2 HEAD COACH-RANDY MARKS Randy Marks just completed his 18th season as the head coach of the Villanova University men s lacrosse team in Since his arrival on the Main Line, the Wildcats have compiled a (.539) record, while playing one of the toughest schedules in the nation. In 2000, Marks guided the Wildcats to an outstanding 9-5 record, their best since During his time at Villanova, Marks has coached three All- Americans and has had six players named to the prestigious North/South All-Star Game, including senior midfielders Jack McTigue and Christopher Larson after the 2000 season. In 1991, Marks led the Wildcats to their first national ranking. That same year, the team finished the season ranked No. 20 in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Poll. Coach Marks also reached the 100 win plateau in the 1996 season as the Wildcats defeated Lehigh 6-4. Prior to his arrival at Villanova in 1983, Marks was an assistant coach at nearby Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pa., for eleven years. During that time, he also served as an assistant coach for the school s football program. In addition to his coaching stints, Marks has been an active member of the Lower Merion School District for 31 years in various capacities. He is currently the Dean of Students at Harriton High School. Lacrosse is a family tradition in the Marks home. The oldest son, David, was a 1998 graduate of Johns Hopkins University where he was the Blue Birds third leading scorer. Prior to his transfer to JHU, Marks was the Wildcats leading scorer in Justin Marks, a Villanova sophomore attackman, and Brian Marks, a freshman attackman, enter this season on the Main Line after stellar careers at Downingtown High School. Coach Marks is a 1969 graduate of West Chester University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education, as well as his Masters degree in Education. He and his wife, currently reside in Glenmoore, Pa., with their three sons, David (23), Justin (19) and Brian (18). During the summer of 1999, Villanova Stadium was renovated and a new 6,000 square-foot structure was built. This structure houses the new press facilities for the football, field hockey, and men s and women s lacrosse teams, as well as team meet - ing rooms and the new Academic Resource Center for Wildcat student-athletes. 3 LAST TIME OUT IN 2000: The Vi l l a n ova University men s lacrosse team hosted the U.S. Air Force Academy at Villanova Stadium on Sunday, April 30. The Wildcats, looking to finish the season with their best record since 1991, won all four quarters to take the contest Fittingly on Senior Day, two Wildcat seniors reached career milestones. Senior Jack McTigue tallied six assists to eclipse the all-time assists mark at Villanova with 89, while midfielder Eric Dauer netted four goals to give him 100 points scored for his career. FINAL NEWS AND NOTES CENTURY MARK: Villanova senior midfielder Eric Dauer entered the last game of the year needing four points to reach 100 for his career. Dauer came through with four goals in the finale to get to the plateau. He netted a career-high 34 goals and dished out three assists to tie for third on the squad with 37 points this season. Fellow senior midfielder Jack McTigue scored his 100th career point earlier this season and finished with 119. Eric Dauer BEST SINCE 91: The 2000 edition of Villanova men s lacrosse finished at 9-5 (.643), it s best record since a 9-5 mark in 1991 when the Wildcats ended the season ranked #20 in the country. The best record of head coach Randy Marks fine coaching career came in 1984 when he led Nova to a sparkling 11-1 season, good for a.916 winning percentage. MAKING THEIR MARKS: Lacrosse for the Marks family has been a family affair at Villanova. Villanova head coach Randy Marks was joined on the coaching staff this season by his son, Volunteer Assistant Coach David Ma rk s. Justin Marks So p h o m o re attackman Justin Ma rk s Brian Marks enjoyed a solid season for Villanova with 10 goals and three assists, while youngest son Brian Marks was a starting attackman as a freshman and the team s third-leading scorer with 37 points (17 goals, 20 assists). Brian also earned the team s Rookie of the Year Award for his performance. Jack McTigue THANKS, JACK: Senior middie Jack McTigue, who finished the 99 season fifth in the country with 35 assists, lended a hand again this year as he ended in the third position in the 2000 NCAA leaders. McTigue tallied 42 assists in 14 games for an average of 3.00 per game. Villanova s single season record for assists is 45 by Bob Adams (1979). THANKS, AGAIN: With his 42 assists this year, senior Jack McTigue totaled 89 in his career to break the Villanova all-time assist record set by former Wildcat standout Rick Bontatibus ( ). Bontatibus, a USILA All-American and North/South All-Star Game participant, tallied 88 assists in a stellar career on the Main Line. Bontatibus GOOD SPORTS: The 2000 Villanova University men's lacrosse team and coaching staff have been awarded this year's Joseph (Frenchy) Julien Memorial Award for sportsmanship. The honor, presented annually to the team that consistently exemplifies the qualities of good sportsmanship and character throughout the season, is given by the membership of the District III Lacrosse Officials' Association in honor of Mr. Julien who many consider the father of lacrosse officiating. Head coach Randy Marks, along with his staff and players, won the distinction over the other 18 Division I men's lacrosse programs that make up District III. ALL-STARS: For the first time since 1993, the Villanova men s lacrosse team had two players named to the annual North/South All- Star game. Seniors Jack McTigue and Christopher Larson were honored this season for their outstanding play. McTigue was third in the nation with 42 assists, while Larson scored a team-leading 35 goals and tallied 107 groundballs. In 93, Rick Bontatibus and Scott Chisholm represented Nova in the senior all-star game. AWARD WINNERS: Head Coach Randy Marks announced this year s Villanova men s lacrosse team award winners. The team s Most Valuable Player award went to senior midfielder Christopher Larson. Larson led the team in goals, shots, groundballs, and face-off percentage, while finishing second in points. The Jim Jones award went to senior midfielder Eric Dauer for Holbig his numerous contributions to the team. While being a selfless leader on and off the field for the Wildcats, Dauer also performed on the field with 34 goals (second on the squad), 37 points (tied for third), and 55 groundballs (second). The 2000 Villanova Rookie of the Year went to freshman attackman Brian Marks. Marks was excellent in his first year of collegiate lacrosse as he started every game, tying for third on the team in points with 37 and finishing second in assists with 20. This year s Most Improved Player award went to sophomore midfielder Carlton Holbig. Holbig played in all 14 games, tallying 18 groundballs and two shots. MORE VILLANOVA IN THE NCAA LEADERS: Two other Wildcats can be found in the NCAA statistical leaders this season. Senior midfielder Christopher L a r s o n finished 7th in groundballs with 107 (7.64/gm), while junior goalie Matt Wilk was 9th in save % at.621. As a team, Nova also placed among Chris Larson the national leaders. The Wildcats man-advantage led the nation in scoring % at.517 (31 goals in 60 attempts). The Cats also ended up 15th in scoring with goals per game, and they recorded the 17th best team winning % (.643).

5 Vi l l a n ova, Pa. - The Vi l l a n ova men s l a c rosse team opened up the 2000 season at home today as they hosted the University of Denver. The visiting Pioneers got the best of the Wildcats as the visitors took the contest With the win, Denver ups its record to 2-0, while Vi l l a n ova falls to 0-1. After allowing an early goal, the Wildcats ran off three unanswered scores to take a 3-1 lead in the first GAME # 1 FEBRUARY 27, 2000 DENVER 13 - VILLANOVA 7 q u a rt e r. Senior midfielder Eric Da u e r (Woodbridge, Va./Bishop OíConnell) found the net unassisted at 8:44 of the first quarter as he scored Villanova s first goal of Chris Larson (New Milford, Conn./Canterbury School), another senior midfielder, netted the Cats second score off of a feed from senior middie Jack McTigue (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage), while junior attackman Andrew Bogle (Wilton, Conn./Wilton) put home Villanova s third goal of the period. Leading 3-2 entering the second stanza, Villanova would be outscored 6-0 in the second quarter as Denver opened up an 8-3 halftime lead. With their goal at 13:33 of the third period, the Pioneers totaled eight consecutive scores, thus extending the lead to 9-3. Freshman attackman Brian Marks (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown) scored his first career goal at 13:15 of the third, but the visitors answered to keep the margin at six goals. Dauer would score his second goal of the contest from Larson, but again Denver tallied a score of its own. The fourth quarter saw the Cats claw back to within five, but Denver finished the game s scoring with two straight goals to take the contest Villanova s top performers for the game included Dauer, who scored twice, McTigue, who had two assists, and Larson, who tallied a goal and an assist. The Wildcats were unable to overcome an early seven-goal deficit and were beaten by the Ni t t a n y Lions by a score of 13-7 on the strength of Do n Mayerhofer's four goals and four assists. The loss drops the 'Cats 2000 record to 0-2, while Penn State evens its mark at 1-1. Villanova dug itself a huge hole in the first quarter as the visitors poured in seven unanswered goals to enter the second period ahead 7-0. In the second stanza, the Wildcats finally got things going at 10:41 when senior midfielder Chris Larson scored off of a Jack Mc Tigue pass. Vi l l a n ova tallied another goal two minutes later when freshman Brian Marks netted his second of the season, thanks in part to an Andrew Bogle assist. Unfortunately for Villanova, Penn State matched the 'Cats two second period goals and took a 9-2 lead into the half. The third period was a mirror image of the second with the Wildcats scoring the quarters first two goals, and Penn State matching the two scores. After Villanova's Justin Loonie made it 9-3, Bogle got in on the scoring action as he netted an unassisted score. The Wildcats would once again score the periods first two goals in the fourth when Bogle tallied his third and fourth goals of the day, with one coming off of a pass from sophomore Justin Marks. Penn State came back to score two more until Larson finished off the game's scoring with an unassisted goal, making the final score 13-7 in favor of the Nittany Lions. 6 Bethlehem, PA - Tr a veling to Be t h l e h e m, Pa., on Saturday, March 11, the Villanova men's lacrosse team posted its first win of the 2000 season. T h e Wildcats defeated Lehigh by the score of 11-9, to improve to 1-2 overall on the year. The Villanova win also handed the Mountain Hawks their first loss of the season, as they dropped to 3-1. The Wildcats jumped out to a hot start, leading 4-1 after one period. Lehigh battled back, however, to tie the game up at 8-8, heading into the fourth and final period. In the last period, Villanova picked up where they left off in the first quarter, as the Wildcat offense outscored the Mountain Hawks 3-1, en route to the 11-9 win. Offensively for the 'Cats, senior Eric Dauer was huge as he netted four goals. The Wildcats jumped ahead early with a 5-2 lead after one quarter and they never looked back as they prevailed The victory evens the 'Cats 2000 record at 2-2, while Lafayette falls to 1-1 on the season. Freshman attackman Brian Ma rks started off the game's scoring as he netted an unassisted goal at 13:42 of the first quarter. Senior Clayton Greene came back at 11:48 to score his first goal of the season to give the 'Cats a 2-0 lead that they would not relinquish. After taking a 5-2 advantage into the second quarter, the Wildcats outscored Lafayette 6-1 in the second stanza to post an 11-3 lead at the half. Beginning with Chris Larson's goal off of a pass from senior tri-captain Junior attackman Andrew Bogle scored twice in the 16-5 rout over Lafayette at Villanova. Jack McTigue at 9:56 of the second period, the Wildcats scored five straight goals to end the half. Villanova scored the only two goals of the third quarter as senior Tom Lasky and the freshman Marks scored to increase the Villanova lead to With Lasky's goal at 14:03 of the fourth quarter, 'Nova scored its eighth consecutive goal. Finally, Lafayette got back into the scoring column with two goals, but the Wildcats made sure they got those two back as Justin Marks and Pete Franchetti closed out the game's scoring. 7 GAME # 5 MARCH 18, 2000 VILLANOVA 14 - DARTMOUTH 9 Vi l l a n ova, Pa. - In men's lacrosse action at Vi l l a n ova Stadium on Sa t u rd a y, Ma rch 18, the Villanova Wildcats won for thethird-straight time with an impressive 14-9 win over the Dartmouth Big Green. With the win, Vi l l a n ova improves to 3-2 on the season, while Dartmouth falls to 2-1 on the year. Leading 8-5 midway through the third quarter, the Wildcats s c o red four unanswe re d goals to take a commanding 12-5 lead with just 7:52 to play in the fourth quarter. Two of the four goals were tallied by sophomore Justin Ma rks (Gl e n m o o re, Pa. ) who scored four goals onthe afternoon. Both teams scored twice in the first quarter, before Villanova began the second stanza by recording four-straight goals to open up a 6-2 lead with 8:39 left until intermission. The two teams would go to halftime with Villanova leading 7-3. Dauer had a strong game for Villanova with four goals and an assist, while senior Jack McTigue (Bethpage, N.Y.) registered four assists. McTigue now has tallied 16 assists in five games. Senior Chris Larson (New Milford, Conn.) and junior Andrew Bogle (Wilton, Conn.) scored wo goals each. Junior Matt Wilk (Bound Brook, N.J.) earned the win in goal for Villanova with eight saves. Dartmouth received two goals each from Greg Edell and Connor Price. The Wildcats started a little s l u g g i s h l y, leading 2-1 at the half, but the visitors came out in the second half and took control of the game. In the third quarter, the Cats outscored the home team 6-1, getting goals from six differe n t players. GAME # 8 APRIL 5, 2000 #8 JOHNS HOPKINS 17 - VILLANOVA 7 BALTIMORE, MD. Baltimore, Md. -- Senior attackman Dan Denihan scored four goals and added four assists and eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins outscored Villanova 7-0 in the fourth quarter as the Blue Jays cruised to a 17-7 victory at Homewood Field. The win is the second straight for the Blue Jays, who improve to 3-3 with the win. Villanova had a five-game winning streak snapped and falls to 5-3. Johns Hopkins led just 10-7 entering the fourth quarter before putting the game away. Denihan picked up all four of his assists in the final period and seven different players scored in quarter as well. Senior midfielder A.J. Haugen opened the scoring run with his third goal of the game and freshman attackman Bobby Benson finished the spree with his third tally. Also scoring in the final period for the Blue Jays were John Brasko, Adam Doneger, Christian Pforr, Dave Rabuano, and Joe Driscoll. Villanova came out strong as the Wildcats led by scores of 1-0, 3-2, and 4-3 before falling behind 6-4 at the half. The Wildcats got two of Chris Larson's three goals before the half and Andrew Bogle scored both of his goals before intermission. Villanova was still within 7-5 after Larson scored his third goal with 10:40 left in the third quarter and trailed just 10-7 after Brian Marks and Jack McTigue sandwiched goals around a Benson tally late in the period. But Hopkins outshot the Wildcats, 22-0 in the final period and was never threatened after Haugen and Brasko scored in the first two minutes of the quarter. In addition to Denihan, Haugen, and Benson, Hopkins got two goals from Doneger and one goal and one assist from Justin Shaberly. Senior goalie Brian Carcaterra made nine saves in goal for the Blue Jays, who outshot Villanova, and held a advantage in ground balls as well. Villanova jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first quarter on goals by Chris Larson and Andrew Bogle. Marks then scored the first of his three goals on the day to give Villanova the edge. SJU could never muster any offense as they scored a season low three goals. The Wildcats took a 3-0 lead going into the second period as they held the Hawks scoreless in the first period, the first time SJU has not scored in a single period all season. T h e Hawks did not score until the 11:58 mark of the second period on a goal from junior Randy McNeill cutting the Wildcat lead to 1-3.
