1 Netball Northern Zone Newsletter July 2015 Inside this issue 1 Message from CEO 2 Performance 3 Community Netball 4 Coach Development 5 Umpire Development 6 Upcoming events Message from Julie Paterson, CEO Apologies for the late delivery of the newsletter for July. It has been an incredibly busy few weeks, with player contracting coming to a finish, budget preparation underway, submissions required for the Auckland Council Unitary plan, attending the inaugural Northland Sport Coalition meeting, meeting with council regarding future plans for facility development, sponsorship and team reviews of 2015, National Chair, CEO, Community and Performance manager meetings, supporting the Silver Ferns Test, as well as planning already well underway for the 2016 SKYCITY Mystics season! Phew busy, but as always really positive and lots of fantastic support being shown for netball through both community funders as well as local government. Tia mentioned in the community report that the Netball Northern Zone has been acting on behalf of the Auckland Council based netball centres and placing and supporting submissions to the proposed changes to the Unitary plan on noise and lighting control. The Netball Northern Zone was then selected as one of the sports to present a verbal submission to the hearing held on Monday 3 August, along with four other sports and Sport New Zealand. Tia and I sat through a full day of hearings which enabled us to gain a better understanding of the process. No outcome was decided on the day, but we will update any of those centres who may be affected by any change as soon as we are able to. Congratulations to all of the teams who competed in recent tournaments. The Northern Zone had fantastic results across all of tournaments and it is exciting to see so much talent coming through. We are all now in a much better position to be putting consistently excellent development programmes in place throughout the Zone, and starting to see the results of this. Hamish has been appointed to a working group established by Netball New Zealand to formulate a new national high performance strategy something we are all very much looking forward to.

2 New Zealand Age Groups U19 & U23 Championships New Zealand Age Groups (U19 & U23) was held at the Trust Arena on 6 9 July With more than 250 Netballers on court there was some great netball on display throughout the four days Undefeated all week, Northern Under 23 s went on to win the U23 Championship. Ahead by six at halftime; some impressive shooting by Maia Wilson (34/40 at 85%) could barely be faulted. The defensive effort by Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick and Holly Fowler throughout the week was a standout, with Tone-Fitzpatrick named Defender of the Tournament. In the Under 19 final between North Harbour and Dunedin, an exhilarating finish had North Harbour supporters on their feet with just one goal separating the teams as the clock ticked down to fulltime. With scores even heading into the final minute, North Harbour held their nerve hanging on for the win. Northern U23 Team Netball North Harbour U19 Team Final U23 Placings Northern 2. South 3. WBOP 4. 5 Community Netball What a great month it s been! Tournament fever across the Zone and nationally. Northern has achieved outstanding results across the board, both in a performance and participation. The brilliant performance of the North Harbour U19 team in defeating Dunedin in the final and then the Northern Zone U23 victory speak for themselves. Waitakere U19s also achieved a great result, finishing 3rd. At U15 level, seeing teams HPNC Otara Scorpians and Northern Wairoa making it to their first national tournament in Taranaki is exciting and provides more opportunity for more players, coaches and officials. And congratulations to Auckland U17s for winning their nationals. What an exciting future Northern Zone has. One of the highlights of my month was going to the Kerikeri Rep tournament. As excepted they turned on a beautiful sunny day and what a privilege to see the talent from the North. Netball Waitakere has enthusiastically agreed to host the inaugural ANZfutureFERNS Zone Festival day on September 6 between 11am and 1pm. This netball celebration is an opportunity for young aspiring Silver Ferns (Year 1-4), and their families to join in the fun. There will be a variety of stations to try out ANZfutureFERNS games and skills. Irene van Dyke will be there and there are plenty of goodies for the children that come and participate. Wear training clothes (runners, t/shirt and shorts) and bring a drink bottle filled with water. You can register online by following this link or simply turn up on the day. We have also been working on some very important submissions for the Auckland region. These relate to the proposed Unitary Plan and noise controls that Auckland Council want to place over sport participation. The noise restrictions proposed for recreation and sport participation will affect how we can deliver netball now and in the future. We joined with a host of national, regional and local sporting bodies to petition the Council to change their position so that organised sport including Netball can continue to grow and flourish. I will keep those who are most urgently affected updated as more information becomes available. Nga mihi Tia ANZfutureFerns Thank you to Hibiscus Coast, Netball Rodney and AMI Auckland Netball Centres for implementing a Year 5 & 6 Pilot. These willing players, parents, coaches, umpires, staff and volunteers will help shape the future game format for the ANZfutureFERNS Year 5 & 6 grade. In 2013 six of our Northern Zone Netball Centres (fourteen Centres in total across New Zealand) piloted changes to the Year 1 4 Junior Netball Programme with great success and as a result the new ANZfutureFERNS Year 1 & 2 and Year 3 & 4 programmes were rolled out. The evaluation plan will include views of the children taking part in the new modified versions of the game (5 v 5, 6 v 6 or 7 v 7) and feedback from adults involved with and observing the pilot. AUT will also provide some quantitative data from the filming of the games to assist in deciding which game is best for this age group. Netball New Zealand will roll out the changes to the Year 5 8 games in Year 5 & 6 Pilot 6 v 6 modified game being played at Hibiscus Coast Netball Centre with players who usually play 7 v 7.

6 Northland Kerikeri Netball Centre hosted their New World JMB Tournament, followed by their inaugural BARFOOT & THOMPSON Representative Tournament. Many thanks to Mangonui; Bay of Islands; Whangarei; Northern Wairoa & Hibiscus Coast who travelled to attend. The day was full of awesome games and visits from Jan our Zone Umpire Coordinator and Tia our Zone Community Manager. The Far North District Council have begun the tender process for the Court development at Bay of Islands Netball Centre all very exciting and focused on increasing participation. ANZfutureFerns Programme continues in all of our Centres even with the weather disruptions. Many thanks to all our Star Helpers and Junior Coordinators Ana (Mangonui); Whaea Meri (BOI) and Karyn & Jodi (Kerikeri) for their awesome effort in delivering our programme not to forget our many Year 1-4 s for bringing their vibe each Saturday. Congratulations to those umpires who have been awarded their Zone Badge for Umpiring over the past few months. Leah is currently running the Zone Theory classes in Kerikeri for the up and coming exam in August. It is really exciting to see many of our umpires taking the next step to enhance their skills which in turn will enhance the play within our areas. Congratulations to many of our Coaches who have completed their Community Coaching Awards. Please feel free to contact your Coaching Coordinator within your Centre for upcoming modules & dates. UNISS 2015 is fast approaching and this year we welcome Whangaroa College who is entering for the first time and like Kaitaia College, Kerikeri High School & Bay of Islands College they are busy fundraising, planning and training for the upcoming event. Whangarei Netball Centre sent a U15 Rep Team down to New Plymouth to compete at the U15 Championships. They produced some good results and finished 10th in B Grade. They also competed in the U17 team National Age-Group Championships where they finished 15th overall. Congratulation to all those involved. Northern Wairoa Netball Centre sent for the very first time an U15 Team to the U15 Championships and came in 10th in C Grade. They really enjoyed being able to bench mark themselves against other teams from all over the North Island. Dargaville Primary School hosted a mini modified sports day where they played neighboring schools in RippaRugby, the ANZfutureFerns 5v5 game and modified soccer. This was a brilliant day all kids really enjoying the activities. Maromaku Primary School also hosted a mini modified sports day hosting over 10 primary schools; most of who have participated in the Active in Schools program. Northland Rugby and Sport Northland along with Netball Northern Zone facilitated the day which was a huge success. We look forward to 2016 and being part of this day again.
