I don t see how everyone dresses up with such new and unusual ideas each year we have had spice rack, babies, three blind mice, and many more! How about YOU?

1 Jitterbug Jive Dedicated to the Bop, Shag and Swing Dance Styles Volume 29 Issue 5 October 2017 We will start the month of October with our monthly membership meeting and our monthly birthday party on October 14 th. You guessed it.. No cover charge, no entrance fee, no drink minimum, and we will have FREE cake! I think this party will be our Fall party, with our Halloween party coming up at month end. Yes! We will have a Halloween party on Saturday, October 28 th, in the Lounge. Not only will the Lounge be decorated to the max with ghosts, bats, and table decorations by Donna Becker/Mitchell, but wait until you see the costumes our members come up with! Wow! I don t see how everyone dresses up with such new and unusual ideas each year we have had spice rack, babies, three blind mice, and many more! How about YOU? Anyhow, we always enlist the help of the hotel staff to pick out the top three costumes, and each will receive a nice cash prize - $100 for first place, $75 for second place, and $50 for third place. November party? Humm certainly a birthday party, so just watch for my Thursday , and let me surprise you. We will have our annual Christmas party on December 3 rd. Most of you know about this fantastic party which is virtually free for members. We have this fantastic dress up party to just enjoy ourselves, and the Christmas season. This is the party that gives you back what you paid for in your membership dues! You give us annual dues of $35, and this dance alone costs the club around $45 to put on. This party is for members, but a non-member can attend for $ Please remember that our tickets are nontransferrable. You buy a ticket for $10 and we ll give you back a $5 ticket for a free drink. Then we have a full, all-out buffet for you, and we will have a guest DJ Eddie Richardson, from the Memphis Bop Club. All this in the Crowne Ballroom, on the 10 th floor. There is a small room block for this party just call the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel and ask for the special MCBC rate which is $99, plus tax. Please bring a gift (a sparkling new toy still in the box, or even CASH) for our Toys for Tots program to this Christmas party. The Music City Bop Club has Kathy Fuller buy at least $500 worth of toys, which she enthusiastically does each year scouring the sales all year long. I think she gets at least $1,000 worth of toys! We invite some Marines from the Toys for Tots program for dinner and dancing and they seem to appreciate us as well as we appreciate them. THEN, we have our New Year s Eve party same Crowne Ballroom, open to everyone for the same price of $45 per person price. We have been the host of the combined New Year s Eve party for at least 17 years, and we strive to contain our costs so that we continue to offer a fantastic party at a fair price. We are partnering with our sister club in Nashville the Nashville Dance Club, and we are not out for a profit just somewhere to dance on New Year s Eve. A free Champagne toast at midnight is included, as is a full buffet breakfast after midnight, plus party hats and noise makers. There will be fireworks in Nashville at midnight, and you will have a perfect viewing spot from the top floor of the hotel. We have set a limit of 150 guests for our New Year s Eve Party, and have just a few rooms in a room block at the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel, for $99 per night, plus tax. It is a fantastic party for only $45 per person, whether you are a member of our club or not, but remember - we will only sell 150 tickets for this

2 party. See the flyer in this newsletter, or just look at the information that Kathy sent you it is in there as well Christmas and New Year s Eve party tickets are now for sale! Call Kathy Fuller at (615) , or fill out the application forms that we send to you right after Halloween and send them to us. We will get back as quickly as possible with your tickets. NOTE: We will not be dancing on Saturday, December 2nd because of our Christmas party, or on Saturday, December 23th, so you can rest up, see family and friends, and get ready for New Year s Eve! What else? Well there is ALWAYS a party coming up! On Friday, January 12 th (YES!!) we welcome our ABA friends to the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel with a dance in the Lounge, starting at 7 PM. This Friday dance is sort of a "meet and greet" to see old friends from all over the country, and what a great way to see some really fantastic dancers. Where else but at this ABA meeting can you see dancers from 32 or more ABA member clubs all together and dancing at the same time, and in the same place? NO WHERE. These poor ABA Representatives have to get up Saturday, January 13 th to attend a meeting, while we get ready to dance Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night as well! Of course, we always have a Hospitality Room set up to feed everyone who shows up on Saturday around 6 PM. Last item - We continue to have drink specials and we currently have special pricing from the Millennium Maxwell House Hotel 25% off on all appetizer prices, plus special prices on domestic draft beer, on house wines, and on well drinks See you Saturday night! Randy To our Special Bop-Club Friends, I have been trying to write this letter of thanks for several weeks now. It is difficult to express my thanks to you during my terrible time of grief. I want to let the entire club, both Nashville Dance Clubs and MCBC how much your friendship and love has meant to Harry and me. We looked forward to every week joining friends who had smiles on their faces, whose only wishes were to gather together in happiness for a few hours. Dedicating the Wild Kingdom to us made me proud and also made me cry because I knew it was through your love and grace that you honored us. Harry's death was so sudden that my mind could simply not process and I remained in shock for several months. He was my everything and I simply wanted to die but God had a different plan for me. Dancing was our greatest joy next to having children. We were both planning on retiring this year and enjoy our remaining decades but it didn't turn out that way. I want every member of these clubs to know that you gave us some of the greatest joys of our lives and we cherish every single moment with you and we thank you for being our family because you were much more than friends. Scudder Club Photo Diane Thurston Kathy Fuller Website Sue Kestner East Coast Swing, The Bop The East Coast Swing dance is a social partner dance developed in the 1940 s by dance studios and dance organizations. Moreover, it is categorized under the swing dance umbrella of dance genres. Also, the name was changed to East Coast Swing from Eastern Swing in the 1950 s. Lastly, like all the swing dances, it originated from the Lindy Hop in the 1920 s. Other names for it over the last seven decades include: Eastern Swing (1950 s), Jitterbug, Triple Swing, the Bop, and Rock & Roll. The most enduring name has always been East Coast Swing, which also distinguished it from the burgeoning West Coast Swing dance genre that became popular in the 1960 s. Arthur Murray and Dean Collins were instrumental in its development along with other U.S. dance studios during the 1940 s & 50 s. Some of the changes included eliminating eight count patterns and acrobatics used in Lindy Hop to sell it to the American masses making it is easier than its predecessors, Lindy Hop and Shag. They codified it and created a syllabus to use for dance instruction and for judging panels at competitions. East Coast Swing style varies considerably across dance community s. For instance, it is included in Country Western dance competitions and Ballroom competitions. Also, it is mixed in with Lindy Hoppers and at times is danced in a slot like West Coast Swing. Additionally, all of the swing dances skyrocketed in popularity again during the late nineties and early two-thousands Swing Revival. Sometimes called Neo-Swing, new swing music became popular as well as retro tunes. This new interest in swing dancing was still going strong after a decade and into the 21st century. The East Coast Swing dance became one of the dance genres included in the American Rhythm division in U.S. national ballroom competitions. The National Dance Council of America (N.D.C.A.) oversees the standards used for competition in American Rhythm and American Smooth dance genres, which includes the East Coast Swing (generally triple rhythm).
