Tom Wtson, retired Chrleston fire chief, sid he nd his fmily rrely miss the prde, which they hve been ttendg for nerly 43 yers. I like the bnds, Wtson sid. You get to see people town nd it brgs everyone out to support ech other. Jckson, is currently chrge of the Pnther Pw sce it cme under new ownership. Jckson sid tht t lest for now, he plns on keepg the nme of the br the sme. Other chnges hve lredy come for the Pnther Pw, however, with one beg some new spekers. Michel Roggenkmp, n employee t the Pnther Pw, sid the spekers re mjor upgrde from the previous ones they hd before. He sid he thks tht there will likely be other upgrdes to the br. Review committee plns next meetgs By Brooke Schwrtz Admistrtion On Fridy, the review committee tht is contug to look t vitliztion Workgroups no. 8 nd 9 met for the first time to set up pln of ction for future meetgs. Durg the vitliztion project, Workgroup no. 8 looked t developg new progrms to crese enrollment. Workgroup no. 9 looked t chngg the orgniztion of the university s cdemic colleges, schools nd deprtments nd different lerng pltforms nd tuition models tht could be used. This review committee hs been discussed for the mjority of this semester, but ws just stffed t Fculty Sente meetg Oct.17, with ten fculty members hvg been elected to serve on the committee. At the committee meetg, biologicl sciences professor Billy Hung ws elected s the chir nd put chrge of orgnizg nd keepg trck of future meetgs nd gends. The meetgs will contue to be open, with discussion still beg hd bout whether or not the committee will vite spekers to present. This week, members of Student Sente nd Stff Sente will be vited to sit on the meetgs to provide put to the committee. Neither the Student nor Stff Sente will be ble to vote or mke ny other decisions. The committee hs to shre their recommendtions nd feedbck to the provost no lter thn Jn.15. These recommendtions will be up for further discussion t the President s Council. The committee will hve pproximtely 10 weeks to review the work of Workgroups no. 8 nd 9. Provost Jy Gtrell, vice president for cdemic ffirs, sid the importnce of this committee is tht it focuses on Estern s future. At the mcro level, I relly would like your best red nd sense of wht mkes sense to the cmpus culture, to its historicl trjectory, nd where we s n stitution wnt to be the next three to five yers, Gtrell sid. Hung sid he thought tht settg gol of progress durg the next three to five yers would be good wy to implement different ctions, s he wnts to see wht is discussed hppen with couple of yers. However, committee member Stephn Lucs, the terim ssocite den of the College of Eduction nd Professionl Studies, sid he hs problem with such short outlook the gol of the committee. For mny people, fmily goes beyond blood. Fmily cn be friends, pets nd so on. Besides my biologicl sister, I hve severl friends I consider fmily. To me, cllg someone your brother or sister mens much deeper reltionship thn n ordry friendship. A brother or sister is someone who understnds you much more thn just the surfce. Brothers nd sisters, t lest to me, re there for you through thick nd th. Blood is wht mkes you relted, but loylty is wht mkes you fmily. So over the yers the words brother, sister, nd fmily hve evolved to hve much deeper meng my life. From high school, I hve two friends who re my brothers. We grew up together nd mke the effort to keep contct even when we cn not see ech other. However, I hve been guilty of fllg out of contct with them. This is why fmily is wht you mke of it. You could hve friend tht becomes much more thn tht, but without mkg some sort of effort, thgs cn just fll prt. Tht is life. The memories re still there, the pictures re still sved on your phone, but unfortuntely more memories will not be mde without mkg tht effort. An exmple of this ws my time the rmy reserves. For three yers, I mde friends nd one who ws truly like brother to me. We will shre the occsionl text nd funny meme but it is not the sme. When I left my unit, I ws very sd nd felt like I ws levg behd fmily. Tht ws hrd. College is nother exmple of losg friends throughout life. The begng of this semester ROTC, my militry clss of eight nd I hve become closer thn ever. When you re forced to ledership positions nd work nd see ech other everydy, it s hrd not to become close. The sd relity of this closeness though is tht fter we commission to the rmy, we will ll go to seprte jobs spred cross the country. One of friends, especilly, is someone I hope to rem contct with. He is good, honest guy. Do not get me wrong; I don t drop people out of my life like trsh. The friends I hve mde will forever be my hert. They hve become my fmily nd lwys will be. But you lso hve to remember tht life goes beyond college. The people you prty with t Homecomg nd the friends you see clss everydy, you my never see g. People come nd go, but true friends tht hve become fmily will stnd the test of time even if you do not see them on regulr bsis. I too posted #MeToo, but ws lmost uncomfortble becuse I still feel slightly shmed to be one of the sttistics. I did not wnt people to know nd view me differently becuse of wht hppened to me. I posted #MeToo nywy becuse I thk it is importnt to spek out so we cn brg wreness, nd try to stop the epidemic of dividuls who thk their uncceptble ctions re fct cceptble. This trendg hshtg not only brought bck memories of my own story, but my friends stories of their ssults or rpe nd led me to discover mny other women who hve fced similr thgs. I went to youth group with the friend who sexully ssulted me. I would see him down on his knees with ters down his fce climg to love God nd hve devoted his life to God every Tuesdy night. I never expected it would hppen to me s freshmn high school- especilly not by him. I remember very vividly beg scremed t when he sid, Wht do you wnt from me? You won t sleep with me nd you won t dte me, so wht good re you? I discovered fter wht hppened tht the guy hd been sippg ll night on 33 percent more bonussize bottle of cough syrup mixed with sod he bought from Monicl s Pizz. He blmed his ctions on him busg cough syrup tht night. He sid we needed to tlk, so we wlked to Mrk Tw s rk becuse it ws still ner the footbll gme we were ttendg. Every time I see the prk where I ws ssulted sted of tlkg, I still crge. When I ws ble to get his hnds off me, I rn s fst s I could cross the soccer field ner me to get bck to my friend Allison, who I hd origlly went to the gme with. I sw my friend Lee tkg shortcut through the soccer field to the footbll gme s I ws runng, so I met him hlfwy nd styed by his side knowg he would be protection if needed. I tried tellg my friends wht hppened nd ws clled lir. All of his friends sid he would never do tht, nd even if he did do it they would choose not to believe it. Becuse my peers who I confided chose to peg me s lir bout my ssult, I chose not to turn him to the police. I know mny, mny other women nd severl of my friends who hve lso not turned people for sexully ssultg or rpg them becuse they do not hve fith tht their story will be believed. Nothg is more dimishg to the livelihood of someone s spirit to hve been sexully ssulted nd to be clled lir when they tell their story. Luckily, my friends Allison nd Crley believed nd supported me my recovery nd helg. Mny of my friends ditched me fter wht hppened becuse of the rumors tht followed. Now tht yers hve pssed I m heled nd hve forgiven him for wht he did to me. Sce I hve forgiven him, I know I hve power of how I rect to thgs tht hppen to me, nd I m lso ble to tell my story to strengthen other victims. I mde it my gol fter I begn helg from my ssult to be the most powerful form of myself tht I could. I took wht hppened nd hve used it s fuel when trg CrossFit, when mkg good grdes my clsses nd my dy-to-dy life. Whtever terests student hs, there is somethg the student could get volved with on cmpus tht could corporte those terests. Gettg volved does not lwys men huge time commitment. Although there is lmost nothg better thn puttg time to somethg you re pssion bout to mke difference, it is lso rewrdg to prticipte smll wys from time to time. People should be ble to get volved some spect of this community no mtter where they work, wht their religion is, wht their ethnicity is or where they re from. This community should mke everyone on cmpus feel like n importnt prt of it, becuse ech person brgs strengths tht cn mke the community greter by shrg them. We re ll here to lern nd grow nd becomg more volved the community cn often ccomplish both of those gols. Plus, it is opportunity for lifelong friendships to be forged out of shred experiences. If we showed even hlf of the school spirit we did round Homecomg time, memories just s specil s the ones of Homecomg festivities could be forged every dy.
