2 From the Director s Chair Ed & Jeanette Carr, FL1-K Chapter Directors Not Your Every Day DQ Blizzard. With 2018 in the rear-view mirror, we look forward to an exciting and FUN filled 2019 year of riding and socializing with our wonderful GWRRA friends. Putting a cap on 2018 was a two and one-half week, 6700-mile trip for Jeanette and I. Leaving Daytona Beach on Sunday, December 9 th with the goal of being in Santa Cruz, CA on Friday 14 December to attend the Graduation Ceremony from Nursing School of Jeanette s son s fiancée, Tatiana. We spent four great days in Santa Cruz, then headed north east toward Sacramento and Reno on our way via US 50 to Denver, CO. All was good with the weather, with temps running between 40 and 60 degrees until we ran into a blizzard, not the kind you get at DQ, in Vail, Colorado, above 8000 feet, on I-70. Temperatures dropped to the low 20 s, snow blowing so hard you couldn t see the vehicles directly in front. This lasted until travelling up and over the 10,000-foot level and back down the eastern side to about 8000 ft. Made a lot of skiers happy. That evening we drove into the Saddle Rock neighborhood of Aurora, Co for a two-day visit to my brother s widow, Kerry. From Denver, we continued our trek to spend a few days of Christmas in Atlanta, Georgia with Daughter Jauxniece, Grandson Michael and Granddaughter Marissa. Leaving Atlanta early on Thursday, we arrived back in Daytona in time to make the Lotto Dinner with 32 of our GWRRA friends at DB Pickles in Ormond Beach. With the new year comes a change to the Chapter Team. Chapter Treasurer Jim & Juanita Butler have, after four great years, decided it is time to step down. Jim & Juanita always added to the fun and laughter to our Chapter Gatherings and are involved in their community as volunteers at the Flagler County Resource Center Food Bank. Jim kept impeccable records and submitted totally correct Financial Reports to District and always had the Chapter Charter fee paid to District on time. We thank Jim & Juanita for their wonderful service to the members, the Chapter Staff and to GWRRA. Starting out the new year found 17 Chapter K members in Welaka, Fl, for the first Florida District Ride-in of 2019 to Shrimp-R-US and more. Rumor has it, there were approximately 300 Florida District Members in attendance. We are looking forward to attending our 17 th Florida District Chapter Conference since April 2002 when we joined this outstanding Organization. There is always something to learn. We hope you are making plans to attend the Florida District Rally, March 21, 22 & 23, at the Altamonte Springs Hilton. 3 Flagler County Resource Center Food Bank Update Ruth Sober, Sunshine Lady, and Gary Sober, Webmaster We're On Our Way......to our gift of four tons of food and cash donations to the Flagler County Resource Center's Food Bank. Chapter Brothers and Sisters, you dramatically ended 2018 with generosity and love for your fellow inhabitants of this Great Nation. In December you gave 698 pounds of food to the F.C.R.C's. Food Bank. Now, that is including what your generous December cash donations bought in the form of protein (meat) for families and seniors in need. Totals donated in 2018 are 2919 pounds. We are well on our way to donate our 4th ton in four years. Amazing! Thank you so very much! As far as we are concerned, these wonderful donations say a lot about our Chapter K members. You care. 4 Couple of the Year A Little About Your Chapter K 2018 Couple Of The Year Ruth was born in Michigan but moved to Florida at a very young age to live with her grandmother after her mother passed away. She attend school in Holy Hill, and graduated from Mainland High School. She then attended Daytona Beach Community College before becoming a nurse at Halifax Hospital. I was a farm boy from a small town in Michigan where I attended school then spent some time in the Army at Fort Leonard Wood, Fort Riley and Fort Sill. I then went into partnership with my father on the farm. Strange as it may seem, Ruth and I have mutual cousins. My aunt married Ruth's uncle. In October of 1959 Ruth drove up to Michigan for a fall vacation. She was staying with a cousin in our little farm town. One day I got a call from our cousin, "Would you like to go see a movie with us and Ruth tonight?" I really only knew Ruth by name, but said OK. Was a dull movie to me and guess I slept through most of it. Might say I did not impress the big city girl from Daytona. But when we got back from the movie I asked " Would you like to go down to the restaurant tomorrow night for a coke, soda or something?" She sort of reluctantly said OK. The next day, after the restaurant date (?), Ruth left to return to Florida. In December, a buddy of mine and I decided to take a trip and go to Florida. We did all of Florida, west coast, middle of the state and the east coast. When we came back up the east side of the state we visited Daytona Beach. I said, "Let's go look Ruth up." Found where she lived and we spent a couple hours there then we headed home to Michigan. But...I got her phone number, and called her many times over the next month. In mid January during one call, I said, "Would you like to get married?" She said yes! So in February I was back in Florida. We got married on the 6th and headed for Michigan that same day. 58 years and still together! So that's how a country boy wins the heart of a big city girl. Two short, sort of dates and lots of phone calls. Shortly after we were married we purchased the first of the three farms we owned. Our daughter, Laura, was born in 1961, son, Scott in In 1995, when we retired, Ruth from lab tech at the county health department and I from the company where I worked as a mechanical engineer for 27 years. We had the three farms during all this time and also had an agro business selling dairy equipment along with being the county distributor for Pioneer high bred seeds. We auctioned off all the farm equipment, sold the farms, the business, and everything but the household and personal items and moved to the warm South. This had been our plan from the day we got married. I had ridden motorcycles from high school days...several different models, but Ruth was never too much into them. When we moved to Florida I sold the Honda Silver Wing I had at the time, and said it's time to give up bikes. We had been here for a few months and one day we were driving by Jim Walker Honda, and noticed he had a Gold Wing trike out in front. Ruth told me if I would buy that, she would ride with me. I told her January

5 "We don't need it." Couple days later Ruth said, "If you don't go buy that trike, I will." Guess what? We ended up with a bike again. We rode all over the state for a couple years. One day we were going by an ice cream shop in Ormond Beach. There were a dozen Gold Wings in front so we stopped to see what was going on. It was Chapter H, GWRRA. The first ones to greet and talk to us were Dan Randall and Ray West. That was it! We joined GWRRA and Chapter H. We were in H for many years. During that time we attended the inaugural meeting of Chapter K. Later we moved to Palm Coast and decided to make Chapter K our home chapter. Gary & Ruth Sober Chapter Couple of the Year From the Membership. Christmas Grandma, by Don & Judi Black Helping people isn t a burden, it s an opportunity. Chapter FL1-K has always been generous in supporting those in need. The efforts to collect food at every chapter gathering for the Flagler County Resource Center Food Bank is a good example. Ruth and Gary Sober have delivered over 6575 pounds of food, plus cash donations, over the past 36 months to the food bank. All from chapter K. In the May 11,2018 edition of the Daytona Beach News-Journal there was an article about Grandma Rescues Children that was brought to my attention by Barbara Randall. I showed the article to our Chapter Director, Ed Carr and got approval to make Mrs. Wilson a chapter fund raiser. The Christmas Grandma project was born. The article was about Glenda Wilson, a local retired, widowed, resident, who took in and later adopted her six grandchildren after their mother dropped them off on the door step eight years ago and moved to parts unknown without warning. Since then she has raised them as her own children. Wilson said, There have been serious issues and hard times. Now that they have proper health care and education, they are just normal kids Chapter FL1-K made Mrs. Wilson their Christmas Grandma and started to collect money to help her this Christmas. After collecting donations at only three-chapter gatherings we collected $1068. This is an astonishing amount from a small chapter. Every member and guest who contributed to this cause is to be congratulated, and thanked, for their generosity. The chapter Treasurer, Jim Butler, wrote a check from the chapter, which was delivered to Mrs. Wilson on December 11 th by Dan Randall and me. Believe me she can use the help. She called me later the same day to thank all of those who helped with the donations. I want to pass that THANK YOU along to all of chapter K. It is truly a blessing to be able to help others and to belong to chapter K Thank you, and Happy New Year to all. Don & Judi Black January

6 Membership Enhancement Musings Jeanette Carr, Membership Enhancement Ed and I would like to thank Jim & Juanita Butler for serving the past 4 years as the treasures for Chapter FL1-K. They have been GWRRA members since They joined the FL1-K staff in 2014 when Don & Judi Black were C.D.s and they kindly continued with Ed & I. They excelled in a position which some find confusing. Jim is very organized and meticulous and has always excelled in his career (building nuclear plants) and in volunteer positions. Jim and Juanita are very active in their church and volunteer at the Bunnell Food Bank. Juanita volunteers at the local animal shelter and often is a foster mother for animals. Jim is a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and is very active in the local club of which he is also the treasurer. Jim and Juanita also made it possible to secure and use their church for our last several rallies. This was major help for the chapter. Jim and Juanita are always fun people to be around. You should have seen Juanita s dance to show how well her new hip worked. Their creativity and fun side always shows when they dress up for Halloween. They have lots of interesting stories to tell and are always ready to listen to others. Jim s dry sense of humor and Juanita s exuberance are always interesting. Jim has also found fun games, trivia, and new birthday songs to add interest to our gatherings. Besides being locally busy, Jim and Juanita often travel to family events, cruises, and the casinos. 7 District Ride Educators Here we are, at the end of yet another year and the beginning of a new one. So many things have transpired yet so many things to look forward to. I often think of that saying of a cup half full or is it half empty? I guess it s how you really want to look at things, right? Well, as for me, I would rather look at the bright side. I have a roof over my head, a bed to sleep in, food for my table and a Honda Gold Wing to ride! It really don t get no better than that, now does it? Of course it doesn t. Health wise well, my doctors have been helping me to stay healthy enough to enjoy riding my Wing. My TRC and ARC Instructors have been helping me to stay safety conscious and trained enough to stay safe while riding that Wing so I can safely have FUN. So, all in all I think my cup is pretty much on the full side in spite of myself. We have rediscovered chapter life with our involvement in Chapter FL1-T and have made many new friends. This past month, we have volunteered to ring the bells at Walmart for the Salvation Army, enjoyed our chapter Christmas party and been on several of their scheduled dinner rides and rode in the Inverness Christmas parade. Well, most of us rode. Ruth Diehl and Pam walked in front of the bikes, holding up the chapter banner. Not too badly done, for two senior bikers. As you have the opportunity to become more involved in your chapter and its activities, hopefully you will discover how much FUN you will have. Pam and I trust everyone had a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year is wished from our house (and Goldwing) to yours. Shrimps R Us is the first District ride of the new year, on January 1. Even if you don t enjoy the seafood menu, they have landlubber fare, plus the chance to see lots and lots of your Goldwing family. Hope to see you there!!!!! I want to encourage everyone to make plans to attend the Chapter Conference- January 11 and 12 at the Hilton Hotel in Altamonte Springs. There will be lots of information for you and your chapter, as well as turning in your financial report for I want to extend a heartfelt thanks to all our chapters and their members for their support in our annual Gold Wing give-away raffle. At the time of this writing I only have 3000 tickets left here in my office. This is awesome! Thank you! I will be bringing what I have left to the chapter conference in case your chapter needs some.
