Regional winners from around the country came together on Saturday 20 th September to celebrate the work of volunteers at a national celebration in Sheffield. With the regional winners of each award going head-to-head to be crowned national winner, the competition was stiff! Despite the competition from other regions, two of our regional winners were crowned national winners a huge congratulations goes to Gill Mason (Murial McNally Grassroots Award) and Charlotte Rush (Grassroots Coach of the Year) for winning their categories respectively.

The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow saw loads of people making the trip to Scotland to catch some of the action and see some of the Commonwealth s best athletes in action. Those who didn t get to Glasgow were able to catch a lot of the action on the TV, including the netball. Although England were unlucky to lose out on winning a medal, at least two of our North East netball family were there and volunteering at some of the most exciting matches of the Games. Our NDCC Gemma Sandberg and our RMB treasurer, Pat Percy were lucky enough to be volunteering at the Games and have courtside seats to many of the matches. Both Gemma and Pat thoroughly enjoyed their Commonwealth Games experience, and Pat said it was an honour to have been involved in the Games.

We re a region raising money! Even though the season had ended, this summer saw loads of you getting involved in charity events and fun tournaments running across the region including Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research tournament, Back to Netball tournament, Great North Run, Clarke Lister Charity tournament, 24 hours of netball On 21 st August, a tournament was held at Kenton in memory of Jennifer Manning. Well done to the winners who were Riverside Netball Club. An amazing was raised for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research. Thanks to everybody who took part, helped out and carried on playing despite the rain! A special thanks goes to the ladies at Riverside Netball Club and Gemma Sandberg for organising the event! We will be collecting money for Cancer Research at some of the Regional League games this season, so keep your eyes peeled for donation points!

England Netball s partner charity is Cancer Research UK, a charity which is close to the hearts of thousands of people around the country. Some of our local ladies have made great efforts to raise much needed funds for the charity in the past few weeks and here s some inspiring stories from around the region. A Back to Netball Tournament was held on 11 th September at Walbottle Campus. All teams were competing together for the first time, and it was the first tournament which the ladies had participated in. Over the course of the evening, over 100 was raised for Cancer Research UK. A huge thank you and well done to all of the players! Along with thousands of other runners, some of our local netballers took to the streets of Newcastle to raise money for a number of charities on 7 th September. A day full of emotions for everybody involved, many of the runners challenge themselves to raise money for causes which are close to their hearts. This year Michelle, one of our Back to Netballers, took part in the event for the first time, raising money for Cancer Research UK. Michelle was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer in 2010, 10 months after the birth of her first son. After 6 months of treatment, Michelle began her recovery and thanks to the support from her family and friends is now fit and healthy and playing for a newly formed Back to Netball team. At the last count, Michelle s efforts had raised 850 (and still increasing!). We would like to say a huge thank you and well done to Michelle for raising so much money for such a worthy cause!

The 8th annual Clarke Lister charity netball tournament took place on Saturday 6th September 2014 at Walbottle Campus Technology College. 22 teams participated in the competition which was a huge success and was enjoyed by all. The trophy final was won by Seatonians A who beat Stadium A and the plate final was won by Alexandra with Newcastle City coming runners up. This year also saw the return of a development competition which was won by Belsay with Seatonians I as runners up. Throughout the whole day 950 was raised with 6150 being raised over the last eight years in aid of The Clarke Lister Brain Haemorrhage Foundation which is a local North East charity. Clarke s mother Carole Lister started up the charity after ten year old Clarke died of a Brain Haemorrhage without warning. Each year over 15,500 people are treated nationally of which there are over 1000 people within the North East. 38% of sufferers are left severely handicapped and in need of care 24/7 and 58% of sufferers will die. Thanks to all who helped with the organising, tombola, refreshments, timing and umpiring. A special thanks to Walbottle Campus who provided the courts at a significantly reduced price and friends for their donations of prizes. The day would not have run as smoothly without their help!

In a race to raise funds for the Zambia I.D.E.A.L's project, Northumbria University Students joined forces with the local community and North East Netball in the 3 rd Annual Charity 24 Hour Netball Match. The Hour Netball event has already raised more than 1,900 for the Northumbria Sport Foundation and they are still hoping to reach their 2000 target. The Northumbria Sport Foundation is a registered charity ( ) that works in partnership with Northumbria University as the friends and fundraising arm of sport. The Foundation raises funds for specific initiatives that make a positive and sustainable impact on the sporting potential of students and the wider community. The money that is raised is invested into 5 funding areas; Athlete Scholarships, Club Funds, Leadership Bursaries, Community Funds and International Volunteering. The money raised has helped to fund the I.D.E.A.L s project. Each summer staff and students from the university work within the UK Sport IDEALS project and travel to Zambia to coach sport in the local communities, using sport as a tool to educate young people on AIDS and HIV, in some of Lusaka s most deprived neighbourhoods. Netball players from across the North East flocked to Northumbria University s 30m Sport Central facility to take part in the mammoth charity clash between Chipata and K-Town. Local clubs, businesses, Back to Netball groups and our very own North East Netball office came down to play and give the students come much needed rest. If you would like to be involved in next year s challenge then contact Josie Pointon, josie.pointon@englandnetball.co.uk

England netball launched their big summer of netball back in June and invited people to apply for funding for a variety of initiatives. Thornaby Academy were successful in gaining a small 200 grant to run a one day tournament on 30 th August The day came and thankfully the weather was kind with the sun cracking the slabs. The only down side was the wind gusting across the courts affecting the shooting prowess. The event started just after 10 with 5 teams taking part. It was played in a round robin format with matches of 10 minute halves. The teams taking part were Thornaby, Stockton and 3 mixed teams from Aston and Blakestone ladies. The teams were mixed to keep an even standard and make the festival run in a more fun way. It was a great days competition, with all matches being played in a great spirit. The overall winners were Aston/Blakeston 3 who won all their matches. The event was concluded with a barbeque manned by Sophie Gregson of Thornaby Academy. Some of the Blakeston/Aston girls also did their Ice bucket challenge with a bit of help from the local fire brigade. Thanks to Sophie Gregson and to all the competitors for a good days friendly netball.
