8 Course Update - Sept Iknow everyone was anxious to get back on the course greens and hopefully you have had a chance to get out and play on the new miniverde grass. We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation as we worked to resurface the greens. If you have played the course since the greens were opened, you know that the greens are still not yet perfect. This is normal. We expect to have areas after a grow-in where the grass growth is slower or "thinner" than in other areas. Remember, each green complex has its own unique environment that effects grass growth. There are many factors that can have an impact on the growth of the grass and condition of a green. Some of these factors are the amount of sunlight, air circulation, surface drainage, humidity, contours, elevation, and soil content which can be different on each green. We have been working and will continue to work to improve the areas of the greens that have been slower to fill-in. On a weekly basis (normally on Mondays) we will be topdressing the greens with sand and the sand will be applied heavier in the thinner areas. We will also continue to fertilize the greens weekly, especially in the weaker spots to promote continued grass growth for as long as the soil temperatures allow. One additional note for holes #1 and #4, we will not follow the normal pin rotation due to the sod that has been added on the greens. On a daily basis we have begun and will continue to groom the greens (with brushes attached to the greens mowers), mow the greens at.150" height (which is still slightly higher than our normal.130" height) and we are rolling the greens to help promote a smoother roll for your golf ball. Our #1 priority now is to keep the new grass and root system as healthy as possible as we approach winter so that the greens will be prepared for the colder temperatures and wetter conditions that we will experience in the off season. The greens height will be maintained slightly higher until next spring to protect them from heat and disease and to have them fully established for their first winter. It's critical we have a good stand of grass and roots before this winter to ensure a smooth spring transition. So, slightly higher greens heights will help the grass stay healthy throughout the winter. That means the greens will not roll as fast this fall as we expect to be able to get them next spring. We also have some other projects that are ongoing for this fall. We will be sodding many areas of the golf course. The ladies tee on #16 will be sodded with emerald zoysia grass, which is better for dealing with shade. We will be adding 419 bermuda grass in some of the collars and surrounds of the greens, as well as areas of rough. And, we will be adding St. Augustine grass under the oaks trees on holes #5 and #9. St. Augustine is a thicker, heartier grass that is well suited to handle heat and requires less water. Although you probably will not want to hit out of it often. Lastly, you have probably noticed the half of our putting green where we experimented with the stripping method of resurfacing has not been very healthy. The other half of the green (which was resurfaced using the no-till method, same as the course greens) has shown to be a better fit for our course and environment which helped us in planning our course greens project. Unfortunately, the stripped side of the green has not been able to handle the lack of air circulation and the summer heat, and as a result has been more susceptible to disease and wilt. We will be growing the grass out on this half of the green and maintaining it at tee height (instead of green height) to help improve the turf health and grow out the wilted areas. Nematodes in the soil have also resulted in dead spots on that side of the green, as well. Hopefully, we will be able to get the turf healthy enough again to lower the mowing heights and at that time we will being to mow it at greens height. Please be patient as this process is expected to take some time. We hope you enjoy the new greens on the course! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Gordon Williams, Golf Course superintendant 8

13 LGA NEWS! Alas, we are back to regulation greens on our own course. Please ensure you are attentive to repairing divot & ball marks to keep our new greens in good shape and to aide in continuing the grow-in process. While you re at it, as the saying goes, fix yours and one more. If you are unsure how to properly repair ball marks & divots on the greens please ask someone from the pro shop to show you. Improper repairs can do more harm than good. We look forward to increased participation in our weekly play days - Wednesday s and Saturday s at 8:30 am. We will change to our fall tee time of 9:30 am on September 30. Other upcoming LGA dates of interest include our annual joint blitz with the men on Tuesday, October 27. This will be a team event using a modified Stableford format. This has always been a fun event for both men and women. A sign-up sheet will be posted on the board outside the Pro Shop in early October. We will be holding our annual Couples Scramble and Pot Luck Dinner on Sunday, November 16. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this year and we will actually get to play and not just eat. 13 Finally, on Wednesday, December 2 will be the LGA s Year-end Scramble and AGM. We will be electing a new slate of officers for and presenting 2016 awards. If you have not yet been in the ladies locker room recently you will notice it has had a much improved facelift. Thanks, to Judy Hair for spearheading this effort. We hope to see everyone on Wednesdays and/or Saturdays. I've been playing tennis since I was 13, and played high school tennis under coach Heinz Maurer, playing in multiple state playoffs. I also have played college tennis at the University of Mississippi. As of recently I played in my first professional level tournament in Memphis, TN. I have now been teaching tennis for almost 5 years, and have been certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) for a little over a year. I will be offering private lessons at the Coosaw Creek Country Club tennis courts. Private lessons are available to anyone of any age (although I typically suggest 8yrs+) and focus on developing necessary skills, while keeping the emphasis on having fun. Lesson rates are $40 an hour for private instruction and $30 an hour for hitting lessons (hitting lessons are for anyone who has already developed tennis skills but would like to further develop their match play mentality). I am available by appointment only and can be reached by phone at (843) or by at wrwtennis@live.com William Wert USPTA Certified Professional Look for Adult and Junior Tennis Clinics starting this Fall!
