For more information contact the golf shop. rules question of the month: q. At a par-3 hole, a player, believing his original ball may be lost, plays a provisional ball. He searches five minutes for the original ball and then plays the provisional ball onto the green. At that point, the original ball is found in the hole. What is the ruling? answer on next page instruction CorNer Now is the time to work on your game, as the season kicks off. We offer private instruction at a fee of $50 per lesson. Book a series of 3 private lessons for $125 or a series of 5 private lessons for $200. Group lessons, clinics and playing lessons also offered. instructional tip of the month: Many people struggle playing out of bunkers. But once you understand a few key factors required to successfully hitting out of the sand, your bunker play will improve dramatically. Use a higher lofted club such as a sand or lob wedge Open the face of the club by rotating your grip while keeping your hands in front of the ball at address Place the ball further forward and move your weight towards your left side with a slightly open stance. Keep your shoulders level with the ground in the bunker Use your shoulders to swing the club and be very aggressive through the ball. Imagine the golf ball is sitting on top of a dollar bill and you want to scoop that dollar bill out of the sand, without trying to hit the golf ball. Once you get a grasp of these 6 factors, bunker shots will become much less intimidating. Focusing on the correct technique and making sure to use the sand to throw the golf ball out of the bunker, instead of trying to hit the golf ball out of the bunker will lead to higher and softer bunker shots. Contact the Golf Shop at for more information. 7

8 8 rules answer: a. The player s score is 1. The play of the hole was completed when the player holed the original ball (Rule 1-1). NeW event Friday guest day! On Mondays and Fridays the range will open at 8:30am to accommodate weekly maintenance. New practice turf has been installed at the driving range to provide a more authentic turf feel and to reduce shock when hitting from the mats. The maintenance crew will be working to improve the turf at the Member s practice tee. Please respect the closure of this tee from time to time so that our crew can complete necessary maintenance. Also, we would like to remind our members that range balls and bags are NOT to be removed from the driving range. 9 April Course Update The temperature is finally starting to warm up and as a result, we are beginning to see the grass waking up from winter dormancy. We still have not reached the all important 150 degree rule (the sum of the high and low temperatures must reach 150 degrees or over for several consecutive days for active growth to occur) but at least we are starting to identify where healthy grass stands are located indicated by the greening up of the bermuda grass. As we continue to move into the warmer months we will be actively applying fertilizer and weed control to get the turf healthy and ready for play. greens update & maintenance plans The greens appear to be ready for growth. However, there are still some thin areas on a few of the greens (such as #1, 4, 11 & 14, as well as most of #15 green) that we will be agressively maintaining in an attempt to push the grass coverage, as well as determine if additional seeding or sodding will be required. In addition to the small tine aerification or spiking of the course greens scheduled on Mar. 28th, we will also be performing a more aggressive drill & fill aerification, fertilizing heavily, topdressing and verti-cutting the weaker greens. It is important to note that we plan to increase the frequency of small tine aerifications (spiking), fertilizing, verti-cutting and top dressing of all greens in an effort to strengthen the grass and root system during the growing season, as well as improve playing conditions. Most of these programs will not result in any serious disruption to play, but please be patient with us as we try to stimulate as much grass growth as possible on the greens. We have also completed the installation of tif grand bermuda collars around all greens. This will help to slow the encroachment of our 419 fairway and rough grass on to the greens complexes, allowing us to maintain the greens surface to their actual size. ongoing maintenance items This April we will be finishing up a few maintenance items around the course: tree removal - While most of our tree removal is complete, there are still some additional areas where we plan to remove a few more in an effort to improve air circulation and increase sunlight on the course. Drainage installation - We have completed drainage installations and fixes in a majority of the key locations on the course, but we still plan to install additional drainage to the right of #10 green, as well. FertiliziNg FairWayS - On April 7th we will be applying an organic, slow release fertilizer on the fairways to help stimulate growth of the 419 bermuda grass throughout the course. tee BoXeS - We will be leveling and resodding the blue tee on hole #1 and the white and green tees on hole #6, as well as building a new green tee on #16. These tee boxes have become very crowned and this project will greatly improve the playability and tee box condition on these two holes. The tee markers will be moved to different locations while the turf gets fully established. Once the tee boxes are ready for play again, we will move them back to their normal locations. BuNkerS - We will be sodding the faces of a number of our fairway and greenside bunkers through out the course in an effort to return them to their original flat bottom design. This will significantly reduce the washouts we typically experience after a heavy rain and in turn decrease the maintenance time required to prepare bunkers for play after heavy rains. It will also decrease the frequency of soil encroachment and sand contamination in the bunkers, which should prolong the playability and consisetncey of our bunkers. We thank you for your cooperation and patience as we continue to make improvements and repairs on the course. If you have any questions about course related items, please feel free to contact me. Gordon Williams, Golf Course Superintendant 9

12 CCWC NEWS The ladies who attended the wine tasting in March at Accent on Wine in Summerville had a lovely time. Plans are in the making for another fun time at Accent on Wine s location at Park Circle in Hanahan. 12 TENNIS ANYONE? Hi my name is William Wert. I'm originally from Oxford, MS but I've spent about half my life in the Summerville, SC area. I've been playing tennis since I was 13, and played high school tennis under coach Heinz Maurer, playing in multiple state playoffs. I previously played college tennis at the University of Mississippi. I have now been teaching tennis for 6 years, and have been certified by the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) for 2 years. I will be offering private lessons this summer at the Coosaw Creek Country Club tennis courts. Private lessons are available to anyone of any age (although I typically suggest 8yrs+) and focus on developing necessary skills, while keeping the emphasis on having fun. Lesson rates are $40 an hour for private instruction and hitting lessons (hitting lessons are for anyone who feels they have fully developed their strokes but would like to further develop their match play mentality). Group lessons are also available $20 an hour per person for 3+ people. I am available by appointment only and can be reached by phone at (843) or by at wrwtennis11@gmail.com.
