Netball Northern Zone Inside this issue Message from Julie Paterson, CEO June Message from CEO 2 Community Netball 3 Coach Development 4 Umpire Development 5 Performance 6 Mystics Update 7 Upcoming events I cant believe another month has flown by. We have all been extremely busy both with the completion of the ANZC season, and immediately at the end of the season, the re-contracting of the SKYCITY Mystics team. Community netball is in full swing, and in addition to this there has been a lot of work going in to preparing the U23 team for the upcoming age group tournament. Good luck to all of the teams preparing to compete - both to the Northern U19 teams and the Helene Wilson led Northern Zone U23 s. It will be an exciting tournament and we are all looking forward to seeing our young talent on the courts. I have been very proud of the SKYCITY Mystics this season. The past two years have been very challenging for everyone involved. At the end of the 2014 season a further very robust review was undertaken, and some very clear areas of improvement were identified. It has been very exciting to see those goals come to fruition and to see the changes made both on and off the court to meet those goals. The result has been a top 4 placing in the ANZC, and the SKYCITY Mystics not losing to a NZ team in the round robin, a first for our team. We still have work to do, but every year is a vast improvement on the year before, and that s what we ask of the athletes and management team constant improvement. Exciting times looking forward to 2016!! I hope to see you at the Age Group Tournament starting on the 6th of July. Julie Paterson, CEO
Community Netball It s been great to get out to some of the representative tournaments in the past couple of weeks. I have had the opportunity to watch many of your teams and it is a pleasure being there to absorb the talent, skill and promise of these players. I also wish to acknowledge the hard work of the coaches, managers, umpires and administrators who make representative netball a possibility. All the best to those travelling to National tournament over the holidays. I look forward to seeing the results as they come in. Thank-you to everyone who has worked with me on finalizing the membership returns for the first part of the year. I know this is not a small task and I am grateful for the speedy response I have received. Finally, we will be sending out some more Keep Calm and Let the Children Play signage. It has reminded me about the impact that poor sideline behavior can have on our children. It is so destructive and affects their confidence and willingness to play sport. The responsibility to educate people about what inappropriate side-line behavior is, rests with all of us. I would be keen to hear how you are managing this in your Centre. Kia ora Tia ANZfutureFERNS 650 people have attended the ANZfutureFERNS workshops to date this season. Discussion and feedback at the workshops strongly support the new programme for our young players. Evaluations report the workshops have been of great benefit to them as a Star Helper or Year 3 & 4 Coach. Confident and capable coaches, with support from trained Junior Co-ordinators, leads to improved opportunities for skill development and enjoyment of netball. A few friendly reminders now that the season is underway; Only one Star Helper or Year 3 & 4 Coach per team on court. Good to have keen adults around but sometimes they block the vision of the players and confuse them with so many different instructions. Our friendly Hoop Holders need to be reminded to hold the hoop higher above the players heads so the players are able to develop the technique of shooting from above their head. Suggest they only lift the hoop up when the players come close to their end of the court, so they don t get tired arms and lower the hoop. In the interest of player safety please check the length of fingernails and have all jewellery (including earrings, bands and hair ties around wrists) are removed prior to the start of the game. Kaipara Netball Centre on a sunny winter s morning Year 1 & 2 Ball Skills Passing Challenge Year 3 & 4 Warm-up for all teams lead by a Junior Coordinator Yr 3 & 4 Game time It s all action. A Leadership Coach encourages the correct shooting technique to his player.
Active in Schools This is proving to be a very popular program with our Northland Schools. Working closely with our Netball Centres and Sport Northland we have engaged seven schools this term: Maunu Primary, Tangiteroria, Moerewa, Kawakawa, Tangowahine and Maromaku schools. It is great to see the schools support the delivery of fundamental skills to their students. We look forward to Term 3 delivery and getting more kids involved in our sport. Northland Mangonui s local primary schools took an even share of the spoils as various titles went up for grabs at the Kiwi Netball Field Days tournament last month. Abundant Life School prevailed in the Year 5-6 grade final over Ahipara 13-4; and Pompallier Catholic School took out the Year 7-8 title over Taipa Area School The annual Riders Sports Depot tournament, organised by Sport Northland and the Far North Primary Schools Principals Association, again took place at the Mangonui Netball Centre courts over two days; with the Year 5-6 and 7-8 matches played on Thursday, May 21, while the Year 1-2 and 3-4 competitions were completed the following Thursday, May 28. Lesley Wallace, from Sport Northland, noted there was less emphasis placed on results in the youngest age grades as these were aligned to the ANZfutureFERNS, where there was a strong focus on having fun. Y1 Hurupaki Pink team Bay of Islands & continue to deliver ANZfutureFERNS and completed games last Saturday in stormy & cold weather. held their 1 st Representative Tournament on Sunday 27 th June. There are 22 teams registered and were looking forward to hosting you all. Whangarei (WNC) is a hive of activity every Saturday. It s great to see the enjoyment of the children and their families involved with ANZfutureFERNS. This is going really well with 32 x Y1 & 2 and 18 x Y3 & 4 teams Judy Macdonald (Y1 & 2) and Sue Robertson (Y3 & 4) co-ordinate the programme. On 20/21 June was the end of preliminary round and championship round started on 26/27 June, along with promotion relegation. Competition is close in some intermediate, senior and college grades. WNC s four new netball courts are progressing well and the outside toilet block is having a major re-vamp including wheelchair access. These upgrades should be finished by the school holidays. WNC has 5 rep teams this year (Y7 to U/17). All teams played at AMI Auckland and performed well, especially with a 5.30am departure. The U17 team was runner up to Waitakere losing in the final. A very credible performance. Recently four WNC members completed their Community Coach Award. Congratulations to Amie Pooley, Dee Telfer, Mo Matautia and Ravena Otene. Hannah Turner and Gladys Himiona have both passed their Umpire Zone theory and five recently sat NZ Theory. Our Umpire co-ordinator Sue Robertson has been very busy conducting umpire courses, with approximately 80 people attending her classes.
Southern Counties Manukau Sport Netball Tournaments Tracey, our Southern Netball Development Officer, had the pleasure of attending the Y5-6 MOSA Tournament organised by Counties Manukau and held at Mangere Otahuhu Netball Centre. The tournament was well-run and the standard of talented players was very exciting. 15 schools attend and their placings are listed below: Year 5 Final Standings: 1. Mangere Bridge 2. Mangere East 3. Viscount 4. St Mary MacKillop 5. Koru 6. Southern Cross 7. Nga Iwi 8. Jean Batten 9. Mountain View 10. Favona 11. Otahuhu & Al Madinah 12. Robertson Road &Panama Road 13. Otahuhu Tracey also had the pleasure of endorsing the ANZfutureFERNS Junior Netball Programme Y1-2 and Y3-4 at Otara Scorpions Netball Club on Saturday morning. Well done Mate and Katy, your star helpers and Y3-4 coaches are providing an engaging and nurturing environment for young players to develop. There s such great community support and it s fantastic to see some new faces helping out behind the scenes. Well done Howick Pakuranga Netball Centre in continuing to support our Club with umpire development. It was that popular we hear you had to turn people away due to not enough space! Keep up the good work. The children pictured below have been part of the Zone Active in Schools and ANZfutureFERNS programme. From that, they entered 5 teams in our competition this season amazing support from the Otara community. Fantastic work Yendarra.
Manurewa Netball Centre Thankfully the weather held off for the Manurewa ANZfutureFerns endorsement on Saturday 20 June. It was fantastic to see the newly appointed Junior Co-Ordinators Italia Tipelu and Brenda Nathan. The new courts/markings and goal posts are a credit to all involved and the hard work carried out behind the scenes has paid off. What an environment for our community to enjoy!! Happy faces from the Pukekohe Representative Tournament Papakura U15 Team won their section playing in the final against Hamilton East Girls. Tertiary Partnerships Te Wananga o Aotearoa and Unitech We have been working with the sports departments at Te Wananga o Aotearoa, West Auckland and Unitech, Carrington to build stronger and more meaningful partnerships. Recently, we delivered NNZ coaching modules to their Year 1 and 2 students, which was then followed up with coach observation and mentoring. We anticipate that this will provide Netball coach support to the local Centres, clubs and schools. On the left, Zone Coach Developer Tania Heap with Eloise Blackwell (former Aztec 1, Super 12, NPC Rugby and Black Fern). Eloise teaches the Youth Guarantee Sport programme at Te Wananga o Aotearoa.
Coach Development Earlier this month we delivered the NNZ Fit for the Season to Papakura Netball Centre Representative Players and Coaches. There were well over 100 participants. Everyone got involved and learnt all about Warm Ups, Cool Down, Hydration, Recovery and the different Fitness Components. It was a great night. It was great to get out to Waiuku and deliver Ball Skills to their Representative Players and Coaches. We covered peripheral vision, placement and accuracy of the ball, deception of the pass, and a variety of passes. The players were then given home work to create their own netball ball skill activity to bring to their next training. Recently, we spent two weekends in the Far North. First at and then Mangonui delivering NNZ Community Coach Award Modules. The response was fantastic and congratulations to all those who achieved this award. 8 Performance Netball Northern Zone U23 Team Preparation With one week to go before the National U23 Tournament starts, the Netball Northern Zone U23 Team is working hard and preparing to be at their best! The team had their last pre-tournament hit out earlier this month playing games against WBOP U23 s and Central U23 s at an event held at Auckland Netball Centre. The tournament was hugely successful for the Northern Zone team which included the four selected Sky City Mystics players (Katherine Coffin, Temalisi Fakahokotau, Sulu Tone-Fitzpatrick and Nadia Loveday) who have been integrated into the team after the completion of a successful ANZC campaign. The results were as follows- Northern U23 s- 56 BEAT WBOP U23 s- 54 WBOP U23 s- 59 BEAT Central U23 s- 50 Northern U23 s- 64 BEAT Central U23 s- 58 The team has two trainings left before getting underway on 6 July when the National U23 Tournament begins at The Trusts Arena, Henderson.
SKYCITY Mystics Update The SKYCITY Mystics season came to an end on 14 th June, when they lost their ANZ Championship semi-final against the Queensland Firebirds in Brisbane. The Firebirds, who hadn t been beaten since round one of the competition, had a bit too much firepower thanks to the likes of their Jamaican shooter Romelda Aitken and the Australian captain Laura Geitz. There were naturally a fair few sad faces in the team s dressing room after the match, and some tears to match as the team came to terms with the fact that the season was over and they would no longer be together as a group. But, eventually the mood turned into one of reflection and plenty of positives could be found then. For starters, this is the first season in history that the SKYCITY Mystics have gone unbeaten against Kiwi opponents throughout the regular season. Their final placing over the last three seasons has moved from tenth, to seventh last year, to top four this year. The attention for many of the players now turns to national selection ahead of August s World Cup in Sydney. Eight of the SKYCITY Mystics team have been named among 30 players to trail for the Silver Ferns and New Zealand A teams, while Serena Guthrie is a certainty to be in Sydney with the England national team.
