1 Term 1 Week 8 22 March 2018 Yr3 7 Swimming Carnival st On Wednesday 21 March the Linden Park Primary School Swimming Carnival was held at Burnside Pool. The program was structured so that classes took part in tabloid activities with their class on a rotational basis. This enabled our large school numbers to be catered for in a fun and safe environment. The 50 metre and 100 metre championships were run in the middle of the day and were for all children who had trialled earlier this year. We had some terrific performances in these races. Results were as follows: 100m Boys Bowen Z 100m Girls Ella M House Results Davenport=300, Gleeson=283, Cleland=260 and Waite=242 Well Done to all participants. Please enclose correct money as no change is given or order on line. A Family photo order envelope can be collected from the front office. Please note only for Linden Park Primary school siblings. DO NOT HAND ENVELOPES INTO THE OFFICE YOUR CHILD MUST HAND IT TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER ON THE DAY Hay Road Traffic Since 2015, Linden Park Primary School has made a number of applications to the Burnside City Council for additional safety measures on Hay Road near the western laneway / gym entrance. We know that this area is particularly dangerous in the mornings and after school as many families use the main gym and OSHC gates to enter the school. Three independent traffic reports conducted by the school and Burnside Council identified that additional safety measures need to be applied to Hay Road in the way of a curb extension, Emu or Koala Crossing. Last week at the Burnside Council Meeting, Linden Park Governing Councillor Trent Schroeter and I made a deposition as to why we believe this additional crossing is important and necessary. Unfortunately the crossing was not supported by all Council members and the recommendation was rejected. The Governing Council will continue to work with the community in order to ensure the safety of our children. Please ensure that you and your children use the marked crossing on Hay Road particularly during peak times. Swimming Carnival On a positive note, it was absolutely delightful to see the Year 3 to 7 students engaged in the LPPS swimming carnival yesterday. The team spirit and positive behaviours of all students was a credit to them all. Congratulations to all the teams on their efforts. Sustainability The Early Year s Student Action Committee (SAC) will be launching a focus on sustainability and sustainable practices across the school. The school has purchased recycle and compost bins which will be shortly distributed to classes. We would like you all to support us in this worthwhile imitative and try and reduce, reuse, recycle and refuse. I wish you all a safe and happy Easter and hope you get to spend some quality time with your families. Deb O Neill, Principal
3 Governing Council 2018 At the AGM meeting of the Linden Park Primary School Governing Council on the 12 th February we welcomed 7 new parent councillors. The role of the Governing Council is to support the strategic direction of Linden Park Primary School in conjunction with the Principal and Leadership team, taking into account the needs and expectations of the school community. We would like to introduce the 2018 LPPS Governing Council: Principal Deb O Neill Parent Representatives Trent Schroeter, Vanessa Tu, Kat Wilks (absent from photo), Kate Hannemann (Chair), Mel Owen-Turner, Robbie Gallomarino, Carolyn Lam, Scott Morath and Samantha Bradley (Deputy Chair), Kate Stock, Emily Sidwell, Amanda Kidd, Katie Wilson and Helen Liu. Teacher representatives David Muldoon, Portia May (absent from photo) and Veronica Braithwaite. Reporting to the Governing Council are five sub-committees: Finance Committee, Student Learning Support Committee, Sports Committee, Campus Development Committee & Community & Fundraising Committee. The sub-committees play a critical role in the delivery of objectives set by the sub-committees and ratified by the Governing Council. Any parent from the school community is welcome to join one or more of the sub-committees (Finance Committee is by invitation only). If you wish to become an active participant in the decision-making and management of the school within the Constitutional bounds of the Governing Council please dl.0647.info@schools.sa.edu.au with your contact details. As part of the Reception s Unit of Inquiry, Who We Are students participated in a healthy cooking class run by Sprout Cooking school on Thursday 15 th March. They taught the children the importance of nutrition, where food comes from and how fantastic it is for their growing bodies. The children thoroughly enjoyed their yummy lunch after! 4 SAPSASA District swimming day On Thursday 8th March, twenty four competitors travelled to Norwood Outdoor Pool to take part in the District Swimming Carnival. All children should be commended on their great sportsmanship and behaviour on the day. Linden Park Primary School came second overall on the day. In addition there were four children selected for the Adelaide South East team to compete on Metro Day. Well done to Bowen, Dorian, Harry and Zach. Congratulations on your performances and selection into the Metro Team. Kathy Wall, PE Teacher Girls in Tech As part of International Women's Day, 15 girls from Year 6 & 7 had the opportunity to attend the first Girls in Tech day hosted by St Peters Girls School. Throughout the day students participated in a range of workshops. Hands on activities were a highlight as students flew drones, participated in coding, made circuit book marks, programmed Spheros and extinguished fires during simulated virtual reality sessions. Each Student had a tremendous day engaging in the program along with meeting students from other schools. I am sure this opportunity will present again next year. Jane Fuller, Science Teacher Linden Park Primary School Newsletter Issue 4 22 March 2018
5 Yr 6 & Yr & Aquatics th th On Friday 16, Monday 19 and Tuesday 20th March our Year 6 and 7 students enjoyed a full day of Aquatics at West Lakes Aquatics Centre. As part of the PE curriculum students enjoyed an action packed day participating in a variety of water activities including: surfing, kayaking, snorkelling, yachting and canoeing. The outdoor learning environment encouraged students to try new activities and work collaboratively as a team to achieve common goals. We were fortunate to have generally fine weather, perfect for sailing. There was a focus on sun and water safety prior to each activity and the instructors commented on the positive behaviour of our students and the enthusiasm they displayed. A middle sized one in an English seaside town. What sports, if any, were you involved with in your school days? I played football until I discovered rugby union and rugby league. I represented my county playing rugby. I dabbled in basketball as well. I was high jump champion and have county medals for shotput and 110m hurdles. How many children do you have at LPPS? One. He is in Year 3. Year 2 Kanga Cricket Maroon Game 5: The Year 2 Maroon Kanga cricket team lost their game on the weekend with Magill scoring 94 runs and losing 9 wickets while LPPS scored 98 runs but lost 12 wickets, so a close loss on average. Derek Woodcock, Out of Hours Sports Co-ordinator Why did you decide to volunteer to help out the school cricket team? If I didn t volunteer, the boys wouldn t have been able to play. What's the best thing about coaching the students playing cricket or any other involvement at the school? The enthusiasm of the boys is infectious. They are a lovely bunch and I really look forward to Saturday morning and coaching them. The leaps they make in their cricketing ability on a weekly basis is astonishing and it is brilliant to watch and to be a small part of. SAPSASA Knockout Tennis Year 6/7 SAPSASA Knockout Boys Tennis: The Boys tennis team had a comfortable first up win against Rose Park Primary School, winning all 4 singles matches and both doubles. Well done to Austin, Michael, Jah and Yehan.
