This section of the bill did not pss becuse of the discrepncies nd is the only section of the SGA budget tht hs not been pssed. The trdition of plnting mgnoli tree on Founder s Dy in honor of Elon University s founders begn s one of Elon s first fundrising efforts. This fundrising continues with Elon Dy, which hs rised ELON DAY ORIGINS Five yers go, Elon University mde the trnsition from Founder s Dy to Elon Dy, the university s biggest dy of giving. more thn $2.8 million in the pst five yers. When the progrm first begn in 2014, more thn $117,000 ws rised. And lst yer, more thn $1 million ws rised. To lunch Elon Dy, the university sked lumni nd students to post pictures on Mrch 13 in their fvorite Elon pprel to show school pride. Across the ntion, lumni gthered to celebrte Elon Dy nd give bck finncilly. John Brnill, ssistnt vice president for university dvncement, believes Elon hs specil community nd network other universities don t. I think there is pride in lot of different universities, but there is something different bout Elon, Brnhill sid. Elon Dy is dy where you get to celebrte Elon, put your best Elon T-shirt on nd tke picture wherever you re in the world. Not ll Elon students re ble to be on cmpus to join their fellow student body in the celebrtions. Around 250 students re currently brod, ccording to the Globl Eduction Center. For students currently studying brod, Elon mde sure they ren t missing out on events tht hppened on Elon Dy. We hve hd chpter here for few yers now nd it is relly gret to get together nd give lumni living in new nd different country sense of fmilirity nd community through Elon, Luckhurst sid. We met in very lively pub clled The Fellow nd enjoyed gret food, drinks nd converstion. Elon Dy begn Wednesdy morning with College Coffee, where students, lumni nd stff ttended. The university chllenged the Elon community to donte 1,250 gifts before college coffee t 9:30.m. to the Eduction Advisory Bord s Scholrship Chllenge in order to fund new $100,000 student scholrship. Donors succeeded in funding this scholrship, nd Elon Dy s first chllenge ws completed. The bord of trustees nnounced Wednesdy morning they would begin mtching gifts. Trustee Jenne Robertson nd her husbnd Jerry Robertson greed to mtch ny dontion mde to the Phoenix Club or the Elon thletics progrms t up to $100,000. Americn Bnker Stephen Pneyko nd his wife Susie Pneyko, prents of sophomore Juli Pneyko, encourged donors to give to Elon s Gretest Needs by doubling gifts up to $100,000. Senior Srh Stcki sid they lwys hve opportunities for seniors to give to school. I didn t give much, but I did give something. Hopefully when I m n lumni I will give bck more, Stcki sid. As public helth mjor, Stcki felt compelled to give to the deprtment of public helth. This yer s Elon Dy fell two weeks fter President Book begn her presidency. This is such gret dy for the community, for everyone to hve dy where we set side to chmpion the university nd ll tht it provides to young people nd our lumni out there, Book sid. Wht I love bout it is this intense 24 hours where we remember the opportunities tht unfolded for us t Elon. The university hs $211.4 million endowment, which is $31,129 per both undergrdute nd grdute student. According to report done by the Ntionl Assocition of College nd University Business Officers, the medin endowment size is $90 million. All of this is prt of fundrising, Brnhill sid, referring to Elon s fcilities. Most, or mny, students ssume this just hppens nturlly, tht ll the money tht is needed is here. But it s not. We sk for it. Brnhill himself is donor to Elon, long with over 75 percent of the university s stff. He believes it is becuse the fculty nd stff believe in the progrms nd scholrships t the school nd wnt to give bck. Hnnh Delcourt, clss of 14, stys connected to the school by giving finncilly. She felt compelled to donte to becuse of the effect Elon hs hd on her. Delcourt ttended the Wilmington Elon Dy event t the resturnt on the Cpe Fer River, Wterline. BY THE NUMBERS $117K Around $117,000 ws rised in 2014 when Elon Dy ws lunched. $250K Elon Dy rised this yer, s of 5 p.m. Wednesdy, Mrch 13. $2.8M Over the course of five yers, $2.8 million hs been rised. 76% Out of Elon Univeristy s stff, more thn 76 percent re donors. 3,337 gifts were rised this yer, s of 7 p.m. on Wednesdy, Mrch 13. Seeing ech yer not just the mount people donte but the number of dontions lso shows lumni both ner nd fr, old nd young, re thinking those sme thoughts nd reminiscing bout the impct Elon mde on their lives, nd tht is n incredibly specil feeling, Delcourt sid. So in wy, Elon Dy connects everyone with love for Elon through the ct of giving.

The desire is to mke sure tht we re providing the spces needed by our students, Moore sid. As we continue to estblish nd enhnce our residentil cmpus, s we hve more students on cmpus, we will need more menities.... We will continue to be working on projects, but mybe not t the sme frntic pce we hve been working t the pst couple of yers. With ll the current nd future construction on the horizon, Elon will be burdened with incresed energy consumption to power these new buildings. Growing Energy Energy consumption ccounted for 48 percent of Elon s totl greenhouse gs emissions in Emissions per 1,000 squre feet hve decresed by 25.2 percent becuse of energy conservtion efforts such s LED lighting. But, net crbon emissions incresed by 10.3 percent from 2008 to 2017 becuse of the school s expnsion. But the culprit isn t just cmpus buildings this rise is lso ttributed to trnsporttion emissions nd solid wste. Elon ttrcts mny students for its robust study brod progrm. Study brod trvel ccounted for 20 percent of ll emissions in Though this dds to crbon costs, study brod is something Elon will never get rid of, ccording to Eline Durr, director of sustinbility. It is probbly going to increse, nd so how do we mitigte tht? How do we increse eduction nd wreness mong the student body, nd wht re our venues for offsetting [crbon emissions]? Tht s wht we re looking t, Durr sid. Durr trcks these chnges s she tckles the sustinbility mster pln s gol of complete crbon neutrlity by We hve n mount of emissions. Then we hve offsets, nd so it subtrcts to get net zero mount. Idelly tht s the gol, Durr sid of the pln. As with lot of cmpuses, we struggle with the growth of cmpus nd then lso trying to work on reducing emissions. A Blncing Act Sustinbility isn t just bout doing wht s best for the environment, ccording to Durr. It is n eqution tht incorportes three vribles: people, plnet nd prosperity. In other words, doing wht s best for the environment, society nd the economy. Sustinbility hs ll three legs of tht tringle, sid Tom Flood, director of grounds nd lndscping nd ssistnt director of Physicl Plnt. We hve to remember tht when we tlk bout sustinbility, it s not just the plnet it s lso the people tht re involved nd the finncil side of it. Moore sys tht s privte university with no stte funding, Elon needs to mke key decisions bout where best to invest. Risking newly reserched green building techniques such s using concrete nd steel engineered to be lighter nd more efficient could end up costing too much. We re ddressing the needs s they develop on our cmpus, nd we re trying to do it in very sustinble wy, Moore sid. So I think we hve good blnce. Sustinbility isn t just n dministrtive gol. Elon students cn become Eco-Reps students who work to educte their peers bout sustinbility nd promote environmentl nd sustinbility projects. Sophomore Tylor McFdden serves s n Eco-Rep. She sid this yer, Eco-Reps re trying to encourge more students to think bout wste reduction, composting nd recycling prctices. While the dining fcilities lredy use mny compostble products, such s food continers nd to-go boxes, McFdden sid it comes down to the students. Students ply huge prt in how sustinble Elon relly is, McFdden sid. With the composting to-go boxes, lot of students use them, but lot of times we re seeing them in the trsh, nd students don t find it convenient to throw it in compost bin or to sort their trsh to see wht goes in ech bin. Going Green Elon closely monitors power consumption by ech building nd hs 27 buildings certified by Ledership in Energy nd Environmentl Design (LEED). A LEED building hs four levels of certifiction bsed on severl fctors, including energy efficiency, wter efficiency nd sustinble mterils. It hs to be certin percentge more efficient thn building tht meets stndrd energy code. According to Durr, Elon is similr to other institutions in trgeting the Silver rnking s the stndrd, but there re nine Gold buildings, including Lindner Hll. Newer buildings t Elon re ment to blend in with the historic Georgin-style buildings constructed in the 1900s by using brick, sustinble nd durble locl resource, but they re constructed to be more energy-efficient. Environmentl studies professor Robert Chrest sid he doesn t like how Elon s cmpus looks s if it were built in He thinks Elon could be constructing better, more energy-efficient buildings, even if they lose the clssic, historic look. I think we should be doing better thn LEED certifiction, which just gives brgging rights, Chrest sid. We should be trying to do more. But, to chieve the LEED Silver rting, costs of construction go up pproximtely 3 to 5 percent, ccording to Moore. Flood sid it is in the university s best interest to spend energy wisely. Another effort is the energy conservtion in ction pln. Physicl Plnt hs been dding meters nd controls to most of the buildings on cmpus, including Schr Hll, Koury Business Center, Lindner Hll, Long Hll, Steers Pvilion, Belk Pvilion, the Crl Woods Center, Hrden Club Sports, Holt Chpel nd the Tphouse. The control system is ble to tighten the energy use in ech building nd, in some cses, ech room by controlling ir conditioning nd lighting. The system is synchronized with reservtion system to mke sure the room is set t comfortble temperture for the spn of the reservtion time before going bck into sleep mode. This pilot progrm is giving us some dt on how this is working, wht issues we re going to run into nd how much we will be ble to sve in energy costs, Flood sid. Other inititives to sve on energy use include tree plntings to offset Elon s crbon emissions, which occur off cmpus, nd incresed dining composting, locl nd orgnic food nd beverge purchsing nd sustinbility progrms t Loy Frm. Chrest nd Durr gree tht Loy Frm is true exmple of sustinbility in ll res. Chrest helped found Loy Frm nd the sustinble rchitecture deprtment locted on the premises. The Grow Biointensive progrm is n orgnic method of sustinble food system production, focused on proper dieting. The food hrvested by student volunteers is mostly used by Elon s Cmpus Kitchen to mke mels for Allied Churches of Almnce County, which provides resources for the hungry nd homeless in the re. Additionlly, Chrest wnts Loy Frm to serve s Living nd Lerning Community, but insted of dorms, this LLC will consist of tiny homes sttioned beside the Loy Frm grden. Chrest sys he hs developed model for building code- nd zoning-complint tiny home community. He hopes tht his ide comes to fruition in the next three to five yers. To qulify for Bronze, college needs t lest 25 points; to qulify for Silver, 50 points; to qulify for Gold, 65 points; to qulify for Pltinum, 85 points. Elon received the Silver rnking with score of in its most recently submitted report in Other North Crolin cmpuses, such s Applchin Stte University, North Crolin Stte University, Furmn University, University of North Crolin t Chpel Hill nd University of North Crolin t Greensboro, were mong the 93 schools to score Gold, nd Elon shred the Silver rting with 152 other schools. From the STARS report dt, Elon did extremely well in the coordintion, plnning nd governnce ctegory, meeting 7.3 out of the eight objectives. It lso received fir scores for diversity nd ffordbility, public enggement, cmpus enggement nd reserch. But, Elon scored poorly compred to peer institutions in dining, buildings nd wter opertions nd received zero points for innovtion. According to Durr, Elon will qulify for ll four points in innovtion in the new report. Finding the Blnce Since every institution hs different formul for sustinbility, it is difficult to compre sustinbility between cmpuses. The environment, economic costs nd socil fbrics re different. But Chrest, who thinks Elon cn be doing more in terms of environmentl sustinbility, still describes Elon s responsible institution. Responsibility is more thn just sustinbility, Chrest sid. Responsibility is much broder umbrell of fctors to tke into considertion.... There s the finncil helth of the project nd of the environment, nd the context. We lso hve to look t the helth nd welfre of the people ffected. He sys Elon does gret job t mediting between ll the different fctors, nd Moore grees. I think we hve pretty good blnce of meeting the needs of the community but lso doing it in very sustinble wy, Moore sid. She helps them get dressed, mkes sure they hve their homework completed nd pcked up in their Frozen themed bckpcks, ets brekfst with them nd sends them off to school. This is n everydy routine for mny single mothers round the world, but for Cummings it s little different. Cummings, 36, nd her two youngest children, six-yer-old Rhniy nd two-yer-old Jzih, re living t Allied Churches of Almnce County, locted on the outskirts of downtown Burlington nd in the only homeless shelter in the county. Allied Churches mission is to prevent nd end homelessness nd food insecurity in Almnce County. The shelter is open 24/7, providing n rry of services including food, clothing nd temporry home for those who hve no plce to sty. According to the North Crolin Colition to End Homelessness, 0.19 percent of the ntionl popultion is homeless while in North Crolin tht number is 0.12 percent. In comprison, 0.09 percent of Almnce County s popultion is living without home. Cummings nd her dughters re prt of tht 0.09 percent. She sys if it weren t for the shelter, she would be lost. I don t hve roof over my hed. If I got put out of here, I don t know wht I d do. But Cummings does hve some fmily support t the shelter. Rhniy nd Jzih s unt, Sslee Tborn, nd her children re currently living t Allied Churches s well. At 28 yers old, Tborn hs five children whose ges rnge from 1 month to 9 yers old. But even during this difficult time without home or job, she is strightforwrd with them bout their sitution. Tborn hs hd severl jobs in the lst few yers, but becuse of mternity leve nd tking cre of her children, she sys it is hrd to keep job, which dds to the difficulty of the sitution. It only gets stressful when I m not working, Tborn sid. I know I need things done, nd me knowing tht I cn t give them [the children] things tht they need, it stresses me out. But I lwys keep strong mindset nd tell them tht things re going to be OK. I m going to tke cre of them. I m going to do wht I hve to do. Though she does not like the term, Tborn is willing to dmit tht she is homeless. But she sys this lbel is not going to keep her from working hrd to improve their qulity of life nd crete bright, stble future. You never wnt to sy tht you re homeless, Tborn sid. I ctully ws homeless youth growing up, nd so lot of the services tht Allied Churches provide to the community, s youth I ctully utilized lot of those services in different cpcities. Cummings is sitting on the floor mong the clutter of her belongings, unpcking nd trying to envision her new life in her own prtment. Though still unemployed, she is keeping positive outlook nd her hed high. After I get myself situted nd stble, I m going to find job nd get my kids situted, Cummings sid. But, Jn Fuller, university chplin, sid tht though the remining Christin denomintions re hevily divided, the 2,008 non-ctholic Christin students need to be viewed s one when compring numbers. If you tke the rest of the Christin denomintions nd you dd them together, you get bout 2000, Fuller sid. Tht s pretty close it s just tht the list of those other denomintions is very long. Tht list consists of 33 different Christin denomintions represented on Elon s cmpus. The Protestnt Church is very denomintionlly divided church, Fuller sid. Unlike other Christin denomintions, the Romn Ctholic Church is unified through single spokesperson, Pope Frncis. Ctholicism is ccountble to the pope, nd the structure ll builds its wy to the pope, Fuller sid. Wht binds it ll together is structure nd long trdition. Ctholicism s culture nd community Ctholicism stretches beyond being just religion there is culture behind it. One of those culturl norms is tht Ctholics re supposed to bstin from eting met on Fridys for Lent. Peter Trembly, ssocite chplin for Ctholic life, dheres to this trdition. I love hving nice sndwich with met in it, but there is n experience of community we re trying to build becuse in lot of wys, students feel s if most identities on cmpus re celebrted, except uthentic religious identities, Trembly sid. One of those students is sophomore Riley McCrossn, who pprecites how CCM brings people who shre common vlues together. Being on college cmpus, there re obviously lifestyles tht re relly prevlent, nd not everyone will wnt to be involved in lifestyles such s those, McCrossn sid. Just the hook-up culture nd drinking. College cn be crzy, nd while it s nice to hve fun, it s lso nice to be ble to len bck on people. Though CCM llows students to get wy from tht spect of college culture, it is not overly religious nd plces more vlue on the community. Being prt of CCM is not even s much pressure to ctully be very prcticing Ctholic, it s just community on cmpus, nd it s not stereotypicl of wht people would put lbel on, McCrossn sid. I think it s relly esy thing to get on bord with, nd more people should look into it. Keller completely grees. I love tht Ctholicism is universl. It s beutiful religion tht ws founded by Jesus Christ himself, nd it s something tht I ve relly come to pprecite in my trvels round the world, Keller sid. Ctholicism my be unified under the pope, but divisions exist regrdless. The Pendulum reported in 2002 tht conflicting views on socil issues existed within CCM regrding women s roles in Ctholicism, divorce, priest celibcy nd the use of contrceptives. Speking up for your fith According to Trici McCrthy, coordintor of fith formtion, not everyone is willing to ccept religion s something legitimte nd worthy of their time. I think for our students, even though it is the mjority religion on cmpus, it s still very difficult to prctice ny religion t Elon, McCrthy sid. Elon is just like most of the world very seculr nd very redy to offer critique of religion, so it tkes lot for students to be willing to give up n hour week to go to Sundy mss just s most young dults re still trying to figure out wht mybe they wnt their creer to be, they re lso still wrestling with fith nd trying to figure tht out. Some students re lso frid to spek up for their fith becuse they ren t sure if they wnt to commit to nything yet. College is time of finding out who you re, Keller sid. College life nd fith re sometimes seen s polr opposites, which brings its own set of issues in form of stereotypes. Negtive stereotypes bout Ctholics tht led to misunderstnding bout their fith re further struggle tht believers on cmpus hve to fce. People re often thought of s bigots or prejudiced, or out of touch, or s indoctrinted into hteful wys of thinking, Trembly sid. To fight these stereotypes, Trembly sid the progrmming t Elon is imed t building community nd creting opportunities to go deeper into understnding one s fith. The two min negtive stereotypes the Ctholic community struggles with re ignornce nd bigotry. If you re going to believe, you hve to be ignornt of science, you hve to be ignornt of philosophy nd contemporry thought. Tht couldn t be further from the truth, Trembly sid. Anyone who is devoted to religion is somehow operting out of plce of htred for people who re different from them or live lifestyles tht re different from some of the ides nd techings we hve in the church. One of these struggles is n over-ging popultion. According to Ntionl Geogrphic, 32 percent of Ctholic church members in the United Sttes were ged 50 nd bove in By 2014, tht number rose to 50 percent. Prt of the problem is tht young people s preferences re different when it comes to fith. They re not looking for something tht s routine, but something tht s deeply meningful nd hs personl significnce, Fuller sid. All the churches re struggling with this phenomenon. I think tht is definitely struggle nd definitely this bttle tht we re fcing, but if you hve your Ctholic fith nd you believe God will give you the strength tht you need, we hve no reson to not live out our fith nd ber witness to it every dy of our lives. Turnouts t CCM or Ctholic events on Elon s cmpus re reltively high, ccording to Keller. More thn 400 students ttended the Ash Wednesdy service this yer, showing n increse of interest, which some rgue cn be expected to continue. The geogrphic distribution of Ctholics in the United Sttes hs OLIVER FISCHER ELON NEWS NETWORK lso chnged. The concentrtion hs shifted from the Northest nd Midwest to the South nd West, ccording to Ntionl Geogrphic. Fuller believes this is minly becuse of immigrtion. I think they re settling there when they come from other countries, from South Americ, from Centrl Americ, from plces in Europe or even Asi. But, it s not just foreigners who permnently settle in the United Sttes bringing bout these chnges. Mny of the migrnt workers come from Ctholic bckgrounds, Fuller sid. The Cliforni churches re bursting t the sems becuse of migrnt workers, lmost ll of them from Mexico. Figures from the Pew Reserch Center support Fuller s theory, with Hispnic Ctholics representing 26 percent of Ctholics in the Northest nd Midwest, while mking up 33 percent in the South nd 44 percent in the West. The future of Ctholicism Ctholic culture hs lwys plced high vlue on eduction. According to Trembly, Ctholic schools existed in the United Sttes before public schools did. Public schools dopted the model of Ctholic schools, Trembly sid. Prioritizing eduction hs led to economic success. When you hve economic success, birth rtes go down, Trembly sid. But low birth rtes ren t keeping youths from Ctholic fith. In the Ctholic Church, we do terrible job of pssing on fith to the next genertion, Trembly sid. They were never deeply brought into the fith, I don t think. Their fith often cme from plce of obligtion they were told you hve to go to church, they were told you hve to pry or there were these terrible consequences. These older genertions mde pece with tht nd went through these rituls. The Ctholic community does not overshdow other non-christin religions. Trembly invites other communities, such s the Muslim community, to interfith dinners where students lern bout other religions. The presence of severl other universities in the Tringle could pose chllenge to Elon, s its potentil could be overlooked. But Sheridn believes Elon will still be ble to prtner with Amzon in business. Involvement nd in mny wys over-involvement is centrl prt of Elon University s culture. Within the first two weeks on cmpus, new students re thrust into the Orgniztion Fir where they re encourged to sign up for student orgniztions cross cmpus. Elon s commitment to experientil lerning is communicted in dmissions brochures nd orienttion weekends. Students lptops nd bckpcks re decorted with stickers nd buttons bosting the numerous orgniztions nd ctivities they re involved in. At Elon, not only is there pressure to be involved in multiple orgniztions nd ctivities, but there is lso immense pressure to mintin good cdemic stnding. Some orgniztions such s fellows progrms, frternities nd sororities require students to mintin specific GPA. Not only re students ttending meetings nd hving these experiences outside of the clssroom, but they re lso required to spend whtever extr time they hve left studying nd doing work for their clsses. On top of this, there is the dded pressure of socil medi. On Fcebook nd Twitter, students cn find their peers shring their ccomplishments, nnouncing they re the president of n orgniztion or tht they won n wrd for their involvement in nother. With socil medi, there s the pressure of not only being involved nd impressive, but lso letting ll of your followers know this, too. The pressure of involvement does not stnd lone. It s coupled with the pressure of seeming successful. All of this pressure hs led college students to hve higher stress levels nd students feeling like they re not enough. Extrcurriculr ctivities nd experientil lerning re vluble eductionl tools, but these experiences shouldn t come t the expense of our mentl nd physicl helth. In order to be successful students, leders, community members, employees or volunteers, we first need to be helthy. But this is not to sy tht Elon is unique in this regrd. A recent study from Jmes Mdison University found tht bout 89 percent of students surveyed find cdemic worklod to be somewht to very stressful, mking it the most stressful spect of college. In ddition, mjority of students surveyed sid they find time mngement nd extrcurriculr ctivities to be somewht to very stressful. Ech of these fctors re stressful for college students on their own, but more often thn not students re juggling ll of these experiences t once. When they re ll re compounded into one student s life, high stress levels re inevitble. These higher levels of stress stem ll the wy from childhood, too. A different study found 29 percent of teenge children worry bout getting into good college or getting job, wheres only 5 percent of prents see this s n issue for their children. Even s kids, we re worried bout ELENA HERNANDEZ DESIGNER our futures. Involvement in extrcurriculr ctivities mkes us more mrketble job pplicnts nd dds lines to our resumés, but we should consider the cost. As I st wtching the Oscrs erlier this month, I ws so hppy to see Frnces McDormnd tking time to recognize ll of the women being honored t the Oscrs. During her cceptnce speech for Best Actress, she sked ll the women nominted in every ctegory to stnd. But, s the cmers pnned cross the room, most of the smiling fces were those of white women, becuse white, ffluent women re lmost lwys the ones being celebrted in these situtions. McDormnd could ve used her pltform to mke sttement on the lck of representtion of women of color, queer women nd trns folks in the udience, but insted, she neglected to comment on tht. She didn t show how different women s experiences re when considering other forms of oppression. She did wht most white feminists do used her position to tlk only bout the issues tht pertin to her identities. The #MeToo movement hs become disproportiontely focused on the experiences of white women in Hollywood nd politics, even though it ws founded by blck womn. These re women who hve the privilege of putting their creers on the line in the nme of gender equlity. But more vulnerble groups do not hve tht privilege. For womn who cn t fford to lose her job, speking up ginst sexul hrssment in the workplce isn t vible option. And then there re those women who use their pink hts to promote gender equlity, without recognizing tht not ll women hve the sme genitls s them. Using femle genitli s mscot for the women s movement excludes trns, nonbinry nd intersex folks, who deserve just s much of plce in feminism s everyone else. As women fighting for the rights of other women, it is importnt we recognize the wys in which you my be dding to the oppression of other women. We cnnot tlk bout the fight for gender equlity without recognizing the vrying grievnces tht occur for women with different, intersecting identities. If you re not considering how vstly different people s experiences my be, then you re excluding women from the nrrtive of equlity nd representtion. All women who ttend Elon University re privileged to be receiving this eduction, but mny Elon students re privileged for number of other resons, such s their socioeconomic sttus or rce. Here t Elon, we hve numerous resources to educte ourselves on gender equlity nd issues fcing women of ll bckgrounds, llowing us to be better dvoctes nd llies. These resources include orgniztions nd offices such s the Gender nd LGBTQIA Center, Crossrods, Elon Feminists for Equlity, Chnge nd Trnsformtion (EF- FECT) nd Students Promoting Awreness, Chnge nd Empowerment (SPACE), nd clsses within the Women s, Gender nd Sexulity Studies minor. We need to recognize tht women cn be s much of the problem s they re prt of the solution. We need to ctively work towrds educting ourselves so we cn be feminists who include everyone. And, there s much to sy bout the involvement of men s well. Men t Elon re immensely privileged nd should be using their position to mplify the voices of ll women, not just those they interct with. We shouldn t cre bout women just becuse they re our sisters or mothers or friends, but becuse they re humn beings, just like everyone else. A successful movement towrd equlity begins with eduction. Tke time to educte yourself bout issues surrounding ll women before you use your pltform to only dvocte for women who look or ct like you. We should be celebrting nd mplifying the voices of women from vrious bckgrounds every dy, not just on Interntionl Women s Dy. Feminism isn t just bout the equlity of one type of womn, but of every womn, regrdless of their sexulity, gender ssigned t birth, socioeconomic sttus, ntionlity, rce or bility. Abby Corrign lifted her hed nd stred into the udience. This ws Echoes. This show is prticulrly meningful to me becuse it s the lst time I will be performing on stge t Elon, Corrign sid. I feel s if I m leving my time here by doing three incredibly thought-provoking works tht the udience will surely enjoy. Echoes, the spring dnce concert, fetured originl modern choreogrphy from Elon University fculty performed by the Bchelor of Fine Arts dnce mjors. For Corrign nd other dncers in the show, the choreogrphy ws more thn leps, jumps nd turns. Dnce is not just estheticlly plesing nd pretty to wtch, but incredibly impctful nd meningful method of communiction, she sid. Ech of these pieces impcts the udience in different wy so tht they will leve the theter not just feeling entertined, but lso chnged. Behind the intricte costumes, stunning lights nd cptivting moves of ech piece ws story. Dncers such s sophomore Mx O Connell finds communicting the story is hrder thn nything else. We hve to describe storyline through set of movement, nd tht s definitely the hrdest prt for me side from the thletic stuff, the jumps nd turns, O Connell sid. It s relly finding tht humnistic thing without using ny words. For some dncers in Echoes, such s senior Juli Goldberg, the humnity resonted deeply. I portry the role of someone who is in room full of people, but still feels lone, Goldberg sid. I especilly connect to this t the end of the piece when the other dncers hve stopped moving nd I m dncing lone. I truly feel tht I cn tell the story in this moment. Ech of the seven pieces in the show hd its own messge. Junior Lindsey Bischel performed in the piece Piju. The piece is nmed fter the villge in Mount Everest, telling the story of struggle, something tht everyone resontes with. From n emotionl portryl of the story, trying to move pst something hs its own impct on every dncer, Bischel sid. And the womn who mde ll the mgic hppen, director Luren Kerns, hd the dunting tsk of orgnizing ll the pieces into one, cohesive story. I m interested in creting thetricl experience for the udience, Kerns sid. The movement composition, music nd design elements ll work together to help crete specific mood. I spend lot of time thinking bout how to best connect ll of the pieces to crete dynmic nd drmtic rc. Of the seven pieces in the show, five were choreogrphed by Elon fculty. One ws choreogrphed by dncers in the Summtion Dnce Compny, New York City-bsed modern dnce compny, nd the other by dnce legend, Ann Sokolow. Sokolow, lte modern dncer nd 20th century choreogrpher, creted Trois Morceux for concert in New York in But the piece ws never performed until now. Brennn Kolbo, junior nd dnce mjor, sid Elon will be mking history with this piece. Preprtion for the spring concert begn bck in the fll with uditions. And the cst hsn t stopped working since. All rehersls were over Winter Term, so I ws in rehersl from 9 or 8.m. until 5 or 6 p.m. every dy of J-term wheres other people were just in clss, Kolbo sid. In the production process, there re often rodblocks whether it s trying to memorize choreogrphy, fcing injuries or being snowed in. We lerned our entire, 15-minute Summtion s piece in only two or three dys due to the terrible snow storm over J-Term, sid freshmn Jenn Kulcz. This pushed me to be extremely mentlly invested during every rehersl. As result, the piece hs come together beutifully, nd is such unique work. And the week leding up the show, the dncers were in technicl rehersl every single night. Goldberg sys the preprtion doesn t end fter the curtin closes t the end of rehersl. Outside of rehersls, we prepre by continuing to trin in clss nd through cross-trining, Goldberg sid. Before ech dress rehersl nd show, I led compny wrm-up to ensure tht our bodies nd minds re prepped for the stge. Despite ll of their hrd work, some dncers feel the rts re unpprecited. Sometimes when you sy things like, Oh, I m dnce mjor, people don t relly know wht tht mens, Bischel sid. Kolbo cknowledges dnce is complex rt but is reltble to nyone, nevertheless. When you first think of modern dnce, it s in tht weird lnd where you don t relly know wht s hppening onstge nd tht s OK, Kolbo sid. But some of them re very entertining nd within ech piece there re moments tht relly ctch the udience. This show ws performed with help from other deprtments on cmpus. The lst piece required more men thn re in the dnce progrm. Members of the cst recruited students from other mjors, s EACH OF THESE PIECES IMPACTS THE AUDIENCE IN A DIFFERENT WAY SO THAT THEY WILL LEAVE THE THEATER NOT JUST FEELING ENTERTAINED, BUT ALSO CHANGED. When it comes down to it, dnce is tem sport, nd the bond creted on stge is like no other. While Corrign is finishing her lst show, some re just beginning their creers on the Elon stge, such s Kulcz. It is relly importnt to me to give ech nd every performnce my ll, s this is one of the first impressions I will be mking t this school, Kulcz sid. Kolbo finds herself in unique sitution she is nostlgic bout her older friends leving, but excited for wht the future of the progrm brings. Replcing hlf the squd with freshmen, there ws no telling if this would be mke or brek yer. But fter climing its second-stright Colonil Athletic Assocition (CAA) title Mrch 10 in Phildelphi, hed coch Chrlotte Smith nd her tem re dncing once gin, receiving n utomtic bid into the tournment. Adjusting to new fces Rnked sixth youngest in the country, Elon s roster is composed of 75 percent underclssmen. With no juniors nd three seniors, the vetern coch hs hd her fir set of chllenges trining the new plyers. It s not tht they didn t work hrd or tht they didn t wnt it, it s just tht there were lot of things tht they didn t understnd, Smith sid. When you hve 50 percent of your s qud tht doesn t know wht they re doing, it mkes for some interesting prctices. The freshmn clss this yer included gurd Ariel Colon, forwrd Emily Mupin, gurd Sdi Munford, gurd Arin Nnce, forwrd An Popovic nd forwrd Jylin Powell. With new tem to tech, Smith sys the freshmn clss put in the extr effort to get up to chmpionship cliber. They were hungry, she sid. They cme in to wtch film, they cme in to get extr shots they did whtever they could to become gret prctice plyers to push these seniors to be better. Then, long the wy, they figured it out. They figured out the system nd did relly gret job down the stretch. Munford helped the tem the most, contributing n verge of 6.6 points per gme nd plying the third-most minutes of ny Phoenix plyer. She proved pivotl in the CAA Chmpionship gme, finishing the dy with 13 points. I m just incredibly proud of our freshmen in helping us, pushing us, to where we re now, Smith sid.
