President s Remarks Congratulations to all exhibitors who competed in the 2018 Pennsylvania Farm Show. I attended the Farm Show on Friday and was happy to see all of the exhibitors, especially the youth that were there. I was informed that the Ayrshire breed had the highest number of animals that went through the showring that day. My parents were there on Saturday and they told me that there was a class of ten for the judging school. Ken Raney commented, It s not often that you get a class of ten Ayrshires for a judging school. The whole week of Farm Show I believe that the Ayrshire breed was well represented. Something new for our spring convention this year is we are going to be having vendor spots. So, if you have your own business or there is a company that you work for, please contact me for more information. Again this year at the spring convention is our annual calf sale and open calf and heifer show. If you have an animal to consign to the sale, please contact Jason Mowry. Any questions about the heifer show, please contact me. Our spring sale and show is growing every year. I hope to see you all in Shippensburg for the Spring Convention on April 27th-28th. Summer received the NASCO Type & Production Award, and was named the Total Performance winner of the International Ayrshire Show at the World Dairy Expo. Her cow, Mowry Plum -Bottom S Paris, was named Ayrshire Grand Champion & Reserve Supreme Champion. Pattie Maulfair was tapped for Reserve Grand Champion. Lexi Findley had both the Youth Grand and Reserve Grand Champions. Taylor Heeter strapped the Junior Champion, while Katie Shultz & Jill Kopfer exhibited the Reserve Junior Champion. The Findley Family was awarded the Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners. Congratulations to all! Allen Farms Dixon Popcorn, Nominated Jr All-American Fall Calf, owned by Nikayla Peters. Due to the declining number of participants, the PA ABA Board of Directors has decided to discontinue the Ayrshire Futurity Contest at the All-American Dairy Show. Gay Rodgers and her crew are all smiles after a successful show day at the 2018 PA Farm Show. 2

3 The Spring Calf and Heifer Show Continues to Grow Our popular PA Ayrshire Spring Heifer Show is back for 2018! The show is slated to begin one half hour after the end of the PA ABA Spring Sale on Saturday, April 28th. The show is open to youth and adults from Pennsylvania and neighboring states, not just PA ABA members. Calves & heifers purchased in the PA ABA sale will automatically be entered in the show; however, you need to let the show manager know of your intent to participate. *entry form enclosed The Junior Champion lineup at the PA ABA Spring Show. The Courtyard Marriott, located on the Shippensburg University campus, will again be the site of our youth events and dinner meeting on April 27th. A block of rooms has been reserved for the weekend at the special rate of $90.00 per night. To make reservations call , and be sure to mention the PA Ayrshire Breeders Association. You can also make your reservations online. Reservations must be made by April 5, 2018 in order to get the reduced rate. Photo by Barb Rader From Janel Zinn: The Pennsylvania Ayrshire Spring Convention and Sale has added a heifer show, which has had overwhelming support. This year we will be adding vendor spaces to our convention. Spaces will cost $25.00, which includes one 8 foot table and two chairs. Vendor times will be Friday, April 27th starting at 10 AM through Saturday, April 28th at 2 PM. Space reservations are due by April 15th. Our sale has a reputation for offering high quality Ayrshires whether you need that special show calf or top genetics to add to your herd. 5 Ayrshire Youth Contests Hey, Ayrshire Youth! There are several contests for you to take part in at our Pennsylvania ABA Spring meeting on April 27th. Again, this year there will be Dairy Bingo for our younger Jr. members. There will still be the usual Dairy Jeopardy for youth age 12+. Got a creative bone? Enter the PA ABA poster contest. Winners from this contest have the opportunity to showcase their poster at the Ayrshire National Convention. The PA ABA Chain Calf Contest is open to youth members ages 9 to 14. We need young ladies ages 9-15 willing to be Ayrshire Maids. If you re 16 or older, please consider running for Pennsylvania Ayrshire Princess. Do you have a high producing Ayrshire cow? Is she type scored? Enter her in the PA Ayrshire Production Contest or the Ayrshire Cow of the Year Contest. You only need to fill out one entry form for both contests. On the right is 2016 PA Ayrshire Princess Amanda Fisher. Princess Ponderings Hello fellow Ayrshire enthusiasts! It has been an absolute pleasure serving as the Pennsylvania Ayrshire Princess. I have enjoyed having the ability to explain to others why Ayrshires are such an exciting breed. Funny story: During an ice cream social event, I was asked to tell more general dairy cow facts because they felt I was showing too much bias with all the Ayrshire facts I was announcing. I was invited to participate with many different events in my own county and others. I participated in events like the celebrity milking contest at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show, was a judge in a kid s costume float contest, and helped serve ice cream on multiple occasions, just to name a few. I have enjoyed being able to attend other county fairs and assist with their Ayrshire shows. By getting to travel to all of these different shows, in different areas of the state, I was able to see that there is a great quality of Ayrshires state wide. I had the pleasure of meeting and working with so many great people. There was never an event that I attended that I did not enjoy. I always made the most out of every experience. Although I will soon be handing down my title to the next lovely lady, I will always speak well of the Ayrshire Breed, and promote it during every opportunity available! Sincerely, Robin Peters 5
