4 Atascosa 4-H Club Info 4-H is a learn by doing youth education program for children 9 to 19. It promotes positive values, social responsibility, and lifelong learning. An af iliated program, Clover Kids, is available in some areas for children 5 to 7 (K to 2). Through 4-H and the opportunities it provides, 4-H members have the ability to participate in many events and activities, as well as apply for scholarships, travel the country, and meet new friends. Enrollment begins in August. We will also meet for training on September 27 th at 7 pm. We will be evaluating the levels of training and deciding on what we will focus on for the year. If you are a first time member, please do not bring your dog until we have the proper paperwork. We will need proof of rabies and will go over what equipment is allowed in class. 6 Inspire Kids to Do We believe in empowering kids with the skills they need to succeed. In 4 H, mentors inspire kids to be True Leaders through hands on doing empowering them to pursue their passions and chart their own course. Be an inspira on and join 30 Days of Doing. About the 30 Days 30 Days of Doing is a chance for kids across the na on to do with purpose through hands on learning. Through ac vi es in agriculture, STEM, community service, healthy living and more, 30 Days of Doing will help kids gain the skills they need to be successful in life and have fun along the way. Plus, star ng September 1 you could win a $10,000 scholarship for your kid and your state 4 H program could receive $10,000 to inspire kids in the community! Disciplines offered: Rifle - Shotgun - Pistol - Archery The next District 12 4-H Shooting Sports Coach s Certification training has been scheduled for September 22-23, 2018 at the Hidalgo County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office in Edinburg, Texas. This event is open to any/all registered and screened 4-H volunteers (age 21 and older) wishing to become certified to lead a shooting sports program in one of the following four disciplines: Rifle, Pistol, Shotgun, or Archery. There are three additional opportunities for attending this training with specific registration fees for each. The registration options to include one for youth (age 14-18) and adults (age 18-20) wishing to attend this training. There are specific registration fees applicable to all three. Coach s Assistant (Adult) age will be candidates for a Coach s Assistant certification ($150 registration fee). Coach s Assistant (Youth) Youth age who must be accompanied by a previously certified coach ($150 registration fee), this option must include the following participant as well. Previously Certified Coach (Adult) Adult age 21 and older must register ($75) and attend the certification with the registered youth interested in the Coach s Assistant - Youth option. The Previously Certified Coach will not receive any type of certification for their attendance. Fees are to cover program costs. Volunteers can only receive certification in one discipline per workshop. Registration for this event will open on 4- H Connect on August 15 th through September 7 th and Late Registration from September 8 th - 15 th (+$25 late fee). Please keep in mind that while this is being hosted in and by District 12, it is open statewide. The registration fee of $150 includes program costs, some meals, and materials. The training will begin early on Saturday, September 22 nd and conclude late afternoon on Sunday, September 23 rd. Anyone wishing to receive certification must attend the entire workshop (beginning to end) and successfully complete a written examination to be considered for certification. Special Notice: If anyone attending this workshop should need any type of accommodation to participate in this program or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact our office by September 15th Link to complete information, agenda, map, lodging, etc. 10

11 11 District 8 4-H will be hosting a Shooting Sports Coach Certification Training for Archery, Muzzleloading, Pistol, Rifle, and Shotgun in Stephenville on October 27-28, This training is open to any potential coaches across the state. Registration will be conducted through 4-H Connect at Texas.4honline.com. Look for 2018 D8 4-H Shooting Sports Coach Certification (Stephenville) (Open state-wide) Registration will be open starting September 24 and closes October 12, Cost is $120 Participants MUST have completed and passed the Background Check PRIOR to registering.

12 Join us for a healthy Pizza Making Party Tues., September 6pm Extension Office Cafeteria This year s Food Show theme is Restaurant Re-Creations, a chance to show your skills at making a favorite restaurant meal at home with healthier choices. While we are building our pizza using healthier ingredients, we will discuss how to alter those restaurant meals we love, how to read ingredient labels and the guidelines for this year s food show. 13 The County Food Show will be October 13, 2018 at 10 am at the Gillespie Annex Extension Office Cafeteria Theme is Restaurant Re-Creations New Categories: Nutritious Snacks, Main Dish, Fruits and Vegetables What is your favorite restaurant entre e? Is it an appetizer like fried cheese sticks or a main dish like Chicken Alfredo? Maybe your favorite dish is a side dish like sweet potato fries or chips and salsa? Most Americans feel an evening out with family or friends quali ies for indulging in a few extra calories. However, the low nutritional value and high calorie and fat content of some of your favorites may shock you! This year s 4-H Food Show theme, Restaurant Re-Creations, challenges you to take your favorite dish and make it a healthy one! Find ways to recreate the taste by using alternate ingredients and cooking methods. During your food show interview, discuss the substitutions of ingredients you utilized to acquire the same taste and quality as the restaurant serves. 14 Major Swine Tag Orders Due for 4-H and FFA Members 4-H Members that are planning to show swine at the major livestock shows in Texas should complete there swine tag orders by Friday September 14, Tags are $16.00 for majors or $1.00 for county only and should be paid for at the time of order. 14

15 Notable revisions and changes to Quality Counts: EVERYONE participating in state stock shows in the new season MUST complete the training, regardless if taken in the past or not. New elearning platform to better appeal to audience with enhanced visuals and learning activities. Combination presentation of content and exam to allow for exhibitors to engage in the full learning experience to receive certification. Engaging videos presented by major livestock show personnel, Extension professionals, Texas FFA representatives, previous exhibitors, and industry experts. New modules, such as: performance enhancing drugs and major livestock shows, livestock program ethics policy overview, social media tips, and more! Comprehensive exam to better gauge learning outcomes. Three age-level specific courses and exams. More information on the new Quality Counts will be posted once it becomes available. 16 Atascosa County Livestock Show Commercial Heifer Validation Commercial Heifer Validation for the Atascosa County Junior Livestock Show will take place on Saturday September 29, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Perry Feeders. Major and County Broiler Orders Due Individuals that want to show Broilers at the Majors are at the County Livestock Show should submit your orders to the Atasco-sa County Extension office. Major Show Broilers will be $1.50 per bird and County Broilers will be $1.75 per bird. Birds must be ordered in increments of 25 with a maximum of 75 chicks per exhibitor or family. Orders should also be turned in by September 14, If you have questions please contact the Atascosa County Extension Office at (830) or your local Ag Science Instructor. 16

18 Community Service & Leadership Opportunities Atascosa 4-H Fundraiser Double Trouble Steer & Heifer Prospect Show Belt Buckle sponsors needed - $ 250, $125, $50 or $25. 4-Hers and Adult volunteers needed starting Friday, November 2nd and Saturday, November 3rd for early registration, ring man, setup, and cleanup. Atascosa County Fair We will set up Friday, October 5th. If you can help work in the ring or general set up, we will need volunteers also on day of the fair, October 6th. A lot of work takes place before, during, and after the County Fair. Please contact Dale Rankin (830) for more info. Atascosa County Livestock Show Fundraiser The 2018 ACLS Fundraiser has been cancelled. The scholarship committee has decided to hold a scholarship raffle to make up for card deck raffle at the fundraiser. The raffle will consist of a CZP-10c 9mm Pistol, Weatherby SA Gauge Shotgun, Remington 700 CDL Rifle. Fire arms were provided by Primos Feed Store. An ORCA 58 quart ice chest was also donated by MG Building Material. Tickets will be available through Atascosa County Livestock Show Directors through January 19, The raffle will take place at the ACLS sale on Saturday night. 20 Livestock Project Information Guide for Exhibitors in Atascosa County Dale Rankin County Extension Agent AG/NR Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Atascosa County Updated 6/8/2018 This list by species is for reference only. You should look at the individual stock show rules to look at your project s individual information. Beef Projects Steers should be approximately 13 to 17 months of age at the time of show. (Born September through December) Steers weigh between 1000 and 1400 lbs at the time of show. (ACLS minimum is 900 lbs) Heifers are shown by age and normally show from 6 months to two years of age (Heifers have to be registered). You need to look at each shows individual rules. (ACLS has a Pen Commercial Heifer show and they are not required to be registered) Heifers going to the majors have to be validated in June for the State Fair and October for other majors. Participants should contact extension office In April and August for heifer UIN orders. Steer Ear Tag orders are due in April Steer Validation will take place in June Heifer Registration Paperwork must be completed before November 1. County and Major Show Signup and entries due in November January is the County Livestock Show State Fair entries due in August February and March is Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston and Star Of Texas Livestock show. October is the State Fair of Texas Prospect shows go on almost year round across the state. Please look at each individual show for specific schedule and rules. Goat Projects Market Goats should be approximately 8 to 12 months of age at the time of show ( lbs) (ACLS is 60 lbs to 115 lbs) Most market goats are shown as weathers. Breeding Goats are shown by age and are shown as registered animals in most shows but please look at each individuals show rules. (Atascosa County has a breeding goat show, Weather Doe Show, Weather does have to be validated.) (San Antonio has a weather doe show as well and they have to be validated) Lamb and Goat tags are ordered in August for all shows except the State Fair and those orders are due in April. Lamb and Goat validation will take place in October for most shows except for the State Fair which takes place in June. ( San Antonio has a Weather Dam Show) Lamb and Goat tags are ordered in August for all shows except the State Fair and those orders are due in April. Lamb and Goat validation will take place in October for most shows except for the State Fair which takes place in June. County and Major Show Signup and entries due in November January is the County Livestock Show State Fair entries are due in August February and March is Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston and Star Of Texas Livestock show in Austin. Swine Project Market Swine should be approximately 6 months old at the time of show The Atascosa County Livestock Show the current weight range was from 190 to 280 lbs Major shows are currently from 240 to 280 pounds at the time of show. Swine Ear tag are ordered in August with the exception of the State Fair Tags and those should be ordered in April. Swine are validated in June for the State Fair and in November for the other Major Shows. County and Major Show Signup and entries due in November January is the County Livestock Show State Fair entries due in August February and March is Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston and Star Of Texas Livestock show in Austin. 22 Livestock Project Information Guide for Exhibitors in Atascosa County continued... Rabbit Project Rabbit Validation for the Atascosa County Livestock Show is held in December at the Show Barn Breeders need to be contacted individually to breed Rabbits for the targeted show (A list is available in the Extension Office). You want to be able tell them the exact date of the show as rabbits must not weigh over 5 lbs 8 oz with a 2oz tolerance at show. Minimum weight of 3lbs 8 oz. Breeders should be contacted in the summer to help them prepare for the breeding season. Meat Pen Rabbits are Californian and New Zealand ( More Californians are shown normally) that are exhibited at our show Rabbits are shown in a pen of 3. Most exhibiters validate 4 to 5 in a pen to get to the best three. The Atascosa County Livestock Show and most shows follow the American Rabbit Breeder s Association, Inc. (ARBA) Standard of Perfection. Rabbits must conform to standard of their breed as so stated in the ARBA Standard of Perfection and be free from any elimination and disqualification including but not limited to any sign of disease, ear canker are sore hocks. The County Show is in January. Poultry Project Broilers are ordered in September Each Show has there own order system. Turkeys are ordered in May/June and arrive in October Houston and San Antonio and Star of Texas Broilers Arrive in January County and Major Show Signup and entries due in November January is the County Livestock Show February and March is San Antonio, Houston and Austin Turkey and Broiler Shows.
