1 Netball Northern Zone Newsletter Inside this issue Message from Julie Paterson July 2016 Yesterday saw the final game of the ANZ Championship play out. It was fiercely 1 Message from CEO fought game, but of course disappointing that once again there was no NZ team 2 Community Netball playing. I have loved every minute of being involved in this Trans-Tasman 3 Coach Development competition but also recognise that it hasn t achieved the targets initially set, 4 Umpiring especially around increasing broadcast numbers in NZ and new $$ from Australia. 5 Performance The new NZ elite competition has secured ANZ as the naming right sponsor 6 Mystics Update which is fantastic news for our sport, and our own SKYCITY Mystics sponsors are also very positive about the new competition. I am looking forward to seeing the New Zealand style of game-play be re-energised and am also very confident that the development structure that now sits under our Elite Competition will have a very positive impact on the depth and quality of players for our future. We are very excited to appoint Helene Wilson as our Head Coach for We have been fortunate to continue to have CAP programme support to allow Helene to take a full-time role in our zone. This will allow for strong continuity and connection with all of the programmes for coach and athlete development leading to the SKYCITY Mystics. Helene and I are working through player contracting now, and are required to have a team of 10 named by early September. We will keep you all posted! Best wishes to you all as you come towards the latter end of your season, I hope the wet weather hasn t impacted too much! Julie Paterson, CEO Netball Northern Zone

2 Community Netball Manager It s been a very wet and windy month of netball, both regionally and nationally. Some competitions have been cancelled because of the heavy rain and blustering winds, which for a staunch Netball community is uncharacteristic. Well done to all those who contributed and played at the New Zealand Age Group Representative Tournaments. You will find more detail on the results later in this communication. Membership Thank you for your patience during the membership collection period. The final numbers are in and the Zone membership figures remain flat, with a 0.18%. We will need to wait until the end of the year to see how our overall membership tracks for One notable achievement is the 113% increase reported by Kaipara Netball Centre. Kaipara have more than doubled their playing numbers from 2015, by introducing a senior women s and mixed winter competition. Congratulations to Mili and the Kaipara Netball Executive for all your hard work over the past 12 months to achieve this. I am looking forward to seeing it all in action next weekend Well done! Health and Safety Recently, we updated and netbalised a Health and Safety template for a smaller netball centre, with only one staff member. For those of you who need to update your policies this is a good template and may be easily adopted. You will need to view this through Dropbox - If you don t already have Dropbox downloaded please follow this link to set it up Don t be daunted by the size. Most of the document is a home for reporting templates. The body isn t that extensive but covers all relevant points. Please contact me if you would like me to come and help you with this. tia.winikerei@netballnorthern.co.nz. Ngā mihi - Tia Northern KIWISPORT ACTIVE IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM In partnership with Sport Northland, the Kiwisport Netball Active in Schools Program is in full swing. We have delivered to schools in the Whangarei, Kaipara, Northern Wairoa and Wellsford areas during Term 2. As we move to Term 3 we are fully booked with more schools wanting to take up this program. One highlight is that we have been able to use the Active in Schools programme as a platform to promote the 5v5 and 6v6 game at many interschool winter challenges and sports days. REPRESENTATIVE TOURNAMENTS Congratulations to Whangarei and Northern Wairoa who had teams playing at regional and national age group tournaments. We acknowledge the hard work and support of committees, whanau, parents, carers and community to ensure these athletes have the chance to compete. These are great opportunities not only for the athletes, but also for coaches and umpires who gain valuable experiences from attending national tournaments. Jo Hona and Trina Henare Far and Mid North Netball Development Officers Southern This month my highlight was attending the U15 National Tournament in Taranaki. I enjoyed watching and supporting the many coaches in the great work you do. Congratulations to all the coaches, managers and support staff who collectively contributed to some outstanding results.

This is in its infancy, but it already looks very exciting. NNZ will be announcing the new format and what is involved in the near future. Netball North Harbour s Student Advance Programme is proving to be a real success. Here is an excerpt from an that Annie Sadlier wrote with regards to the wonderful student coaches she has on the programme: Hi All, The girls in the advance student coach programme were observed last night and I just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how impressive they were. It was an absolute pleasure to see how well the girls were doing and how much they have improved as coaches. What was most noticeable was how different the journey each of them were on. One coach has a team that is winning everything easily, one has a team that is yet to record a win and the other has a team that has mixed results. Yet, all the coaches had the same positive attitude and belief in their players, all demonstrated a love for the game and a focus on their team, with a positive learning environment evident across the board. These girls are amazing and the game and schools are lucky to have their passion and contribution.

Over the years this tournament has continued to grow, it is a fantastic opportunity for umpires to get their first taste of a tournament situation, they are able to experience different styles of netball which in turn assist them with their own development on their journey to higher honours. The northern zone centres where well represented by 16 teams and umpires who all performed well. Samantha Frances gaining her Zone award at the tournament. Avary Patutama appointed to the A Grade Final. Angela Newton & Fleur Hunter - Northern zone umpire coaches Performance Beko Observations 2016 The Beko Netball League has just completed its first year as the premier amateur netball competition in NZ and the feedback has been extremely positive. The Beko Netball League will grow to become a vital part of the pathway to the elite level for all involved as it provides an important step in the development of athletes, coaches, team managers, strength & conditioning coaches, physios, mental skills trainers and administrators. The first year of Beko Netball League was not all smooth sailing there were a few challenges along the way for all involved which we tried hard to overcome throughout 2016 and plan to rectify in Some of the challenges are difficult to find solutions for e.g. the impact on clubs with multiple players in the Beko squad, trying to get Beko players playing club netball on a regular weekly basis if not selected in Beko squad is hard with club netball played on different nights during the week, just to name a couple. The tricky part of the Beko programme is that it sits in the middle of many different programmes including, club, school, Mystics, U21 s, so trying to balance everything is a huge juggling act. At present I am doing a review of the programme and getting feedback from the Beko athletes, coaches, management and support staff as well as Centres and Clubs who had players involved in the programme. This information will be collated and used to enhance the Beko programme for 2017.

5 I was extremely proud of the entire Beko squad, coaches- Helene Wilson & Julie Kelman-Poto, Team Manager- Meghan Wales, Physio- Itabera Iererua, and Strength & Conditioning Coach- Mark Mete for their unconditional support to the programme and huge dedication to ensure the programme was a success in its first year. Being part of this programme is a huge commitment and takes a lot of time away from family and loved ones all the while working or studying full-time. Helene Wilson Appointed the new SKYCITY Mystics Head Coach With a new competition starting at the elite level in 2017 a new Head Coach will be leading the SKYCITY Mystics, with Helene Wilson being appointed as Head Coach. Its hugely exciting for the Northern Zone to have a coach from our Zone who has come through the pathway and coached at all levels now coaching our elite team. Helene brings a huge amount knowledge and experience to the role with her professional background as an Athlete Life Advisor at High Performance Sport NZ and obviously her coaching knowledge and experience which she has gathered over many years. Helene starts in the role at the beginning of August and will hit the ground running as she starts to put her squad together for the coming 2017 season. We wish Helene all the best in her new role! Good Results at U19 s The National U19 tournament in Nelson was hugely successful for our Centre U19 teams with 4 teams (Waitakere 3 rd, North Harbour 5 th & Papakura 6 th ) finishing in the top 6 including Auckland competing in the final with eventual winners Wellington. We had 7 players selected in the U19 tournament selection, including 16-year-old Theresa Ngata from North Harbour. 8 SKYCITY Mystics Update The SKYCITY Mystics netball season came to an end on 10th July when we lost our ANZ Championship NZ Elimination Final against the WBOP Magic at Claudelands Arena, Hamilton. Sadly, this meant we said farewell to Head Coach, Debbie Fuller who has been with the team since 2009 as Assistant Coach before moving on to become Head Coach in 2011 to 2016 (taking a sabbatical year from coaching in 2013). The 2016 ANZ Championship season got off to a promising start with the SKYCITY Mystics winning the ANZ Championship Pre Season Shootout at The Trusts Arena in March. However, the team were quickly plagued with injuries at the outset of the season, with a number of starting players sustaining injuries in pre-season matches and having to sit out several games or be restricted to playing only one or two quarters for some time. However, this gave coach Debbie Fuller the opportunity to play some of the newbies in the team and when these players got the opportunity, they certainly took to the court with the energy and determination of a seasoned player. The SKYCITY Mystics are proud to say that every player in the 2016 team had an opportunity to take to the court this year! Congratulations to three of our youngest players, Holly Fowler, Fa amu Ioane and Michaela Sokolich-Beatson who have been selected in the NZU21 team tour to Australia beginning 7th August. We hope to see these players progress with the NZU21 team and be selected for the NZU21 team to participate in the Netball World Youth Championships Gaborone 2017 (Botswana) which will be held 8 16 July The attention for many of the players now turns to national selection ahead of the 2016 Quad Series with the first event taking place at Vector Arena on Saturday 27th August. Five members of the current SKYCITY Mystics team have been named to trial for the Silver Ferns later this month Kayla Cullen, Maria Tutaia, Cathrine Tuivaiti, Anna Harrison & Fa amu Ioane. The SKYCITY Mystics celebrated the end of season in style last Friday night at SKYCITY s Bar TwentyOne and what a great night it was. We were pleased to present the following awards: SKYCITY MVP Award: Barfoot & Thompson People s Choice Award: Hira Bhana Team Personality Award: Cathrine Tuivaiti Anna Harrison Serena Guthrie
