11 11 instruction corner instructional tip of the month - long bunker ShotS Most golfers understand the concept of executing a basic greenside bunker shot: You want to swing through the sand, under the ball. But when it s a longer bunker shot of 20 to 40 yards, the fatal mistake I see is swinging harder to try to hit the ball farther. Do that and you usually end up taking too much sand and leaving the shot well short. Instead, follow this checklist. First thing to do is to take a less lofted club, the longer the shot the longer the club. Do not be afraid to use a less lofted club just remember to open up the face before you take your grip. Secondly aim closer to the ball, instead of hitting a few inches behind like you would in a standard bunker shot try to hit just about an inch behind the ball. Third you need to make a full turn to generate enough power to propel the ball all the way there. Finally maintain your knee flex, doing this will help ensure the club glides through the sand under the ball, don t just chop and stop, keep swinging through. A high finish will help loft the ball into the air and send it the distance you need. So try these for things and you should see improvement in your long bunker shots. TENNIS ANYONE? Hi! My name is William Wert. I'm originally from Oxford, MS but I've spent about half my life in the Summerville, SC area. I've been playing tennis since I was 13, and played high school tennis under coach Heinz Maurer, playing in multiple state playoffs. I also have played college tennis at the University of Mississippi. As of recently I played in my first professional level tournament in Memphis, TN. I have now been teaching tennis for almost 5 years, and have been certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) for a little over a year. I will be offering private lessons at the Coosaw Creek Country Club tennis courts. Private lessons are available to anyone of any age (although I typically suggest 8yrs+) and focus on developing necessary skills, while keeping the emphasis on having fun. Lesson rates are $40 an hour for private instruction and $30 an hour for hitting lessons (hitting lessons are for anyone who has already developed tennis skills but would like to further develop their match play mentality). I am available by appointment only and can be reached by phone at (843) or by at wrwtennis@live.com William Wert USPTA Certified Professional Golf Event Schedule 11 Fri Night Golf Scramble 9 Holes Team Scramble 6pm SG 20 Sun Turkey Shoot Team Scramble 12pm SG DEC 3 Sat End of Year Shamble Team Shamble 10am SG 56 Tues Mon CALGA 9am SG

12 Golf Course Update - December 12 Well, as reach the end of November, we have only received.4 inches of rain since Hurricane Mathew blew through the Low Country. This has both positive and negative effects on the golf course. The positive is that there has been great golf weather in that the course has dried out so you are getting a lot of roll from your tee shots. And, it s not cart path only, so most of you are me by my actual first name, and not what you have been calling me over the last year or so. But the negative is that the turf roots are also drying and they still require water. That s why we have been running the irrigation most nights. Temperatures have usually fallen much lower by this time of year. Since it is still warm, the grass needs to be watered regularly to stay healthy. Due to the timing of when the storm hit, we had to push back our annual pre-emergent application to prevent poa-annua and winter weeds. We are now monitoring to see how the turf responds to the later application. If we notice weed and poaannua growth, we will have to apply post emergent products to kill them. Prior to the storm, we were able to apply a fungicide to mitigate any potential disease that could have been caused by the prolonged standing water. Luckily, that application seems to have been successful. Leaves are now falling quickly, so we are trying to keep up by blowing and mulching them as fast as we can. And no, we are not trying to blow leaves off of the golf course and into your property. We simply are blowing leaves out of the high play areas and into the outer edges of the course prior to mulching them. If we happen to get a few leaves into your yards, I promise it is not intentional. Please be patient with us as we are limited in how fast we can get to all areas of the course. And, we still have stumps to grind and fallen trees to remove over the winter months. Hopefully, our members can take advantage of the great weather while it lasts and get out on the course to play.
