Club members represent SCA on KSCO radio Robyn McCool and Henry Bertram were on the air Wednesday March 11 from 7 to 8 p.m. on KSCO AM 1080 with Hour Local Sports Radio Show host Neil Pearlberg. They talked about local archery, Santa Cruz Archers, and DeLaveaga Archery Range among other things. Listeners called in during the show to ask questions or provide their perspective. Santa Cruz Traditional JOAD is starting off with a bang! Karen Williams Our Junior Olympic Archery Development (JOAD) club is open to kids ages 8 to 20. The USA Archery website explains that JOAD is a nationwide program of USA Archery that provides kids and teens with ongoing archery classes that help you progress from beginner to advanced level archery, at your pace. Learn to compete in tournaments of all different kinds, achieve goals in shooting skills, and earn achievement awards in archery! Instructors are Ian Garner and Karen Williams. To become a JOAD member, contact Karen at kewilliams1313@gmail.com, and then register at USA Archery at Our club name is Santa Cruz Traditional Archery. The first event will be Friday, March 13 at 7:30 p.m. for the 1st Quarter JOAD Indoor Mail-In tournament! The event is open to JOAD Members and interested parties. This official indoor JOAD round is 30 arrows, 10 ends at 18m, 40cm Vegas target face. Cost is $10. Come to the first get-together and learn more about the program and what it has to offer. Group lessons will be set up at a later date. To listen to the podcast or see more photos, search Facebook for Hour Local Sports Radio Show. MTBA Regional tournament at SCA on April 12 The MTBA Regional Field, Hunter, Animal tournament will be at Santa Cruz Archers on April 12. We have a lot of work to do to ensure the range is ready. This is an all hands on deck occasion for working members. Non-working members, if you have the time, please help out. The tasks are: Measure all shooting positions (field, hunter and animal stakes) and make sure they are correct and correctly marked (some need painting and numbering). Replace any soft bales. Re-band bales that are leaning or separating. Remove the ropes that are holding some bales back (the targets need to be flat against the backstops and unobstructed. Clear any brush that obstructs the shooting positions. Tyson and Terry have been slaving away at this. The range is in good shape. Target 12 needs a close encounter with the weed wrench. 2 scarchers@comcast.net

Indoor key changed To get the new key to indoor range, come to a club meeting or contact the Membership Chair at lr9698@gmail.com. Tons o fun at February Stump Shoot Larry Yien 2nd Vice President 7 recurve archers, 4 longbowmen, and 1 primitive archer took to the range on the last day of February, the 28th, of And I must say the shoot was awfully squirrelly, the reason being we shot all 3D squirrels otherwise known as rather LARGE gophers to Andy their creator. This was a day of bonuses and surprises as the organizer changed things around and made it a 2 arrow shoot. Believe you me that it doubled if not tripled the amount of fun we had. I must not proceed with my report till I acknowledge a tourist that joined in on our shoot: Arjarin from the Netherlands heard about our shoot, contacted Henry B., and bought a ticket to jump across the pond just to shoot with us at our range. Thanks Arjarin, and my apologies for misspelling your name. Dan Vermilyer shooting the signature under-the-tree shot. Another signature shot in Santa Cruz Archers is the uphill over the bank on top of a stump Marmot shot. Dan V. and Larry Y. at full draw as Steve H. puts pressure on his string. David Knight was the clear winner in Recurve, and the shoot off between Henry and Ted did show us that the recurves could miss. I was paying close attention to their tally but nodded off a couple of times. In the end Henry was victorious, but instead of a yell he just whimpered a thank God and Where s the food? Gabrielle readying to shoot her first arrow. We had many challenging shots out on the stumps, but this 3D squirrel thing is bringing our shoot to a whole new level as the foam critters are reactive to the shot and can and will literally jump through the air when hit. I d encourage you all to join in on our fun on the last Saturday of the month. Today did show some sprinkles but nothing that would drench our spirit. Marty and Dan were on fire in our longbow group they could not miss! The interesting trivia there is that Marty does not own a longbow and borrowed Dan s extra longbow; you could say that Dan s bows took 1 and 2 this season. Steve Hill saddles up on a madrone to shoot at vermin foam. 3 scarchers@comcast.net

Arjarin comes to full draw as Khaya and the rest of the longbow archers assess the vermin foam critters. Primitive bows touch upon the roots of archery, and I hope folks don t mind me showing up with my osage bamboo longbow I made, but I definitely want them represented at our shoots and hope that more primitive bows will show up. I know folks make them in Cody Dumont s class, and there are folks with primitive bows out there. Come on out! Recurve archers yelling Longbows Rule!" In closing, I d like to invite you to our organized shoots. Your membership dues and guest fees go into putting these shoots on, and it is one of the benefits of being a club member. This caliber shoot would value out at $10-$20, and it can all be had here at the local range for $5 guests and free for members. Dust off one of your stick bows and come have some fun with friends and fellow members. Next shoot is March 28th, last Saturday of the month, at 9 a.m. Dan V. will be hosting the shoot. Jack, Bruce, Arjarin, Ted, and Gabrielle pausing to take in the morning sun. My archery buddy Steve Hill contacted me and asked if there was a shoot on Saturday the 28th he just got a new longbow from Cody D. and wanted to get it tuned in. I called him back and let him know that there was. He said he wanted to put together a BBQ wild duck feed today after the shoot. He had me at wild duck! I want to thank Steve for adding some class and kindness back into our club. This was the perfect way for archers to visit after a fun morning of shooting. Steve Hill sharing the finer points of cooking wild duck over an open bed of coals, hot and fast! The stump shoot has been sporting 1st place prizes for archers in each bow classification; this month shows off a 5 star feast of wild duck cooked over oak coals, garlic infused butter into French bread, Steve Hill s famous beans, and some great snacks from David and Khaya Knight. I want to also thank Bruce Siegel for picking up the bread and butter, Marty for picking up pork and beans, and David and Khaya Knight for bringing bacon and garlic. 4 scarchers@comcast.net

BSA Venture Crew for archers age Young archers, male and female, ages 14-21, club members or not, are welcome to visit the crew shoot meetings currently being held the second and fourth Fridays at 6:00-7:30 p.m. at the indoor range. If you don't have your own gear, we have plenty of equipment to lend. To keep coming and go on outings with the crew, the new member cost is $25 for the year. The crew is planning an archery campout in July for the Mt. Madonna Bug Shoot. We will also be practicing for some of the SCA club shoots. Under age 14 youth may visit a crew shoot, with permission, but cannot join the crew until age 14. There will be two adult advisors/instructors present for all shoots and trips. For more information, contact Crew Advisor, Gabrielle Garrett, at gg4scouts@sbcglobal.net or (831) Let s rideshare to area shoots Denise Barr I am interested in coordinating people who want to share rides to area shoots either for one day or longer. If you are interested in participating, contact me at or chefdeedee@att.net. Here are some upcoming shoots: Mar. 15. Golden Arrow. Black Mountain Bowmen. San Jose, CA. Mar Cartoon Classic: Lodi Bowmen. Lodi, CA. Apr. 18. Traditional shoot. Bowhunters Unlimited. Cupertino. Apr. 19. Pacific Traditional Rendezvous. San Francisco Archers. Pacifica, CA. Remove invasive French broom As you hike through the range, please remove invasive nonnative Genista monspessulana (French broom). Invasive non-native plants can cause enormous changes in park ecosystems by out-competing native plants, polluting the gene pool of native plants through hybridization, and dramatically altering fire, water, and nutrient cycles. Additionally, nonnative plants are known to transmit diseases to native plants; non-native diseases can be much more devastating than native diseases because native resistance to these diseases is often very low. (National Park Service) Help plan our awards banquet! We are planning a club dinner and awards banquet in December. If you can help out, contact Gabrielle Garrett, at go2garrett@sbcglobal.net or (831) Subscribe to our list at scarchers@comcast.net

February Board meeting minutes Steve Andrews 2/17/ Members Present: Andy Sterbenz, Susan Bertram, Emery Parrish, Cindee Damron, Henry Bertram, Ben Rogers, Ian Garner, Lynn Rollins, Gabrielle Garrett, Jack Mills, Larry Yien, Erick Sturm, Mark Hersey, Steve Andrews Old business Instructors using the indoor range will be glad to make room for members wanting to use the indoor range New business 1. New indoor range lock is working well. Coast will be paid. There is no master set of keys for the Key Master. Key Master does not know what former officers have what keys. Key Master would like a cheap laptop to make a database for the keys. Andy s son no longer needs his, so Andy will contribute it to the cause. Do Not Duplicate should be on keys. Should change the locks on the equipment cage and animal shed. Should not change the locks on the equipment cage and animal shed. Instructors should teach members how to use equipment in the equipment cage. This leads to a discussion about repairing arrows, and the bow press. The bow press is quite old and should not be used, even by trained people, on newer bows. Supplies: are they for the members to use? Or for knowledgable members to repair club equipment? For now, hold off on re-locking the equipment cage and animal shed. 2. Facebook contacted Ian about using the range and instructors for a team building thing. (I forget how many people.) They would be in on a weekday and be gone after their catered lunch. Would need instructors, a porta potty service, and the caterer should pack out the trash. Do we have enough club equipment? Eric moves, Ben 2nds that Ian is approved to set this up on a Tuesday morning, cost to be determined by Ian. Unanimous approval. 3. The Team challenge will get rolling late March, on a Saturday not having an outdoor shoot, or a Wednesday evening. Yellow animal stakes, 14 targets, every other month, 1 day event. Proposal to give everyone who shoots a ticket, and at the end of season BBQ, give ticket, eat free. Need to keep a list of who got a ticket. Shoots will be free for now, will adjust as needed. Suggestion to add a cubs shoot from cub stakes line to description/rules. Would like to do ribbons or prizes. 4. Lynn asked if instructors would like their contact info on in the newsletter. She will contact instructors and ask, if so will put their contact info in the newsletter. 5. KSCO Sports Show asked Henry to come on to talk about archery. They would also like a woman to speak; Henry will ask Robin. Motion to adjourn by Henry, 2nd by Emery. Unanimous March meeting minutes Steve Andrews 3/3/ President s report (Andy Sterbenz) Thank yous to all who put on the Valentine s Day shoot. 1 st Vice President s report (Ian Garner) Flyers for local shoots are printed out and available on the counter by the phone. Not sure which are part of the MTBA club series. Check the records boards for some new records. The first aid kit has been restocked. The stove fan works very well. 2 nd Vice President s report (Larry Yien) Had a fun stump shoot, changed it up with two arrows rather than one, and Andy made up some gopher/vermin targets which were fun to shoot. Steve cooked a duck bbq lunch which was very good thank you Steve. Next Stump shoot 3/28. State hunting licenses start 6/1. Secretary s report (Steve Andrews) I will not be here for the April meeting. Treasurer s report (Susan Bertram) Club is solvent, no unforeseen issues. The treasurer asks instructors that if they have money to give the treasurer, please put it in an envelope with a note saying who and why. Thank you. Outdoor Range Captain s report (Mike Tracy and Steve Andrews) Work party this Saturday, my first one, be gentle. Always something to do. Indoor Range Captain s report (Jerry Granger and Cindee Damron) Cindee is the contact point for the porta potty services. If a problem is noted, please contact an officer who will get in touch with Cindee. 6 scarchers@comcast.net
