves. He was famous for his signature dance routines in the films Belle of New York, The Band Wagon and Royal Wedding. Perhaps his most spectacular performance was with his partner Cyd Charisse in Dancing in the Dark. 5. Ginger Rogers Ginger was an American dancer, actor, director and singer. Together with her partner Fred Astaire, they made an electric dance couple. Fred and Ginger starred in many films together and their dance moves made them among the most spectacular dancing couple in the 1930s. She also won numerous awards for her dancing, which included a combination of ballroom dancing such as the waltz and tap, foxtrot, and jazz dancing. Swing dancing made many dancers famous. The more complex the moves, the better it was. They ended up in many swing dance films for their unique and captivating dancing skills. Swing dancing is still popular today, and the above stars are an inspiration to many, with their moves and talents considered legendary. SwingORama
