Project Record Forms are used to keep track of livestock project growth and development. Atascosa 4-H will once again sponsor the MAP contest for livestock projects at the Atascosa County Livestock Show. Medals will be awarded for 1st and 2nd place winners in each age division per project category and will be announced during the ACLS Auction and Parade of Champions on Saturday, January 21st. It promotes positive values, social responsibility, and lifelong learning. An af iliated program, Clover Kids, is available in some areas for children 5 to 7 (K to 2). Through 4 H and the opportunities it provides, 4 H members have the ability to participate in many events and activities, as well as apply for scholarships, travel the country, and meet new friends. 3 Beginners Sewing Class: Interested in learning to sew, are 9 years or older and an active member in 4-H? A new beginners sewing class starting this month. Slots still available. No sewing machine is needed, but we do need a commitment for four Saturdays (second Saturday of the month) from 9:00am-12:00 noon, starting January 14, A one time fee of $15.00 will be charged for materials and is due prior of start of class. Attendance is important as skills are built on prior class. Class size is limited so please call the Extension Office and ask for Dru Benavides or Michelle Pfeil at to be added to list Texas 4-H Photography Contest Theme: For 2017 the theme is Reflec ons. These are photos shot off any natural or ar ficial reflec ve surface. A well executed shot will be able to show perfect symmetry or a slightly distorted shot. Examples of photographs in the theme would be, but not limited to, photos from lakes, a window pane, a mirror, or a polished/wax car. 4 H members are encouraged to be crea ve when thinking about reflec ons in everyday life and where they are seen. Changes to rules for Photos must be 8X10 in size with a quality resolu on. Over the past two years the majority of disqualifica on in the contest have occurred when the photography is too small to be viewed by the judge. Addi onally, please remember that all photos must be the original work of the 4 H member submi ng the photograph. No photograph can be submi ed which has been taken by other 4 H members, a family member, or any printed/digital source. All Rules and categories can be found online at website listed above. Presenters were Mike Petter, Resource and Land Management, Jeff Petter, Resource & Land Management, Will Platz, Resource & Land Management, Mrs. Platz, Texas Parks and Wildlife, Dale Rankin County Extension Agent Ag/Nr and 4-H. 4-H Members present were Ely Rankin, Ethan Ayala, Chloe Jackson, Colton Eisenhauer, Weston Eisenhauer, Derek Scharmann, Isaac Kumaus, Peter Kumaus, Elijah Kumaus, Abi Kumaus, McKenzie Lutz. Thank you to the Ramey Family for allowing us to meet at their building and create this Wildscape. The group will hiatus for a short while but will resume activities with a Spring meeting on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 6:30pm. Plan to meet at the Extension Office in Leming. 4

5 San Antonio Livestock Show project poults are due to arrive on January 10, Please plan accordingly. Members with orders will receive more information on that day with an approximate time of arrival. The 4-H Dog Project will meet on January 12th & 25th at 6pm in the Extension Office Auditorium in Leming. 4-H Dog Validation is due by January 10th. Anyone interested in finding out more about the 4-H Dog Project, please contact Michelle, 4-h Program Assistant at or visit Come learn the basics of showing off your rabbit project. A Rabbit Showmanship Clinic will be offered on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 at 6:30pm at the County Extension Office. First year project members are encouraged to attend San Antonio Livestock Show Youth Rodeo If you are a 4-H member and plan to enter the 2017 Youth Rodeo, their deadline is January 15 th for online entries and mail in entries must be postmarked before then. Please make sure you come by the office for Mr. Rankin s signature by January 13 th. Also let Michelle Pfeil know what you plan to enter so she can send a letter to the school. 5

It is not too late to join a club. Registration with Texas 4-H is required and open on 4-H Connect. The state participation fee is currently $25. This fee does NOT include supplies, contests, or club membership fees, if any. When enrolling on 4-H Connect, make sure and check both Shooting Sports and a primary club on the list. In order to participate in the shooting sports program, members must enrolled with one of our area clubs and meet the 50% attendance requirement prior to any 4-H sponsored contests. First time shooters must attend a MANDATORY safety orientation. Rifle orientation will be held on Sunday, January 29th at 2:00pm at the Meyer Range located at 95 Co Rd 321, Jourdanton, TX IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE The District 12 4-H Shotgun Match has been moved to Saturday, May 13, 2017 (Originally scheduled for May 12th). Please plan accordingly Shooting Sports Events The State Natural Resources & Shooting Sports Events Quick Reference Schedule for the coming 4-H Year can be found at the first link under 4-H Member Resources. The document contains basic information for each event (location, date, registration dates, late registration where applicable, and cost). We highly recommend online use of this document as updates and additions are made frequently. Please take special notice of events coming early in the new 4-H year, specifically Shooting Sports Coach Trainings, and encourage participants to enroll/reenroll quickly via 4H Connect so that process can be completed in time to make the event registration deadline. 7 DISTRICT 12 4-H SHOOTING SPORTS POSTAL LEAGUE RIFLE, SHOTGUN, ARCHERY, AIR PISTOL The District 12 4-H Shooting Sports Postal League was a huge success last year and we are excited to announce the 2017 event. The Postal League is designed to provide additional shooting sports opportunities for 4-H members across District 12. The event includes Smallbore Rifle, Shotgun, Archery and Air Pistol. Participants in Archery and Shotgun events will provide their own Archery and Shotgun targets. Rifle and Air Pistol targets will be distributed to coaches shortly after entry deadline. Select the D12 4-H Shooting Sports Postal League event. The registration period will begin February 1st and conclude on February 25, Coaches can register on the participant s behalf. Participants of these 4-H events should coordinate with their respective coach or county office to register. A registration fee of $15.00 dollars will be charged per shooter per event. 8 Community Service Several Atascosa 4-H members stepped out this Christmas season to lend a helping hand. Mesquite 4-H members Kenley Everett, Caitlyn Nieschwitz, and Chloe Nieschwitz assisted with duties at the Pictures with Santa event held at the Jourdanton Library. Poteet 4-H members Olivia Fletcher, Aliana Garcia, Marco Garcia, Derek Scharmann, and Morgan Winter donated sweet treats for Poteet s Blue Santa children s gift giving event. Poteet 4-H member Taylor Fojtik was invited by Ronald McDonald House Charities to their holiday event to donate pillows she made for sick children. 8

9 Tennessee 4-H is receiving a number of contacts asking how they can help those individuals in the towns of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, TN (Sevier County) that have been impacted by the recent wildfire. Large amounts of supplies have been donated already. What is needed is help in providing for the financial needs of these families as they rebuild their lives. The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture and Tennessee 4-H are announcing an effort to collect gift cards for people displaced and affected by the wildfires in Sevier County, Tennessee. Fires over the past two days have destroyed thousands of acres of forests, burned hundreds of buildings and businesses and claimed several lives. At the present time we are aware of 30 4-H families that have lost everything in the fire. In addition, a mother and her two daughters are still missing. These two daughters are both 4-H members, ages 12 and 9. Gift cards of any monetary value to nationally recognized retailers can be mailed to the UT Extension office in Sevier County to Alan Bruhin s (County Director) attention. 4-Hers, UTIA employees or anyone across the state or nation are encouraged to help out as best they can. Affected families will be able to use these cards to buy supplies and necessities in the coming weeks of rebuilding. Donated gift cards can be mailed to UT Extension, 752 Old Knoxville Highway, Sevierville, TN The phone number of the office is If individuals desire a tax deductible receipt for their monetary donation, those individuals can mail a donation, made payable to the Tennessee 4-H Foundation, to 2621 Morgan Circle, 205 Morgan Hall, Knoxville, TN The Tennessee 4-H Foundation will, in turn, purchase gift cards using the donations and send them to the Extension office in Sevier County. 9

10 Livestock Show Information Atascosa County Livestock Show Community Service January 7th and 14th are 4-H Clean Up Days at the show barn. Please come out and volunteer your time to clean and make the show barn looks great for your Junior Livestock Show. Clean up begins bright and early at 8:00am. 4-H Council and Ambassador Officers Community Service Opportunity Officers are encouraged to participate in opening ceremonies at the county stock show during their own show date(s). School absence excuses will not be granted for opening ceremonies only. Officers should be in official dress when taking part in the ceremonies. Ambassador: green jacket, white shirt, & khaki pants. Council: official council or white shirt & khaki pants. Anyone needing assistance in getting ready for the Atascosa County Livestock Show and other major shows can contact County Agent Dale Rankin to set up an appointment for individualized help with their project(s). For those of you who have purchased season passes and/or gate passes for major shows, check with us to see if they have been received in our office. All exhibitors and parents should remain out of cattle area. 9:00am Participants should be in holding area for interviews. Members set up exhibits and hands-on activity booths for visitors and guests attending the Stock Show & Rodeo. The purpose of this Fashion Show is to give our youth an opportunity to show their talents and abilities. This is not a judged competition; it is simply a time when young people can show off a garment that they have made. The garment(s) can be created from a purchased pattern, an original design or a redesign of a garment. Entry DEADLINE Feb 1st We would also like to highlight student design sketches or design boards. We will display them prior to and during the Fashion Show itself. You do not have to have a garment in the Fashion Show in order to have your work displayed. We would welcome any student to participate in this capacity. You can enter cookies, cakes, breads, pies, candy & much more. Cost is $3 per class. You can enter one item in each class, there are 12 classes. 16 CONSERVATION POSTER CONTEST The Atascosa County Soil & Water Conservation District is again sponsoring a Conservation Poster Contest for all Atascosa County students, grades 1 st through 6 th (age 12 & under). This does not jeopardize Texas University Interscholastic League eligibility. It is our intention that this be a voluntary program. We encourage all teachers to use this as a classroom aid. To avoid too much help from parents and others, it is suggested that the posters be prepared in the classroom rather than in the home. The following are the rules and guidelines pertaining to the contest: Students may enter posters that pertain to this year s contest theme which is We All Need Trees. Please use the Current Theme of the contest. More detailed information on the theme will be posted on the website stewardship&education.com. 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place plaques will be awarded for each grade level with up to the best three being forwarded to Temple, Texas, to be entered into the Texas Conservation Awards Program. An overall winner will be selected and a plaque presented at the local Annual Conservation Awards Program and Dinner on June 8, (NOTE: By entering the District contest, students agree to release the name of their parents, home address, and telephone number to the District for the sole purpose of forwarding District winning entries to Area competition and for an invitation to the annual Awards Program.) Poster entries should be drawn on standard poster board. Note: poster board should be cut to half size 22 X 14. (No construction paper.) Artwork on entries should be produced with materials that do not readily smear, crack, or chip. A fixative or lamination may be used. The poster entry artwork surface should be flat. Poster is to be identified by Name, School, Grade, and Room, all of which is to be printed on back of the poster. (Do not place child s name on front of poster.) Posters will be judged on conservation message, neatness, and originality. 17 CONSERVATION ESSAY CONTEST The Atascosa County Soil & Water Conservation District #307 is again sponsoring a Conservation Essay Contest for Atascosa County students. This contest is open to Atascosa County students in the following age divisions: Ages 13 years and under (maximum of 300 words) Ages 14 to 18 (maximum of 500 words). The topic for this year s contest is Why Do We All Need Trees? Please use the Current Theme of the contest. More detailed information on the theme will be posted on the website at As you write your essay, you should remember: write about soil and water conservation practices make your writing interesting to the reader make sure that each sentence you write helps the reader understand your essay make sure that your ideas are clear and easy for the reader to follow write about your ideas in detail so that the reader really understands what you are saying check your work for correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation, grammar, and sentences 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place plaques will be awarded for each division with up to the best three being forwarded to Temple, Texas, to be entered into the Texas Conservation Awards Program. 18 Wildlife Intensive Leadership Development CONSERVATION LEADERS IN EVERY COMMUNITY APPLICATION DEADLINE MARCH 15, 2017 CLICK TO APPLY OR LOG ON TO FOR MORE INFO THE TEXAS BRIGADES MISSION IS TO EDUCATE AND EMPOWER YOUTHS WITH LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE IN WILDLIFE, FISHERIES, AND LAND STEWARDSHIP TO BECOME CON- SERVATION AMBASSADORS FOR A SUSTAINED NATURAL RESOURCE LEGACY. The Texas Brigades is a wildlife-focused leadership development program for high school youth (ages 13-17). There are six different camps: Bobwhite Brigade, Buckskin Brigade, Bass Brigade, Waterfowl Brigade, Ranch Brigade, and Coastal Brigade. You will be introduced to habitat management, hone your communication skills, and develop a land ethic. The state's leading wildlife and fisheries biologists and land managers serve as instructors and mentors. Each camp is 4 ½ days long. The camps are held on private ranches and at environmental camps in different areas of the state. In addition to learning animal anatomy and behavior, botany, nutrition, habitat management, population dynamics, etc., you will learn valuable leadership skills. You will write news releases, practice public speaking, and find out how to handle radio and television interviews. Through these activities, you will develop valuable life skills that will help you regardless of your career goals. If you are interested in biology, conservation, leadership, or just appreciate the outdoors, you should consider applying to one of our camps. Find a career, meet new friends, and become an ambassador for conservation. 18

19 The Texas 4-H Youth Development Program and the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation is once again pleased to offer to our senior high school 4-H members and current college students the opportunity to apply for an Opportunity Scholarship through the Texas 4-H Youth Development Foundation. This year Texas 4 -H members can apply for scholarships in three areas, baccalaureate, courageous heart, and technical. Former Texas 4-H members will be able to apply for scholarships through the collegiate scholarship program. Changes for 2017: Scores from the Old (Jan 2016 or Before) and the New (Mar 2016 or After) of the SAT test will be accepted, as well as ACT scores.
