New Staff Hawk s Nest Drama Scholarships I N S I D E T H I S I S S U E : New Staff 1 and Students Boys & Girls 2 Cross Country Boys & Girls 2 Soccer Welcome back students, parents, and teachers! We have officially begun our school year. This year not only do we have red and white days, but we also have pink days, as they have come to be called, once a month. On pink days the students go to all their classes. These classes are shortened throughout the day so instead of being an hour and a half long, they are only forty-five minutes long so we can fit all eight periods into one day. This allows us to have an advisory period. Which will be used for many purposes, and so far has been used for career research on the Indiana Career Explorer and getting to know each other in a in a smaller group setting. There will be more information about the specifics of the advisory period in future issues of this publication. What else is new, you may ask? We have a foreign exchange student from Spain, and a new shared teacher with the middle school who some of you may know Mrs. Pastrick! We are very excited about the new school year and we want to wish all our students and staff a happy and productive experience! Social Media 2 Hawks Nest 3 Boys & Girls 3 Volleyball Popcorn Festival 4 BPA, Kiner s 4 Corner, & Spell Bowl Drama 5 NHS & Guidance 6 Bienvenida, Elena This year, we have a new exchange student from Spain. Her name is Elena. We asked her some of the differences she s noticed about being in America. One of the biggest differences she said was the way classes are set up here in America. For instance in Spain, the same group of students stay in the same room all day, and the teachers are the ones who move rooms, as opposed to in America, where we do the opposite. She commented how everyone is so much nicer here! Even though she is homesick at times, the experience of being here makes up for it. Elena compares where she lives in Spain to the city of Chicago, so, as you can imagine being in Hebron is very different! We are so glad to have you this year Elena! Welcome Mrs. Pastrick We would like to extend a warm welcome to Mrs. Pastrick, who is teaching a section of Spanish 2 at the high school. She teaches the rest of her day at the middle school, and comes to us from Valparaiso schools. Fun fact: she is married to our own veteran Mr. Pastrick from the middle school! Welcome Mr. Howard We are also pleased to have a new food service director, Mr. Howard. We can t wait to see what delicious concoctions you come up with for our lunches here!

Girls Cross Country The girls cross country team is young, but powerful. Senior Payton Schatz and Junior Natalie Egolf leads the seven freshmen and one sophomore throughout the season. Hebron girls placed 5th overall running against 20 other schools at the Hammond Gavit Invite. Schatz and Egolf medaled for top 20. Schatz, Egolf, Star Rodriguez, Katlyn Cherry, Allison Hano, Alyssa Rokosz, Nikki Schmidt ran in the varsity race at New Prairie Invite. The team pushed through the rainy and muddy course and achieved to place 3rd overall as a team racing against 40 other schools. Schatz, Egolf, and Rodriguez placed in the top 40. Freshmen Skyla Smolen, Hailey Taylor, and Riley McCullough accomplished the New Prairie course also finishing the race strong. The 10 girls will be racing at Culver Invite on September 26th. Conference Race is on Wednesday September 30th at Boone Grove. Come out and support the happiest girls cross country team. They will appreciate it! Boys Cross Country The boys cross country team is beginning to hit their stride as the season moves forward. The team is slowly getting into the swing of things with being 2-2 in conference. Right now, the current consistent top seven varsity team consists of Joe MacNeill, Parker Nuest, Daniel Clemens, Conner Nuest, Corey Wallace, Ty Maldonado, and Vincent Creighton. The JV team consists of Eric Lyons, Alex Lyons, Malachi Lara, Andrew Pavlo, Jeremy Wall, Brandon Nilsen, Scott Crawley, Johnnie Fry, Josh Clemens, and Grant Giacomin. Keep it up, boys. After losing to Boone Grove in penalties, the boys came up with a Boys Soccer win against Bishop Noll, which was one of the toughest teams in their schedule. Sadly, they weren't awake at the 1st half of the game vs. Marquette Catholic which they lost 3-2. They had a victory over KV for the first time in six years that Hebron has played them with a score of 5-0. The boys hope to see you all on Saturday the 19th. First game is at 10:30am, and the second will be announced after the first set of games. The Scores and Assists for this year so far: Name Goals Assists Points Nick Surber Noah Dattilo Tyler Hill Jon Grant Denis Mijatovic Phillip Betts Peyton Doeling Raul Fierro Girls Soccer T H E H A W K S N E W S The 2015 Girls Soccer Team is being lead by seniors Jewel Elam (starting defense), Shelby Keehn and Bailey Michalak (starting midfielders). The team had a great turnout with 6 seniors, 9 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 6 freshmen. At the beginning of the season we lost a beloved player due to injury, Brittany Botts, because of a car accident, but she will be back for her senior year next fall. Even though we lost a player, we also had a player return to field because of injury, Jewel Elam. We quickly made up for Botts absence with Jewel being able to return and are currently 2-1 for PCC and overall. The Hebron Lady Hawks has the potential to have a great season and are aiming for the PCC title and to win sectionals. With a strong team lead by great seniors, the whole team plans to go regionals and get the PCC title back home, at Hebron. Senior Night will be held on Sept. 29th this year and sectionals is set for the first week of October. The Hebron Hawks plan to do well.

3 Boys Volleyball P A G E 3 When practice began on August 3rd of this past summer, Coach David Ortiz immediately expressed his high expectations. Practice was hard from day one, Coach had his players doing a variation of strength and agility training, whether in the weight room or doing speed ladders on the court. Then came the dreaded stairs to run. After two hard weeks of practice, teams were decided; the varsity team consisted of ten boys and the JV of eight. The boys were ready for their first game against the Kouts Mustangs. On the first day classes were back in session, the Hebron Hawks boys volleyball team was ready to get out on the court and go to work. The Hawks arrived at Kouts High School with their adrenaline pumping over a big in conference rival game. The boys JV started out the game strong, getting an early lead on the stangs, but lost in a hard fought game in two sets. The varsity came out hoping to have a good performance, and succeeded when they bounced their opponent in the minimum three sets. The Hawks next game was at Morgan Township. The JV boys showed up ready to play a big match keeping both sets close, but in the end lost each of them. The Varsity boys came to play, though they came out flat and lost to the Cherokees in four sets. Two days after the loss to Morgan, the Hawks had a bitter taste in their mouth from the loss they received at the hands of the Cherokees. So when the Lacrosse Tigers visited Hebron, they were quickly sent back home. The Varsity Hawks rolled over their contender in four sets. The JV had another hard fought game but lost in three sets. On Thursday, September 10th the JV boys had a triangular match with the Boone Grove Wolves and the Kouts Mustangs. Hebron s boys had it that night, winning both matches in two sets with a very good performance by the underclassmen! The day after the stellar performance by the boys JV, the Varsity hoped for a similar ending in a rematch with the Morgan Cherokees! This time the game went the maximum five sets, but the Hawks didn t close out the game losing in the 5th. Girls Volleyball After a rough beginning of the season, the Hebron girls volleyball team has really come together and currently have a two game winning streak. They are hoping to continue this bright streak tonight against Westville.. Seven of the eleven varsity players will be enjoying their senior night on October 2, They include: Paige Marrs, Paige Carpenter, Jourden Bixenman, Rachel Young, Bri Spicer, Brooke Phelps, and Heaven Donovan. Good luck at sectionals, girls! Hawk s Nest School Store The Hawks Nest is the official school store that is operated by Mrs. King- Licht s Principles of Business and Advanced Business classes, along with the Business Professional s of America Club. We sell school supplies such as notebooks, folders, index cards, poster board, Post-its, pens, pencils and much more for reasonable prices. We buy in bulk while things are on sale, and pass the savings on to our customers! In addition to school necessities, we supply nutritious snacks along with hot and cold drinks to kick start your morning. Every year the class plans it s own grand re-opening celebration, and this year marks the sixth such event. Held on Tuesday, October 8, the main attraction was the mini pancake give away promotion. You could say, our customers flipped over it! As another fun attraction, with each purchase our customers got a chance to guess the number of Skittles in a jar., but with a twist there were m&ms in the jar as well! There were 362 Skittles, and the winner with the guess of 363 was Peyton Doelling. WOW! The Hawks Nest is looking forward to another wonderful year with many more surprises and promotions.
