7 7 Note From the Pro We have now crowned our Annual Club Champions, Jeff Hemphill and Peggy Brinson, and as well as our Super Senior Champions, John Gaag and Dee Spoone. But, that does not mean that the golf season is over. The Coosaw Cup will be held on November 7 & 8. Once all the points are finalized and accounted for, we will contact the top 14 men and top 6 women in mid October to fill out the teams for the Coosaw Cup. We will more than likely have to go further down the list to fill the teams, so if you didn t make the cut, you may still get a chance to participate. The Coosaw Cup will be a Ryder Cup format and has always been fun and exciting, so I encourage everyone who qualifies to keep November 5th & 6th open to play. Also, we will be hosting our 2nd Annual Champion s Dinner on October 16th at 6pm. All members are invited to join us as we recognize our 2016 overall gross & net major tournament winners with a commemorative plaque. After searching for 5 minutes, the ball is not found and the player declares it lost. While walking back to the tee, the player is told by a course marshal that a spectator picked up his ball and left with it. How should the player proceed? Answer on Next Page

11 11 INSTruCTION COrNEr ADDING DISTANCE! Everyone would like to hit the ball farther. So, for the next couple articles I am going to talk about ways to help you gain more distance. The key to hitting it further is to increase swing speed, without losing control. One factor we have to overcome is that as we age, we lose the flexibility and muscle mass needed to create speed. But no matter what our age, we are still able to work out and train whatever we have left in the tank. In this article I will cover fitness tips shared by jetelitetraining.com to assist us in adding distance and control in the golf swing. -The first key to hitting it farther is to understand that you can only swing the club as fast as you can slow it down. Your brain will only let you move as fast as you can without injury. So, if you want to hit it farther you must first be able to slow the club down safely at faster speeds. There are two key body parts responsible for deceleration after the swing and they are the hamstrings and the scapulars, muscles between your shoulder blades. Here are a few ways to help you train your body to decelerate the club at faster speeds. -First thing to try is to walk or pedal on a stationary bike backwards. This will strengthen the back of your legs; try spending half of your cardio time moving in reverse. Stretching downward towards your toes with legs straightened will help stretch this area as well. The second drill is to pretend someone put a pencil between your shoulder blades, and you need to keep it there by pinching them together. Do this several times, squeezing in the back and then releasing. Doing these exercises will help train and build up your muscles that will help you gain more control of the golf club and hopefully add some distance! John Harrison Golf Professional rules QuESTION ANSWEr A: It is determined that the ball was not lost, but instead moved by an outside agency (the spectator) before the ball was declared lost. Therefore, the player is allowed to replace a ball as close as possible to where the ball was picked up by the spectator, without a penalty and finish play of the hole Golf Event Schedule OCT 1, 2 Sat, Sun Mixed Team Championship** Scramble/Best Ball 9am SG 16 Sun Champions Recognition Dinner 6pm NOV 5, 6 Sat, Sun Coosaw Cup** Team Match Play 9am TT 11 Fri Night Golf Scramble 9 Holes Team Scramble 6pm SG 20 Sun Turkey Shoot Team Scramble 12pm SG DEC 3 Sat End of Year Shamble Team Shamble 10am SG 56 Tues Mon CALGA 9am SG

12 Course/Greens Update We have been working and continue to work to improve the areas of the greens that have been slower to fillin. Most of the greens sodding is now complete and we should continue to see the greens improve in the weaker areas for as long as the soil temperatures allow. On a weekly basis (normally on Mondays) we will continue topdressing the greens with sand. The sand will be applied heavier in the thinner areas. In preparation for winter dormancy, we have raised the mowing heights on the greens at.150" height (which is still slightly higher than our normal.130" height) and we are rolling the greens to help promote a smoother roll for your golf ball. We have also begun applying the chemical Chloro-Green on the course greens which will allow the dormant grass to keep its green color. This spray pigment is not a paint or dye and does not cause any stress to the grass plant. The putting green re-sodding project has also been completed and we have extended the chipping area utilizing the tif-grand grass that 12 was installed around the collars of the course greens. The new sod is not yet ready for use, but we plan to have it back up to playability standards by early spring. In October we will be over-seeded all tee boxes on the course and the practice range due to the heavy concentration of use in those areas throughout the winter months. We will however continue the practice of not overseeding our fairways and greens again this year, which has proven to have a very positive impact on the quality of our turf, especially in our fairways. We have raised the heights in the fairways to allow for a thicker stand of grass e for our winter play. Hopefully, mother nature will be kind to us this fall and winter and we'll have the course in great shape for next spring We continue to ask your help in repairing ball marks on the greens and filling your divots with sand, especially as the recovery period is longer during the winter. If you have any questions regarding the golf course, please feel free to contact me. Gordon Williams, Golf Course Superintendant

I've been playing tennis since I was 13, and played high school tennis under coach Heinz Maurer, playing in multiple state playoffs. I also have played college tennis at the University of Mississippi. As of recently I played in my first professional level tournament in Memphis, TN. I have now been teaching tennis for almost 5 years, and have been certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) for a little over a year. I will be offering private lessons at the Coosaw Creek Country Club tennis courts. Private lessons are available to anyone of any age (although I typically suggest 8yrs+) and focus on developing necessary skills, while keeping the emphasis on having fun. Lesson rates are $40 an hour for private instruction and $30 an hour for hitting lessons (hitting lessons are for anyone who has already developed tennis skills but would like to further develop their match play mentality). 14 14 S CCWC NEWS eptember was an active month for the Coosaw Creek Women s Club. This Fall, we are planning a number of fun activities too. On Labor Day, we sponsored a hole at the Patrick Beale Memorial Golf Tournament. The next week, two dozen ladies met at Sandra Carter s house for a meeting and wine tasting event, with Meredith Bell, a consultant from Wine Shop At Home. Later in September, a number of our members gathered at the clubhouse for a pop-up Social. These have proven popular, so look forward to more of them. No program is planned at the pop-ups, just an message about a pop-up gathering will be sent out about a week ahead; the Socials are simply for friends and neighbors to get together. In October, we may change that to a fire pit Social backyard gathering. Barbara Megorden, Sandra Carter and Lynn Lapchak Coming in November, CCWC women will again be selling holiday Poinsettias. They will be available in 2 sizes, in either white or red. The plants will be delivered to Coosaw direct from the nursery, and will be ready for pick up after Thanksgiving. We thank you in advance for supporting our efforts, and purchasing your poinsettias through us for your home, business associates, and friends.
