2 Texas A&M Veterinary School Open House Texas A&M s Veterinary School Open House is scheduled for Saturday, April 20, For more information go to: or contact the Gregg County Extension Office. Howard College Lamb & Goat Camps Lamb & Goat Camps are once again being offered at Howard College in Big Spring. THESE ARE OUTSTANDING CAMPS and they fill up quickly! Reservations are accepted on a first come first served basis and they limit the camps to the first 200 paid entries. So...If you are interested in attending, you should send your entry in today! The cost is $85.00 per person (Housing is not included). Adult supervision is required. Registration forms are available from the Gregg County Extension Office. The dates for the camp are as follows: Goat Camp - June 2-4, 2013 Lamb Camp - June 9-11, 2013 *******************4-H Livestock Club****************** The next meeting for the 4-H Livestock Club will be on April 9, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gregg County Extension Auditorium H Volunteer Conference The H Volunteer Conference will be held in Plano, Texas on July 12-14, A variety of educational workshops will be provided. More information will be provided on the volunteer conference webpage: Registration is open on 4-H Connect from: April 15 June 30, 2013
3 County 4-H Roundup PUBLIC SPEAKING, METHOD DEMONSTRATION AND SHARE-THE FUN TIME IS HERE!!! County 4-H Roundup is set for Monday, April 1, 2013 at the Liberty City Community Center. To get to the Liberty City Community Center you can take I-20 West and then take the Overton/Liberty City exit, FM You will then take a right onto FM 3053 at the stop sign past the Whataburger. You will come to a 4-way stop (there is a bank on the corner) and continue going straight through the 4-way stop. The Community Center is located on the right diagonally across from the Sabine School tennis courts and immediately before you get to the Sabine Elementary School. The Community Center is located less than a mile from the interstate. If you have any specific questions about how to get there, please call the Extension office. The deadline to sign up was March 19, District 4-H Roundup is set for Saturday, April 27, 2013, at Angelina College in Lufkin. Public speaking is a stand alone category. The time frame is 5-7 minutes. The presentation should persuade others regarding a particular issue. No props or visual aids are allowed. Educational presentations - (For individuals or groups of up to 5 members. The presentation time limit is 12 minutes). Categories include: Beef, Clothing & Textiles, Companion Animals, Computer Technology, Family Life, Health, Horse (1 to 2 members), Open Ag & Natural Resources Category, Open Family & Consumer Sciences Category, Promote 4-H, Safety & Injury Prevention, and Sheep and/or Goats. THE SCHEDULE FOR COUNTY ROUNDUP IS AS FOLLOWS: Check-In.5:30 p.m. Contestant s Orientation...6:00 p.m. Contest Begins....6:15 p.m. Share-The-Fun (for individuals or groups of 2-9 members. There is a 6 minute performance time limit) Categories include: - Poetry/Prose - Vocal - Musical - Solo/Band Performance TRACTOR SUPPLY 4-H PAPER CLOVER FUNDRAISER The spring Paper Clover fundraiser is happening May 8 th -19 th in all Tractor Supply Company stores. There are several exciting features that have been added to this spring s promotion: ** TSC will be offering a $5.00 Paper Clover available for purchases in addition to the $1.00 option ** a Purina coupon will be attached to each Paper Clover ** a new incentive program for counties to receive additional funds; and ** a regional 4-H award winner, which will award $1,000 to the top performing state in each 4-H region
4 2013 EAST DISTRICT 5 4-H FASHION SHOWCASE (for Junior, Intermediate, and Senior 4-H members) In addition to the District 4-H Fashion Show being held on Saturday, April 27th, the following contests will also be offered: Fashion Storyboards - MUST BE TURNED IN by Thursday, April 18, 2013 UNLESS YOU ARE BRINGING IT WITH YOU THE DAY OF THE DISTRICT FASHION SHOW. Fashion Storyboards must be entered on 4-H Connect by April 10, 2013 and there is a $7.00 contest entry fee. Participants may enter only one storyboard. The Fashion Storyboard Label must be securely affixed to the back of the storyboard. The label MUST be legibly printed or typed and MUST be complete, including the answer to the Originality of Design question. The 4-H member should not put his/her name on the front. The label can be found on the following website: Categories: A. Wearable: Clothing that can be worn. Includes items such as pants, shorts, skirts, blouses, sweaters, coats, dresses, etc. B. Accessory: Includes items such as belts, purses, bags, hats, etc. C. Jewelry: Includes necklaces, bracelets, rings, and earrings. D. Non-Wearable: Includes items such as pillows, organizers, holiday items, stuffed animals, items for the home, etc. E. Pet Clothing: Includes items that can be worn by a pet or any other animal. The 2013 Fashion Storyboard theme is: Be True to Who You Are Window WOWed - DISTRICT CONTEST ONLY - MUST SET UP SATURDAY, APRIL 27, 2013 AT Angelina College, Lufkin, Texas The idea for this contest is for teams of up to five (5) members of any age to design a window display using merchandizing and marketing techniques to market fashion merchandise and products. Guidelines follow: 4-H must be incorporated into the display. Display area is 8 feet long, 8 feet high, and 30 inches wide. One 8 foot table will be provided. Display can start from the table or from the floor. Creativity is encouraged. Teams must provide everything they use in the display. Participants will have an hour and 30 minutes to complete the display. All teams will start and stop simultaneously. Theme: Be True to Who You Are The deadline to enter on 4-H connect is April 10th and there is a $7.00 entry fee. Taps, Tassels and Tacks: Shoe Fun - District Contest only - Decorate a shoe and bring to the Showcase. Judging will be based on creativity, originality and workmanship. Decorations may be purchased or handmade. No entry to exceed 14 X 24 X24. Don t forget to incorporate 4-H in the theme. Theme: Add Some Clover to Your 4-H Project Style! This is not a team event and there is no entry fee.
5 18th Annual Harvest Festival Crawfish Boil When: Saturday, April 20, 2013 First Seating: 3-6 P.M. Second Seating: 7-10 P.M. Where: Maude Cobb Activity Center * The 2nd Seating (7-10 p.m.) is sold out! (Youth workers will receive complimentary tickets for the 1st seating (3-6 p.m.) Be sure to come by the Extension office by Wednesday, April 17th to pick up your ticket.) The deadline to sign up to work is April 4, Youth workers must be at least 14 years old. Volunteers Needed for the Longview PRCA Rodeo - April 19th & April 20th - Each year the Longview Greggton Rotary Club puts on the Longview PRCA Rodeo at the Longview Fairgrounds. This is the same Rotary Club that gives so generously to the Gregg County 4-H Program. Each year, the Rotary Club requests 4-H leaders and 4-H club members to help to work the rodeo with things like distributing programs at the gate and working in the V.I.P. tent. If you can help out by working at the Rodeo on Friday, April 19th or Saturday, April 20th, please call the Gregg County Extension Office to let us know. When you call we can provide you with more details including the time you would be needed to work. 7 Online 4-H Record Book System!!! Basic instructions and the Instruction Guide for the new 4-H Record Book System can be found at: 4hreports.com. Highlights of the online 4-H record Book include: Different forms for each age group based on age appropriateness (Junior, Intermediate, Senior - progressive in nature) Added goal setting section for Junior & Intermediates No more record book objectives No more resume for Seniors Added Career Exploration section for Seniors It is important that 4-H members begin working on the record book NOW! 4-H members should be making and inputting project goals for the current 4-H year. You should also be taking pictures of project work and activities. Also, be sure to keep a journal of your project activities and note what was learned through the project experiences Horse Validation - 4-H Connect Horse Validation will be done through 4-H Connect. All 4-H horse projects, including futurity horses, must be owned and validated on or before May 1st of each year Horse Validation period is: March 1, 2013 to April 15, 2013 $10.00 per horse April 16, 2013 to May 1, 2013 $20.00 per horse Please contact the Gregg County Extension office if you are interested in the District 4-H Horse Show. The District 4-H Horse Show will be June 25th at the Henderson County Fair Complex in Athens Attention Teen 4-H Members: District 5 4-H Leadership Lab The District 5 4-H Leadership Lab will be held on June 19-21, (This is a tentative date) 4-H ers age 13 and older are eligible to attend. Don t miss your opportunity to attend the D-5 4-H Leadership Lab which will be conducted at Texas 4-H Conference Center at Lake Brownwood. Deadline to register is May 15, 2013
8 STEER PROJECTS Attention: All 4-H ers interested in showing a steer for the 2013 Harvest Festival & Livestock Show or for the 2013 Major Livestock Shows: If you plan to have a steer project, we ask that you come by the office to order and pay for State mandated ear tags for validation. The deadline to come by to order the steer ear tags is April 17th and the tags are priced at $8.00 each. Without an order for an ear tag, you will not be able to show your steer at the above mentioned shows. State Fair Lamb & Goat Ear Tag Order Deadline If you are planning on showing lambs or goats at the State Fair of Texas, the deadline to order ear tags is April 16th. The ear tags are $8.00 each and must be paid for when you place the order. STATE FAIR SWINE EAR TAG ORDER DEADLINE If you would like to show a hog at the State Fair of Texas the deadline to order ear tags is April 19th. The cost is $8.00 per tag. You must pay for the tags when you place your order. Hogs must be validated in order to be shown at the State Fair of Texas. 4-H Welding - Project dates have been set for the Welding Class for this year. The dates are: April 2, 9, 16, 23, 30, May 7, 14, 21, 28 and June 4, These are on Tuesday evenings and Mr. Daniels. Projects made can be entered at the Harvest Festival Livestock Show in October.
