The Golden Eagles (2-0) face the Buckeyes at 4 p.m. Central time on Friday, March 2 before playing Bellarmine at 10 a.m. CT on Sunday, March 4. Marquette is 4-2 through the first three years of the tournament, which began in 2015 at Bellarmine. MU has played both OSU and Detroit Mercy in each of the first three years of the event, though it has faced Bellarmine on four occasions all-time. Marquette returns to the site of its last contest, a 13-6 victory over Detroit Mercy on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Eagles went up 3-0 and used a 7-1 run over the second and third quarters to pull away for the win as attackman Anthony Orsini tied an MU freshman record with four goals. Orsini, the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week also added an assist, while redshirt junior Jack Zerrillo recorded his first career hat trick. Ohio State (4-0) is coming off a overtime victory at Jacksonville on Sunday afternoon in which the Buckeyes trailed by three goals in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Tre Leclaire scored the game tying goal with 1.8 seconds left in regulation and the game winner in overtime. Leclaire also notched his first of the day at the 1:34 mark with OSU down two and completed the comeback with his final two markers. Jackson Reid sits second to Leclaire (11) with seven goals scored this season and the Buckeyes are averaging goals per game following victories over JU, Cleveland State, then-no. 20 Boston University and Hofstra. MU is just 1-4 all-time against Ohio State with the lone victory coming in 2015 (10-9) in the inaugural Midwest Lacrosse Classic in Louisville, Kentucky. OSU has captured victories over MU in each of the last two seasons, 12-8 in 2016 in Columbus, Ohio, and a 12-6 win last season in Milwaukee. Marquette doesn t return any point producers from last year s meeting, though goalie Cole Blazer set an MU program record with 18 saves in the loss. Face-off specialist Zachary Melillo, who missed last year s matchup with the Buckeyes due to injury, won 75 percent (15-of- 20) at the dot on Saturday against UDM and picked up eight ground balls. Marquette is 2-2 all-time against Bellarmine but has never played BU in the Midwest Lacrosse Classic. Knights, 9-7, in the 2016 season opener and did not face BU last season. Bellarmine has lost its last three games to Michigan, Cleveland State and Manhattan, after a 15-7 seasonopening win over Robert Morris on Feb. 9. Brian Wall leads the Knights with nine goals, including hat tricks in each of the last two games, while Morgan Macko has a team-high 14 points on seven goals and seven assists. Following play this weekend, the Golden Eagles return to Milwaukee to host Robert Morris on Saturday, March 10 at Valley Fields. They will then head back to Michigan on March 17 to take on the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. ORSINI TIES MU FRESHMAN RECORD Freshman attackman Anthony Orsini tied a Marquette freshman record with four goals in MU s 13-6 win at Detroit Mercy on Feb. 24 and was named the BIG EAST Conference Freshman of the Week on Monday afternoon. His mark tied him with Conor Gately, who posted four on April 13, 2013 against High Point. Orsini also added an assist for five points, the second highest point total for an MU freshman. That mark is second only to Gately s seven points at Mercer on March 12, NEW FACES PRODUCE ON OFFENSE A number of individuals contributed in the season s first two games for a Marquette squad that returned just one of its top seven and two of its top 11 scorers from last season. In addition to leading returning scorer John Wagner s five points, sophomore Connor McClelland scored four times in his first career start against Jacksonville, while freshman Anthony Orsini scored twice in his NCAA debut. Senior SSDM Colin Riehl tallied his first career goal off a late first period faceoff and sophomore Peter Henkhaus scored after finding the back of the net just once during his freshman campaign. Also tallying their first career points were midfielders Colin O Donnell, a redshirt freshman, and sophomore Ryan Fazio. Against Detroit Mercy, Orsini scored four times and Jack Zerrillo posted a hat trick, while sophomore Tommy van den Benken and Luke Vassos each tallied the first career goals. DEFENSE RETURNS MOST OF 2017 PRODUCTION A strong defensive unit has been the hallmark of Marquette squads under head coach Joe Amplo and is expected to be a formidable group once again in In addition to senior goalie Cole Blazer, the Golden Eagles return a pair of 16-game starters at close defense in fellow All-BIG EAST Preseason Team selection Nick Grill and junior Jackson Ehlert. Brendon Connolly, who played in 15 games last season at LSM slides down to take the third spot vacated by the graduation of multi-year starter Nick Eufrasio. Noah Richard and Colin Riehl also return after playing in all 16 games last season at LSM and SSDM, respectively, and will join the face-off unit on the wings with MU s all-time face-off leader Zachary Melillo. PLAYERS ON MU ROSTER For the first time Marquette has a pair of players on its roster who played lacrosse in the state of Wisconsin in Jordan Schmid (Waukesha, Wis./Kettle Moraine H.S.) and Moey Lardy (Cedarburg, Wis./Cedarburg). Schmid, who will redshirt the 2018 season after suffering a knee injury in the fall, helped Kettle Moraine to a pair of state titles as junior and senior, and posted 120 goals and 232 points in 71 games over his final three seasons. Lardy, whose parents now live in California, spent his first two years of high school in Cedarburg, Wisconsin and played with the Amplify Lacrosse Club. Either would be the first Wisconsinite to play for Marquette when they make their debut, as the only other player from the state to ever appear on the MU roster was Ryan Condon (Wausau, Wis.) in 2013, who never played for the Golden Eagles. WAGNER IS LONE RETURNING STARTER ON OFFENSE Marquette returns just one of its top seven and two of its top 11 scorers from last season, led by junior John Wagner. Wagner tied for second on the team with 22 goals as a sophomore, and despite posting just three assists, will be relied upon to facilitate more as a junior. The St. Davids, Ontario native posted a combined six goals against Denver last season, including a career-high four in the BIG EAST semis, and a total of five at Notre Dame with a hat trick in the 2017 NCAA First Round. Wagner experienced an up-and-down freshman season in 2016, playing in all 16 games, but scoring in just two of them. The Canadian carved out a more prominent role on the first line as a sophomore and had an eight-game scoring streak that was snapped against Duke on April 22. MELILLO LEADS FACE-OFF UNIT Senior faceoff specialist Zachary Melillo was called the 2016 team MVP by head coach Joe Amplo because of what his presence at the face-off X meant to the entire Marquette squad. The Warren, New Jersey native went on to set the MU career face-off win record in just his first season with 178 victories. That 56.2 percent clip ranked him 21st in the nation and helped him earn All-BIG EAST Second Team accolades. Melillo holds a career 54.6 percent mark at the dot and tied his own MU record in the Golden Eagles NCAA tournament game at Notre Dame last season with 19 wins. 5 HEAD COACH JOE AMPLO Seventh Year/Sixth Season Farmingville, N.Y. Hofstra (2000) In just five seasons of competition, Joe Amplo has built the Marquette program into a BIG EAST Conference Champion and established himself as one of the top head coaches in NCAA Division I men s lacrosse. Amplo, a Team USA assistant coach and member of the NCAA Division I Men s Lacrosse Committee, was named the first head coach in Marquette history on Feb. 4, 2011 and has built a program in his likeness to national relevance. Marquette has qualified for the semifinals of the BIG EAST tournament during each year as a league member and has increased its overall win total all but one season. Thirteen Golden Eagles have earned 22 All-BIG EAST honors in four conference campaigns, while five players have earned USILA All- America recognition and nine have been selected in either the NLL or MLL drafts. The 2014 BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year guided the Golden Eagles to a 10-win campaign in just their third season of competition in 2015 and in 2016 led Marquette to its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance on the heels of a victory over No. 1 Denver in the BIG EAST Championship game. The Golden Eagles earned a No. 6 national seed in the NCAA playoffs and fell to eventual NCAA Champion North Carolina by a single goal in the first NCAA tournament game ever played in the state of Wisconsin. Amplo led MU on a surprise run to the NCAA tournament in 2017 by becoming the first No. 4 seed to win the BIG EAST Championship after upsetting top-seeded and No. 2 Denver, 11-8, in the semifinals. The Golden Eagles then downed tournament-host Providence in the final as junior goalie Cole Blazer took home most outstanding player honors. MU earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship where it fell to fourth-seeded and No. 7 Notre Dame 15-9 in the first round. The Marquette defense ranked among the nation s leaders all of 2016, leading to recognition for MU s three MLL draft picks in graduate students Liam Byrnes and B.J. Grill and senior Jacob Richard. Byrnes was named the 2016 BIG EAST Conference Defensive Player of the Year, a first team allleague performer, the most outstanding player at the BIG EAST tournament and a USILA Second Team All-American. Amplo came to Marquette with 11 years of collegiate coaching experience, 10 of which came at his alma mater, Hofstra University. He served as associate head coach with the Pride for three years, and was the team's defensive coordinator. During his time at Hofstra, Amplo participated in 11 NCAA Championships, three as a student-athlete and eight as a coach. In 2011, Hofstra had the nation's No. 1 defense, boasting the lowest goals against average in the country. In his first stint with Hofstra, Amplo worked under then-head coach John Danowski, now the coach of three-time NCAA Champion Duke University. From his return to Hofstra in 2003 through 2011, the Pride posted a record and advanced to five NCAA Championships. He coached 21 All-Americans at Hofstra, including five conference players of the year, Tewaaraton Award winner Doug Shannahan (2001) and Tewaaraton Award finalist Chris Unterstein. As a student-athlete, he was an All-America East performer as a senior in 1999 when he started all 16 games and led the school to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship. He played in 58 games in his career and notched 91 ground balls, 40 of which came during his senior season. In addition to his work with Hofstra, Amplo is active on the lecture circuit and is the founder of the Golden Eagle Lacrosse Club, which operates clinics, camps and competitive club teams for the Milwaukee area lacrosse community. The Farmingville, New York native attended Sachem High School in Lake Ronkonkoma, New York, where he earned four letters in both lacrosse and football and was an all-conference performer. Amplo graduated from Hofstra in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in geography and earned a master's degree in college student counseling. He and his wife, Jennifer, reside in Cedarburg, Wis. and have three daughters, Sophia, Charlotte, and Lily. AMPLO S HEAD COACHING RECORD Year Team Overall Pct. Conf. Pct.
