3 Golden Eagles facing nation s top teams in first season Marquette is slated to go head-to-head against some of the top college lacrosse teams throughout the country in There were six schools on MU s inaugural schedule either ranked or receiving votes in one or both of the national polls when the Golden Eagles opened the regular season on Feb. 23 at Ohio State, a consensus top-20 team. Currently the highest-ranked opponent the Golden Eagles are scheduled to play is No. 2/2 Notre Dame (April 2 in Chicago). How MU has fared against the top MU dropped its first regular-season game at No. 19/17 Ohio State, 18-8 on Feb. 23; the Buckeyes check in this week ranked as high as No. 8 (Nike/Inside Lacrosse Poll). Marquette defeated Air Force, 8-6, for the program s first-ever win on March 2. The Falcons, who entered the game with an overall record of 4-1 and whose only previous loss was to No. 4 North Carolina, were receiving votes in both major polls preseason sets stage for inaugural campaign Marquette played a total of four exhibition games in early February in advance of its inaugural season. MU traveled to Michigan on Feb. 2 to play the Wolverines followed by a scrimmage vs. Denison. The Golden Eagles then played Hofstra and Penn in Hempstead, N.Y., on Feb. 10. Smistad, Dvorak & Matt Melnyk tabbed team captains Head coach Joe Amplo announced in early May 2012 that Calgary, Alberta, native Andrew Smistad was named the first team captain in the history of the Marquette men s lacrosse program. A 6-foot-2 defensive midfielder, Smistad was appointed to the leadership role following the team s first year as an organized varsity program in in which MU did not compete. Redshirt sophomore Ben Dvorak (St. Charles, Ill.) and redshirt junior Matt Melnyk (Calgary, Alberta) joined Andrew Smistad at the end of the team s fall season. Head coach Joe Amplo made the announcement in December, prior to holiday break before the 2013 spring semester. All three co-captains have prior NCAA Division I playing experience. Dvorak transferred to Marquette from Bellarmine, while Smistad and Melnyk came to MU after Presbyterian dropped its men s lacrosse program. Road warriors make debut by embarking on nationwide tour Lacrosse fans in Milwaukee will have to wait until late in the 2013 season to see the Golden Eagles play their first-ever home game. MU will play nine games outside the state of Wisconsin before hosting Detroit on April 20 at Hart Park. Marquette s nine consecutive road (or neutral site) games to open this season is the most in NCAA Division I lacrosse, three more than runner-up VMI (6).
