Netball Northern Newsletter May 2014 We welcome two new staff members to the Northern Zone this month. Thanks to the Oxford Trust &Sport Northland Kiwisport, we have been able to increase over support to the Northern Centres and schools by a further 20 hours and split the role to ensure we are spending less time on the road and more time providing hands on support. So I welcome Jo and Trina! I m sure everyone in the netball community will be delighted as we are to have you join our team The 2014 Northern Mystics seasons has drawn to a close with our team finding their best form in their last two games. It is interesting that our three best winning and most exciting games this season were against Australian teams at home. While we didn t reach the top 4 this season out final games certainly showed we have the team who can do this and we are working hard to retain consistency through the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Our team has made substantial improvements on 2013 and will continue to build on this platform for the following years.

Marketing With the end of the 2014 season now here, it is a quick turn-a-round to 2015 already! We are preparing the membership programme for 2015, as well as reviewing our brand positioning and brand strategy. As part of that we have undertaken some high level membership research with the league but will also be sending out some more detailed researched to our members. Look out for that over the next few weeks. The Mystics facebook site is proving to be incredibly popular with an increase of over 25% of followers, over the season and ranks with the third highest in support over the league. We hope you all liked the player The feedback has been on the whole really positive and we hope these have added support to your own positive messaging at games.

Junior Netball Game on the season has started with a hiss and a roar. The junior netball courts are fill of children with smiling faces, enthusiastic Star Helpers and Yr 3 & 4 Coaches and the side line is happily noisy with parents and spectators applauding good play. Centres report they have an increase in players and some are having trouble with the logistics of getting all the teams out on court. What an absolutely positive problem to deal with. It would be a good time now that the season is underway to start thinking about the 2015 season and the logistics required to cope with the increase in numbers. Some Centres may have to consider splitting age groups onto different days of the week in order to manage. Consult with your community this year in preparation for next year. To date we have 366 trained Junior Co-ordinators, Yr. 3 & 4 Coaches and Yr. 1 & 2 Star Helpers within our Zone. It has been an extremely hectic few months getting around the Centres in preparation for the season but we have met some wonderful people along the way. There has been many laughs as we have put the activities into action during workshops and great sharing of ideas or experiences with Junior Netball. Previously apprehensive helpers/coaches have set off two feet taller confident and excited with the season ahead of them. The involvement of our Leadership Groups with the Junior Programme has been encouraging and we are lucky to have such dedicated young people giving back to their community and helping their Centres. The success of this new NNZ Junior Netball programme at your Centre, usually relies on the efforts and energy of a few committed volunteers. National Volunteer Week is held during June each year, and you may like to use this special week to acknowledge and recognise their contribution. You may also like to nominate them for a Lotto NZ Volunteers award through Sport NZ. This year Junior Netball is a priority for Netball New Zealand s Community Netball Plan, so it is an appropriate time to acknowledge the contribution of our volunteers involved with the absolute grassroots of Netball. We would love to hear your stories or receive photos throughout the season. We intend to return to all Centres to see your wonderful work in action and observe the skill development and enjoyment of the modified games with your young players..

Keep up the good work everyone, these are excellent results for so early in the season.

Coaches Selected for Sport NZ s Performance Coach Advance Programme Two coaches, Kiri Wills and Trish Wilcox have been selected from the Netball Northern Zone to be part of Sport NZ s newly formed Performance Coach Advance Programme. All coaches selected to be part of the programme went through a very stringent selection process which involved written applications being submitted and then and one on one interviews were conducted with the candidates and Sport NZ personnel. Performance Coach Advance will cover key areas of coach development including athlete development, coach self-development, the coaching process, leadership, planning /programme management and insights into the difference between Performance and High Performance coaching. A range of development platforms will be used including development of Personal Development Plans (PDPs) for each coach, an interactive workshop series, mentoring, special full day forums, in field feedback for coaches and the opportunity to observe high performance coaches in action. While PCA is a national programme, each regional programme will be designed and adapted to meet the needs of the selected coaches in that region. Netball Northern Zone U23 s Play WBOP The Netball Northern Zone U23 s travelled down to Cambridge on Sunday, May 18 to play two games against the Waikato Bay of Plenty U23 s. The games were played at Cambridge High School and was the first time both teams and also the umpires had played under the new rules being trialled at U19 s and U23 s. The day was hugely successful although the first game was dominated by WBOP and in particular former Mystics player Malia Paseka, who shot outstandingly and took full advantage of the new 2 point shot. The second game was a lot closer and as the Northern Zone players settled into their games plans and started to show how well they could play. It was a fantastic opportunity for our players to play against high quality opposition as there were 5 contracted Magic players in the WBOP U23 team. The U23 s next game is against the Singapore U21 team who is touring the North Island starting on Monday, May 26, the game is taking place on Wednesday, May 28 at the Auckland Netball Centre starting at 7pm. Then on Saturday, May 31 team travels to Wellington to play in a warm up tournament which involves Netball Mainland, Netball Central and Netball WBOP. Talent Identification in the Northern Zone - Centre Talent Spotters It s a fact that the Northern Zone possess a huge number of talented athletes and many of these athletes get identified at an early age and are selected in tournament teams and tend to be selected throughout their age group representative years in many other tournament selection teams and squads. Due to the size and the talent pool within our Zone we need to ensure we are identifying a larger pool of athletes based on other factors and not just relying on Talent Selection to identify our talented athletes. It s also important to ensure athletes from smaller Centres and out-reach areas in our Zone know that they can be identified and they are not disadvantaged due to where they live or

where they play. So the core purpose of having Centre Talent Spotters is to ensure that we are widening our Talented Identification search to increase the pool of talented athletes and have a longitudinal focus. Talent Selection vs. Talent Identification In many sports there is a major focus on Talent Selection and not a huge focus placed on Talent Identification. But what is the difference? Talent Selection describes the selection of athletes with the current ability to participate and be successful in events taking place in the near future. Talent Identification on the other hand, is the prediction of future performance based upon an evaluation of current physical, technical, tactical and psychological qualities. The objective is to have each Centre in the Northern Zone nominate a key person or people to be Talent Spotters for their Centre who will focus on Talent Identification. Depending on the size of the Centre there may just be one person, but in the bigger Centres there may be up to 3 or 4 Talent Spotters nominated. Further Information will be sent out to the Centres in the Northern Zone regarding the Talent Spotters and this topic will also be discussed at the Northern Zone High Performance Meeting which is taking place at Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre on Thursday, May 29. It is hoped that this concept will be implemented before the first Centre Rep tournament takes place. Title Subtitle TYPE TAGLINE HERE IN THIS ISSUE
