1 November Newsletter November 2014 Inside This Issue 1 Message from CEO 2 Community Netball 3 Umpire Development 4 Performance 5 Mystics Update 6 Upcoming Events Message from Julie Paterson, CEO The Northern Zone has been consulted with at a number of levels regarding the Whole of Netball Plan (WONP) with Netball New Zealand. It was great to see numerous centres attend the consultation evening held some weeks ago and further refinement has happened through the CEO national group meeting as well as the Community Netball and Performance Netball national meetings. The finished product will be released at the NNZ Council Meeting in February in Christchurch and I am sure you will all be as impressed as I have been with the clarity of strategy and prioritization as well as the really strong drive for alignment of the netball delivery system. Following on from this the Netball Northern Zone Board have recently drafted an updated strategic plan. The initial strategy implemented in 2013 was a very useful starting document, and we achieved a large number of the goals and objectives. With the WONP underway and the priorities in the plan starting to take shape, it was timely to update the Zone strategy and ensure that our priorities and timeframes were aligned with Netball NZ. We will be discussing the high points of the strategy at the Zone AGM in March. It is also really pleasing to see the number of quality athletes being selected in to the Northern Zone training squad again this year well done to you all. An exciting new programme is also underway for coach development and 13 coaches have been selected for the newly established Zone Performance Coach programme. In addition some of our top coaches in the Zone have been selected for the Netball NZ High Performance Coach programme - well done to everyone! Just to note: Closing dates for the Northern Zone office will be from midday on Friday 19 December and we reopen on Monday 5 January. A number of staff will be on leave for longer periods over the Christmas break as well. Have a great month Julie Paterson CEO
2 PAGE 2 Community Netball 100% of Netball Centres in our Northern Zone have rolled out the new NNZ Junior Netball Programme for Year 1 & 2 players We had to say a goodbye to our lovely Community Netball Manager Trish Wilcox this month. She is off to coach the International Welsh Netball team at the world cup next year. Her dedication to our Zone and her sense of humor will be truly missed. We wish her all the best in her next adventure. 100% of Netball Centres in our Northern Zone have rolled out the new NNZ Junior Netball Programme for Year 1 & 2 players. Papakura Netball Centre and AMI Netball North Harbour have now experienced the player centred progressive programme and will be ready for the larger participation numbers during our main season next year. Planning for 2015 is well underway; dates for workshops are being confirmed and our Zone has applied for funding for portable posts to support our Centres. We await the decision. Fingers crossed. Active in Schools Programme is currently being delivered throughout the Zone and it is pleasing to receive requests for the delivery of the programme From the east coast to the west coast, Netball Active in Schools delivery for term 4 sees Trina in Pouto, Aranga, Ruawai, Matarau and Motatau. Michele Wallace Centre Co-ordinator welcomes players and supporters to the Week 3 session on Shooting Tracey was yet again amazed at the level of skill with our young people ranging from Y1-Y8. Shadow is an 8 year old boy with Cerebral Palsy whom has been partaking in the Active in Schools Netball Programme and astonishes her with his tenacity and positivity with everything that is asked of him. It is so rewarding to see so many children enjoying the experience of learning Netball at East Tamaki Primary School. Silver Ferns Farm Kaipara Sports Awards were held on the 7 th of November. Naomi Peti-Joyce of Northern Wairoa Netball Centre was the Code winner for Netball. Congratulations to Stella Hokianga from Mangonui Netball Centre who was our Zone winner for the New World Volunteer Awards. Stella s commitment to grow, play and umpire netball within our Zone made her a top contender for this award. Congratulation Stella, your hard work and dedication is highly appreciated! Game time indoors at Papakura Netball Centre with Junior Co-ordinator Tina Morunga as support on court. Special congratulations to Taylor Gillard from Valley School in Pukekohe who won the 'Design-a-house' competition. Participants were encouraged to create a design to show support for one or all of the six countries playing FAST5 Netball; New Zealand, Australia, Jamaica, England, Malawi and South Africa. Each decorated house was voted on by the public via Facebook, the FAST5 Netball World Series website and all six FAST5 team captains. Rodney Leadership group members Tayla Rambrandt & Jemma Mcpherson competed in the Barfoot & Thompson win your class to the fast 5 competition and came in 2 nd. Congratulations girls, the Rodney Netball Centre Leadership crew and all of their supporters. Peter Thompson, Managing Director, presenting Taylor with her free tickets and prize pack

Over 300 children a day experience seven codes of sport. This is a fantastic opportunity enabling us to engage with the children and to link them to their local Netball Centre to increase participation. Trina Henare and Tracey Spence (Northern Zone NDO s) were able to participate in Counties Manukau Sport Expo engaging with 20 schools looking to plan their Sports Calendar for 2015 this was a well-run event by Lincoln Jefferson from Counties Manukau Sport. This is an exciting new initiative focusing on developing Performance Coaches from within our Zone using the expertise of Noeline Taurua and key personnel from Unitec. The Northern Zone Performance Coach programme is designed to work alongside Netball New Zealand s Performance Coach Award and aims to add value to the education the coaches receive through the National programme. 5 Mystics Update A lot has been going on with the Mystics team as some athletes are ramping up, to carry out some individual challenges and some easing off, to gather some down time before things get busy again. Some achievements to note: PAGE 5 Good luck to Laura doing the Tin Man half Ironman in December in Tauranga and Maria in the Rangitoto challenge. Huge congratulations to Laura, Cat, Tem, Kayla, Camilla (NZA) and Serena on the international netball you have played. Awesome displays of resilience and pushing through some tough stuff. You were all brutal in going after the win and while it didn't come to some your effort had huge merit. You all took on the game and showed great respect for the heritage of the Silver Fern and England netball. Paula, Nadia and Sulu congratulations on a 12 week grind and challenge in the boxing ring. Katherine Coffin took on the Bike the Bridge challenge and while she went off course; she did it and beat the Breakers boys. Elsa ran the 70th Round the Bridges 12km run and for someone who hasn t conquered that distance before finished strongly showing great investment in conditioning for the season. You all represented the Mystics with huge pride and have gone places you or any of us have never been before. Chris, our team manager left Netball NZ on Friday after 20 years working for Netball NZ. An amazing achievement and enduring service to our beautiful game. Our sport survives through people like yourself who are passionate, dedicated and committed to seeing netball advance. How fortunate we are to have you full time with Mystics and what an amazing example to our team of giving and tenacity. Katherine Coffin on her bike during the bike bridge challenge!! Best wishes to the following sisters for their upcoming challenge: Maria on her outrigger around Rangitoto challenge and our Laura didn't read the fine print, and is now doing the Tin Man half Ironman in December in Tauranga. Best luck we are with you all the way! We have to give ourselves the best possible chance to be in the best shape at any stage of the season and what I have seen is massive effort and people prepared to work.
