1 CELEBRATING 15 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA Chicago, Illinois Chapter - American Singles Golf Association - July 2008 HOLE IN ONE - NANCY PIERZ Our esteemed Nancy Pierz aced the ninth hole at our outing Saturday at Green Gardens in Frankfort. Even with strong and gusty winds, this 113 yard gold course hole was no match for Nancy s skill. Playing partners, Ray Kalal - Joanne Jacobs, and Bob Topor witnessed and attested the event and Nancy recorded the ace in the Pro Shop. Several drinks were had by all in the clubhouse to celebrate the event. Nancy is the winner of the $250 prize from the Chapter for anyone recording an ace in a regularly scheduled Chapter outing. We have had record numbers at our events so far thanks to your participation. Our scramble was a huge success with 88 players! Standing ovation please for the Outstanding Scramble Team, headed up by Bob Geeve and Michael Daugherty. With main support players, Joanne Jacobs, Margaret Muller, Joanne Graske, Melanie Jones (minor support of bag ladies at curbside -- Mary Ann Figel, Lori McSweeney and Mary Lou McCann). Events are filling up fast, we need to give the courses a 1-2 week commitment on our numbers, So do NOT miss out -- sign-up early & often by going to Don't wait until the last minute as the event will be full. If you do, enter your membership ID and password and edit your membership information to include your cell phone. PAST EVENTS Saturday, May 31, 2008 Village Greens - Plenty of sun with some clouds. Temperature in the mid 70s. No rain!! Just a great May day for golf. We had 52 players, 3 guests Steve Mueller, Larry Miller and Lynn Torre. We also had several new members come out for the first time! (Larry had so much fun, he went home and joined ASGA!). Women s Nearest to the Pin and Hole- Marie DiVirgilio - Hole 4, Debbie Bradel - Hole 7, Karen Johnson Hole 13; and Roxane Engel Hole 17. Men s Nearest to the Pin and Hole - Bob Wier Double winner on Holes 4 & 13; Ray Vogel hole 7; Kevin Berg Hole 17 Unisex Longest Putt: Steve Mueller (a guest, no less) on Hole 9 and Armond Cozzi on Hole 18. A team event called Fantasy Ball was played among the foursomes. Each player in the foursome had to play the fantasy ball on his/her designated holes throughout the round. The team that brought back the ball with the lowest score won. Team members Tim Dowling, Marie DiVirgilio, Kurt Kupitz and Kathy Braun won the game. Not only did they keep the ball for the entire 18 holes, they also brought it in with the lowest score 89. No other team had a score that low. Some teams even lost their ball during the round. One team who shall remain nameless, (oh what the heck- Jane, Jeanne, Mary Lou and Joanne) lost their fantasy ball on the second shot of the first hole!! Sunday June 1, Balmoral Woods, S. Balmoral Woods Dr, Crete, IL. As the calendar turned to June, 36 of our members traveled to far south suburban Crete for golf at Balmoral Woods. Event host, Tom Ullsperger, promised (and delivered!) great golf and fantastic weather for the outing. Players were greeted with blue skies, light winds and temperatures around 80 degrees, along with one of the more beautiful and challenging courses in the Chicago area. The elevation changes and heavily wooded terrain make for a unique experience for players. Those sharing in the individual prizes for the day were Susan Ouchterloney (#5), Lisa Pesavento (#8) and Nancy Hill (#16) for Women's Closest to the Pin. For Men's Closest to the Pin, winners were Hank Calzaretta (#5), Doug Cmiel (#8) and Kevin Berg (#16). Honors for Longest Putt on the 18th Green go to Karen O'Donnell and Bob Geeve. 3 It started out VERY sunny, hot, humid and sticky. However, the severe storm Gods intervened and interrupted some of us who were having very good rounds of golf that day. Others, IGNORED the severe storm Gods and continued play until they were finished. A special thanks to my Arnold Stanger who kept all the 4 somes on pace getting out on the course and to Jeanne Schneeberger, who helped with check in and all the dinner arrangements. Saturday June 14, 2008 Annual Golf Scramble, Mill Creek Golf Club, 39W525 Herrington Drive, Geneva, Il. 86 members and guest turned out for the 7 th annual Scramble put on by the ASGA Chicago Chapter. The weather was just magnificent with warm temperatures and sunny skies since the day before and the day after the outing was stormy. A new format for the Scramble was unveiled that required the player who shot was chosen for the next shot could not make that shot. All players were allowed to put once the ball was on the putting green. This format was a huge success, helped speed up play and should be considered for future Scramble events. After golf, the players moved into the tent section for refreshments, dinner and dancing. A special thanks to Karen O Donnell and her greeters, Mary Ann Figel and Lori McSweeney who helped the players get their bearing upon arrival at the event, to the check-in ladies, Melanie Jones, Joanne Graske and Geni Witzel, the Mill Creek Golf Course personnel and the Scramble Coordination Team consisting of Michael Daugherty Event Coordinator, Bob Geeve Golf Course Coordinator, Melanie Jones Dinner Coordinator, JoAnn Graske Music Coordinator and Joanne Jacobs & Margaret Muller Prize Coordinators. (Tim s nephew home from his doctor duties in the US Navy glad he could join us). About 37 stayed for dinner at Boonies Bar and Grill. We were seated inside, right off the 18th hole so we could cheer and jeer those who made putts and missed the 3 foot putts. Unfortunately, Bob Geeve and Mike Colligan had to finish in a pouring down rain the last 2 holes (but they did finish) Special thanks to Robin Rash and Joanne Grashe for helping check in the

6 CELEBRATING 15YEARS OF SINGLESGOLF IN AMERICA AMERICAN SINGLES GOLF ASSOCIATION JULY 2008 Tom Alsop woke-up on Wednesday, June 11th a new man, a little sore but with potentially another fifty years in him. The day before, he had successful quadruple bypass surgery. Yes, maybe too many hot dogs at the turn or maybe too many rides in the golf cart when he should have been walking. Literally two days before ASGA s largest event of the year at Pinehurst, Alsop found out he had to have bypass surgery. Knowing surgery was a couple of weeks off, I just wanted to focus on doing a good job and taking care of people s needs. Some players were asking why aren t you playing golf? and I gave them the same reason as I haven t played golf at the event in the past I enjoy taking pictures of each player out on the course. Although my doctor wanted to schedule it before Pinehurst, I pleaded with him to postpone it. I suppose because he s a golfer himself, he allowed me to finish the event. Resting easy at his home in Charlotte, Alsop reflects on the experience. It does make you think this is pretty serious stuff. I could miss my tee time for the rest of my life! We ve had a lot of members go through a lot of things in their lives. You get close to them and then every now and then, something tragic happens and we lose them. It s easy to get philosophical when faced with something this dramatic, Alsop continues. We all pray that we can enjoy life to its fullest and that we fulfill our given purpose. As we grow older, each of us realize we have fewer and fewer years on this planet. We want to push away Father Time with the longest club in our bag. And most of the time, we re successful. We re fortunate we live in the 21st century. Regardless, major surgery makes you reflect on the important things in life. Pinehurst Went Well - New Year s is Next National Event We had 310 people attend Memorial Day Weekend in Pinehurst at the reviews went well. For 2009, we re looking for locations. Criteria: should be mid-atlantic where at least 50% of the attendees can drive to the event, and keep us somewhat in one location. We d prefer a location with three golf courses coming out of the same clubhouse (due to members driving together). If you have suggestions for Memorial Day next year, please go to the CONTACT US button at SinglesGolf.com. We will announce our New Year s location by mid-to-late August. Details TBA August, Clarification Policy Announced Back in April, a new policy relative to membership terms was announced via the website in order to clarify a few things. It is our policy to post this in this newsletter as well: Membership, Equality, Marriage and Termination of Membership (established April, 2008) ASGA membership is open to any person, 21 years of age or older, who is unmarried (i.e. never married, divorced, legally separated or widowed) without regard to race, creed, gender or national origin. Any official event sponsored by the national organization or local chapters must be open to all members on an equal basis subject to space availability. Members who marry during the term of their dues period shall remain members until the end of their dues period. The national office has the right to decline or terminate any member's membership if the national office determines that such membership is not in the best interest of ASGA. In such cases, dues will be refunded on a prorata basis.
